Ian Moss the singer/guitarist is from outback Australia, a town named Alice Springs. Just about in the heart of Australia. He told the audience at a recent solo gog that this song is about going home to Alice Springs which has a river called Todd River which doe not flow often as its in the middle of the desert. He said he told his parents when he returned home after some touring about the song but was not happy using Todd River so looked on a map of Australia and found a place named Bow River. Jim Barnes the other vocalist was born in Glasgow Scotland and immigrated to Australia at age 5 and was brought up in industrial town named Elizabeth (my former home town and I guess similar to NJ). He has written extensively about the hardship of his upbringing and his life in general in a few books. Cold Chisel are my favourite Aussie band even surpassing AC/DC despite having limited commercial success outside of Australia. Cold Chisel are the soundtrack of my life. I enjoyed your review mate.

Chisel actually did have a go at breaking into the US market in 1981, but they were comprehensively d*cked around by their American record company. So they came home and wrote 'You got nothing I want' and continued blasting the roof off of every venue they played in Australia for the next couple of years. And Barnesy was nominally their lead singer. It just so happens that Ian Moss also has a great voice and was joint vocalist on some of their better stuff. Also, Don Walker on keys was the lyricist for a lot of their stuff. If Barnesy was the balls of the operation, Don Walker was the heart.

Yes - the American accent seems to be natural when singing. There are some singers who strongly represent the Australian accent in their singing, but it's more common not to have much of an accent when singing, or use some American accent stylings - probably just because that's the sound we're all familiar with. It's a similar thing for bands from the UK, most of the time you either can't hear their accent, or they sound slightly American. Of course there are many others who do sing with a strong accent.

It's not that people sound American when they sing! It's that accents generally disappear when singing. Even for Americans, but you might assume it sounds American because it's familiar to you. For example, I can't usually tell where singers are from just by listening and they certainly don't sound American to me. I'd say most sound kind of Australian to me. However, some artists do choose to include their accent in their music for stylistic reasons, though this isn't the norm.

The American 'Blues' has had a massive influence on musicians worldwide, including 'The Beatles' and 'The Rolling Stones'. And of course, Australian musicians. The music from 'The Deep South', in my opinion, forms the base of many modern 'Rock 'N' Roll' successes. When young kids who aspired to be great musicians in the 1960's first leant their trade, it from Afro-American geniuses. Their appetite for such music was insatiable.

We have slightly different accents in Australia we don't all sound the same. We have the Paul Hogan (Crocodile Dundee) accent which is a very strong sounding accent but we also have softer sounding accents aswell that differ from State to State. Ian Moss the lead singer in this song was singing in an Australian accent Jimmy Barnes has a unique sound as he was born in Scotland and came to Australia when he was 10year's old I think, so he has an Australian and Scottish accent. Keith urban sings with an American accent because he sings Country and Western and caters to American's we don't have a big country and Western scene in Australia.

Always good to see reactions to one of our most beloved bands. Way back in the early days of rock, a lot of Australians had an inferiority complex, so they didn't believe in their fellow Aussies. As a result, a lot of people sang with American accents, to fool the audience and hopefully get noticed elsewhere, specially America. In the film world, Americans couldn't understand the Australian accent and to get a job, they had to speak with an American accent. Later, in the music world, it just became a habit. But don't ask me what the English's excuse is 🤣. Anyway, Ian Moss the guitarist, is the singer and writer of this song. Jimmy Barnes is the main lead singer, in this case doing back ups. I think that's David Blight on harmonica and has always played at their concerts, but not a member. Don Walker, most prolific song writer of the band and keyboards, Phil Small on bass and Steven Prestwich is the drummer, who is sadly missed RIP. They've all written songs, but Jimmy, Ian and Don have pursued solo careers, but the band still gets together and make new albums and tour, the last of which started near the end of 2019 and finished early 2020.

You are correct, most Australian singers sing in an American accent. There are only a few bands that sing in an Australian accent. Check out 'Never had so much fun' by Frenzal Rohmb. Also 'Black fella white fella' by The Wurrumpi band. Also Midnight Oil kind of sound Australian.

The Cold Chisel song ' You've got nothin i want', was written as a 'f... You' to the American record industry because they wouldnt give them a chance. We were so lucky to have so many great Pub rock bands, who had to be good 'live', or the audience wouldn't stand for a crap band😅😅😅😅❤️🌏🪐🌕🙏😎🇦🇺🌟🌸👣🦋🏡🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

Your right about some Australian singers having American accents. Try listening to "Rose Tattoo," "The Screaming Jets" and "Midnight Oil." Like Cold Chisel they have purely Australian accents.

Cold Chisel, great band. But theres a version of Bow River done by Troy Cassar-Daley. For me is a much better version. if you can find it, I suggest listening to it. The funny thing is, I got my hands on a Cold Chisel album from a mate about 10+ years ago and Troy Cassar-Daley version of Bow river was on it. Have no idea where it came from, but its one of my most listened to songs. Can't help but sing a long with him.

Singing is its own form of accent. No matter where you are from and what style you sing we all sound the same. The only thing that changes is the style of music. If you can hear an accent when someone ‘sings’ it is because they will be talking in tune. Not truly singing And you trying to figure out the style of music? That’s Aussie rock right there. Ian Moss is a world class guitarist and vocalist in his own right.

More on accents - if you would like to hear an artist singing in an Australian accent, try "I was only nineteen", a song by Redgum about an Australian soldier's experience in the Vietnam war and the cost to him and his mates. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5jQmKqubJyiqdk

The band has 2 singers 1st one singing playing guitar Ian moss 2nd Jimmy barnes normally the main singer It why our best singer don't travel overseas as won't give up their power for the commercial money They want to do it their way and won't sell their sole for few bucks The boys in good old usa music don't like that they want control our guy give them the finger and stay home and make a good living

I figured that out after the reaction. I had to go to the wiki page.

A bit late...The Cold Chisel song YOU GOT NOTHIN' I WANT is all about the group's bad experience with the US manipulative music industry, that a lot of our performers came up against, trying to diminish their original style and manipulate them. With so many fans already back in Oz they were not desperate like the new talented US locals trying to break into their own home music market. A lot of big USA and UK bands and performers visited and praised the music scene here but word never got out except for tourists. Germany and Brazil in particular.

When people sing their accent is not as pronounced. Same with British bands. Jimmy Barnes has a scotch accent when he talks.
