It is a song about someone stuck in the city of Adelaide in South Australia working in the auto industry "I don't want to see another engine line" and wanting to escape to the hot, wet and relatively empty north end of Australia ("the great top end") where Bow River is. Ian Moss was from the Northern Territory. Peace out.

for the Americans, Bow River is on the WA coast about 2700KM or 28 hr drive from Adelaide beautiful fishing and a simple place. Aussies loved to go to these places and recenter themselves. for some they worked killing jobs just so they can get back there on their holidays.

If you want to know why chisel never went to America, listen to 'Nothing I Want' which Jimmy Barnes wrote for the American Promoters they signed with who wanted them to modify their whole act to 'fit in' with early 80s American rock. Ain't no way jimmy was wearing spandex and cannons and re-recording the songs. They just wanted to get up and belt out the songs and get rotten drunk. They decided pretty early that they wouldn't bother with the US and made a good enough living in Australia and Europe. Kind of the same with Farnham although his was as much a family decision. It's a shame because they would have been pretty big I think.

Mossy is a bit like Stevie Ray Vaughn....play guitar too well and no one notices your singing. The other singer in this band is Don Walker. A literal rocket scientist (yes, I'm not exaggerating, he's a rocket scientist) you'll see him playing the grand piano in this clip. He also wrote about 90% of Chisel's music including this banger. Went on a road trip today and my partner put this on in the car and I found the damage done to my voice by podcasts and pandemic. Use to be able to match Jimmy note for note. Time to start singing again.

Same here - we are very lucky in Australia that we get to see these guys (and others) live. I once saw them play live under the pseudonym 'Barking Spiders' at the Armadale Hotel in Melbourne in the very early 1980s. The only other band I ever saw at the The Armadale was a band called Swannee - coincidentally led by John Swan - Barnesy's brother!

When Aussie bands make it big overseas (AC/DC, INXS, Midnight Oil) they rarely come back to Australia to play. We've been so lucky to have Cold Chisel here for almost 50 years for Aussies to enjoy our favourite band. I've seen them multiple times - and loved every one of their concerts. It's good to see the rest of the world is starting to hear their awesomeness in these reaction videos now.

@@CVTECK1 the reason they weren’t wanted by the American labels was that their sound didn’t fit the new wave and hair metal that was the up and coming sound in the US in the early 80s. Chisel was considered to be too different and probably a little outdated for American audiences. Funny thing is they have a lot in common with Springsteen and he obviously did very well for himself.

Teck - Aussies are very quick to call bullshit - especially on those who aren't genuine. Your heart felt reactions to some of the musical icons we love is well appreciated and we are grateful you're out there sharing the gospel. The reason you may be loving a lot of what your hearing is that the original influence of all these greats was American R & B. They loved it, live it and made it their owna. And now it is being appreciated by the country it came from. Enjoy so much more coming your way. the rabbit hole is very very deep........

Aussies are always incredibly hard workers, pushing ourselves to stupid levels that when it comes time for weekends and holidays that we religiously revere them. Everyone has their own preference of where they want to unwind. Be it mountains, rainforest, desert, coast, rivers, ocean. Moss obviously likes Bow River (there are actually two Bow Rivers and i think he is refering to the far northern one) where he can lean back and relax with a fishing rod on the banks in the shade and do sweet FA and relax. An old Little River Band (LRB) song called Cool Change is similar in story, and is an amazing listen. Its about working to the point of physical and mental Burn Out and just needing to escape to the place everyone feels is their peaceful place.

The origins of Pub Rock is typically rock played by local Australian bands in past decades in small venues where they needed to be damn good and versatile with great showmanship and audience engagement - if they weren't great they got no further gigs - pretty cut-throat stuff booking-wise. And mostly no distance between the bands and the crowds - that kept thing honest, and real. The really great ones took this same realism and accessibility with them regardless of how big their venue's or audiences became. The ability of many great Australian pub rock artists to create hits with brilliant musical structure and lyrics that their audiences could immediately and deeply relate to was a big part of what made them so timeless.

It was the content of their lyrics that set them against the US music executives ie pregnancy termination, Vietnam war and the damage done to innocent Australians at the hands of the industrial military machine. Then ask who controls the music industry, drug trade, birth control and the industrial military machine. The answer to those questions is also the reason why you’ve never heard of them.

Don't know if you've ever played the harmonica, but you play it both on the breath in and out. That's why they can have it go for so long. There are special harmonicas you can buy that will only work on the out breath, usually they're for 'tuning' instruments or sounding a note for singers.

One guy said how can I be doing review on music but can't tell if it's a harmonica or guitar lol. I'm not even doing review it's a reaction lol. But that's how good the harmonica player was that you had to listen closely to know that he was playing. Amazing

Yes that's a harmonica. But they've got it processed as if it was a nasty ass guitar. You've got that nice distortion overdrive and feedback straight from the swamp.

You don't see Cold Chisel Tshirts because as a full time working, touring, recording band at it's height that all ended in 1983, 40 years ago. Some members pursued solo careers and there had been that one off reunion show or coming together of odd members here and there. I noticed you refer to Cold Chisel at lot as a 3 piece, 3 guys, Cold Chisel were and are a 5 piece band, Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Don Walker. Phil Small and the late Steve Prestwich (Died 2011). Les Kaczmarek was their Bass player from 1973-75 and pass away in 2008 The line up from 1975 was the line up that remained together until the band called it a day in 1983. The years the band was active are as follows : 1973-1983, 1997-1999, (2003) 2009-present. This video you are reviewing is over 20 years old and Mossy's voice as awesome as it once was is not what it used to be, if you listen to Live shows from back in their hey day or the studio album version you'll hear Mossy at his greatest.
