The song is about Life After Death. Each Stanza, the character goes one level higher into the atmosphere on his way to heaven. How can you see the stars if it's raining? Guiding his way where? Been mistaken for dead? The last verse is the character leaving your view, becoming one with the stars and rejoicing for an entire stanza. It's upbeat because he's rejoicing. He died as an old man, and hasn't felt so alive in years. Martin loves writing songs about death.

This is one of my guilty DM pleasures! Its probably Depeche Mode's most upbeat and catchy tune and one of my favourite vocal performances from Dave Gahan ...Magic!🌠

The movie that’s playing is 1986 film “Modern Girls”.

You should check out Martin doing this live as a Piano version during the Delta Machine tour, it was on the Live in Berlin soundtrack (he also did it during the Memento Mori tour but only in a few concerts) and even the Forced To Mode (the best DM tribute band) live version which is amazing as well.

La versión del álbum Black Celebration en USA sustituyó esta canción por Stripped, porque la discográfica en Estados Unidos pensaba que Stripped era una canción demasiado atrevida y por lo tanto allí fue cara B

In Europe, side A of the single was Stripped and side B But not tonight, in the US it was the other way around, in Europe we know it, I like it, I suppose others do too, but they didn't give it the same importance. I think you might also like "Nothing" from the Music for the Masses album but I don't think it came out as a single.

I loved the album this was on (tohugh it was 10 years old when I disc'd it). The first time I went to a gay party this song was the closer and I had never felt so alive. I had shed the last of my shame that night.

I Love Depeche Mode! But my comment today is a request, one which will get a super super thanks and I hope you will enjoy: It is nothing less that Tina Turner live in 1997, song Whatever you Want, which you happened to like the music video, but this time live in Amsterdam, opening act. Please, don't stop it too soon; let her say hello to the huge crowd and then the song goes on.

Written in one day by Martin Gore sung by Dave and a fan favorite but the band doesn't particularly care for it. The US record label wanted a single and something more commercial friendly.

One of the Depeche songs many love, but I totally hate. I love them being daaaaarrrkk, especially around those times they were, and this is just too soft for me. It wasn't part of the official BLACK CELEBRATION release in UK and Europe, it was added to the CD versions only (and later digital). Maybe US vinyls also had it, but they always went their own way... which leads me to: As you stated correctly it wasn't released as a single worldwide, just in USA and maybe some other countries. In Europe it was a B-side of STRIPPED only (a muuuuch better song IMHO), but Siren, the record company handling US releases, singlehandedly swapped A and B sides, against Depeches will (especially Alan Wilder, the sound genious hated that decision). it is however not a forgotten gem, as it is played relatively often in recent tours in an acoustic rendition with Martin Gore on the vocals :)...

Can you do a video about Les cowboys fringants with the song La fin du show, it's a special request since this song is a testament from Karl Tremblay, singing about his whole career, knowing is going to die ( dead last November) so he say it's the End of the show period. This song is like the last song of David Bowie, or the song Hurt with Johnny Cash
