Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at a PATREON requested Dusty Springfield with Dusty singing LIVE: "Stay Awhile" / "I Only Want to Be With You." Performing on the ED Sullivan show, Dusty impresses me with her catchy songs and enthusiasm as she performs.

Dusty was a presence in the charts here in the UK for most of the 60's with some great songs. She was a great vocalist much beloved of Burt Bacharach and later The Pet Shop Boys. She has so many great tracks some of my favourites - I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself - All I Need Is You - The Look Of Love - I Close My Eyes And Count To Ten - but really she always gives a great performance.

Wow! Dereck, Dusty Springfield was huge in the mid-60s! Those were my pre-teen years but I was so into music, with the radio on all the time. And I clearly remember Dusty and her hits from that period. You need to listen to "Wishin' and Hopin'", if you want to hear another very catchy and popular tune. And interestingly enough, Dusty had a bit of a comeback in the 80s. Sadly she passed away all too soon. But that voice will certainly live on. Thanks for this great flashback!

I fell in love with Dusty in the summer of '64 when the radio seemed to always be playing "Wishin' and Hopin'".

She is one of my favorite singer. Oh man her voice is velvet, and she had so many hits! She the female voice in What Have I Done to Deserve This?" by Pet Shop Boys. She was idolized in the UK and her funeral was broadcast on live TV. She mad a great dance/electronic sort of album in 1979 but she has more hits than the Mafia. I Only Want to Be With You" is a huge song all over the world. I don't know anyone (at least who grew up in the 60's and 70's) who doesn't know this song.,

Definitely one of the greatest female singers ever! Glad she in and should be the Hall of Fame. You don't have to say you Love Me, Son of a Preacher Man and Brand New Me were terrific. Her real name is Mary Kathryn O'Brien. Sadly she passed several years ago. She did duets with Tom Jones and many more. Awesome. Best success on yr channel

You should listen to all her songs. Unfortunately most people only mention 'Son of a Preacher Man' but she has loads of great songs. Try 'Goin Back' which is a much softer song but is beautiful.

Dusty had her own tv show back in the 60s. Saturday night prime time. She could sing anything, any genre. There's a lovely folk/trad song she does from this era called "The water is wide". Incidentally, "I Only want To Be With You" was covered later on by a group called The Tourists, which was Annie Lennox's first group before Eurythmics and her great solo career.

Excellent review. Dusty was an icon. Son of a Preacher Man, You Don't Have To Say You love Me, are among her greats. She was friends with the Beatles. In fact she interviewed them on Ready, Steady Go. She had no peers. I Only Want To Be with You is a toe tapper. She deserves an approval. Really. By the way, I Only Want To Be With You was the main song but since there was 2 for 1 I thought it would be a treat. It was #12 in USA I think.

Dusty was ICONIC. You need to listen to "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" and "Wishin & Hopin". You'll likely also recognize her from the Austin Powers soundtrack: "The Look of Love." So, so good.

Dusty was the female Elvis! You don’t have to say you love me’ was her big, BIG anthem… a remake of an Italian hit. She also did amazing versions of ‘I don’t know what to do with myself’ and ‘I think it’s going to rain today’. Dusty had an amazingly long career spanning nearly 35 years, before she died from cancer. Check out her big electronic single with The Pet Shop Boys: ‘What Have I Done to Deserve This?’ from 1987.

“Ain’t no sun since you’ve been gone”, “Sun of a preacher man” The climax of this song is pure ecstasy. She was a pioneer in music and was one of the people who introduced Motown to the uk. She also struggled with her sexuality :( she lived her life closeted as gay/bi. Anyway, any duet with Tom jones and dusty Springfield is pure gold. This woman is a very important person in history because she was a pioneer in music AND in human rights. She was escorted from South Africa for refusing to sing in front of segregated audiences. 💕 I highly recommend you read about her story cause it truly is like a history lesson. Annnd she’s one of the best female vocalists in music... so yeah love dusty :)

Dusty was a perfectionist. Her “Son of A Preacher Man” cut and her “Dusty in Memphis” album is legendary. I Only Want to Be With You was a huge transatlantic hit. Listen to the studio versions in stereo and you will see that the quality is just as good as anything recorded today. Dusty started out as a folk singer with her brothers in The Springfields. For Pride week, you can review her singing with The Pet Shop Boys-“what Have I Done T Deserve This-1987. By the way, she lived quietly with her female lover.

Thank you dereck for playing dusty. I forgot that I heard her or even knew anything by her. I would have been small child when I heard her. We were a very strict family with no tv or radio. I bout a transistor radio with earplugs that I hid from the family unless they take it away. When the 2nd song came on it brought tears to my eyes.thanx again I love her.

Couple of quick notes: _No_ audio from mid-1960s TV is good. It was just a limitation of the technology. The trumpet you're hearing was being played by the father of a former co-worker of mine. His father was a trumpeter, and his mother was a well-known jazz guitarist.

Dusty laid the path for singers like Adele. She had a lot of top tens back then, and was a favorite of Elton John who inducted her into Rock and Roll hall of fame. She talked a record executive into signing Led Zeppelin to their label. She recorded with Pet Shop Boys- What Have I Done to Deserve This. That song is definitely worth a listen, has a GREAT video.

Dusty's not waving to the crowd - she was extremely short sighted, I mean really short sighted. The waving arms was her "thing". I remember reading that often she'd write the song list for the show on her arm and waving her arms around allowed her to read what was coming up next - to be honest I'm not sure how true that is, but there you go.
