I wish more people would listen to early Jackson Browne music. It is poetry, and IMO, some of the best music ever produced...ever.

So interesting... I've never heard this song as bitter or mean. I've always heard it as resignation, sadness, acceptance of something that happens in so many relationships... where no one is as fault... you've just grown apart, and it's time to end it. I first heard this song when I was 13, but I never really *got* it until my 30's, when I went through that kind of breakup. His ability to capture the nuance of that kind of feeling is remarkable. He's a fantastic lyricist. Very much recommend checking out his catalog...especially from the 70s. Crossing my fingers to see your reaction to more of his music🤞.

I agree. I take this as an internal dialog. His thoughts as he contemplates his life and their relationship. Sharing with the world through his art. BTW a lot of us love sad songs. They give us comfort and remind us that we are not alone in our occasional sadness. After all it is part of life. And sadness inspires such great poetry, as this song proves.

Jackson Browne (the color not the cookie ;) is my favorite singer-songwriter alongside John Prine. His songs are deep and so well written. He writes of social issues and injustice, love and joy, life and pain. For Andrei I suggest 'Walking Slow' from the same album. ☮🤎🎶

What can be considered as a positive about this song, and others like it, is that while you are alone, or feeling alone, you hear this song and you know you're not the only person who's going through a hard time. You know there's someone else in this big world who knows exactly how you feel. And then you don't feel so alone anymore.

I was obsessed with this man and this album and especially this song in the mid - 70’s when life held such promise. In later years, I had it to hold onto when love slowly dissolved before it finally disappeared and I realized that this music and lyric brought me peace while allowing me the sadness I was working through. For this reason, it remains very special for me. Hopefully the sorrow you felt at the first listen is fleeting but it will help you to understand what others sometimes are going through.

Jackson is one of my most favorite singer song writers. I've been a fan of him for 40 years. As far as I know is his name is pronounced Jackson Brown (the "e" is silent)! In English the sound brownie has the "ie" at the end.

@@laurakali6522 You've got that right, Laura. There is a thread of sorrow running through most, if not all, of Jackson's songs. How about, "...and in the end, they traded their tired wings/ for the resignation that living brings (what a great line!)/ and exchanged love's bright and fragile glow for the glitter and the rouge/ And in a moment, they were swept before the deluge."

My old college roommate would ask me now and again after noticing my mood "Have you been listening to Jackson Browne again?" It's not so much that his songs are sad, but a lot of his songs just connect on a deep level. Here's some of my favorites: Sing My Songs to Me and For Everyman (should be listened together), For a Dancer, Before the Deluge, and Ready or Not.

Didn't know Jackson wrote songs for Nitty-gritty Dirt Band, they were my first concert in College sitting on the gymnasium floor and listening to Mr. Bojangles so close to them, concerts back then weren't so commercialized. I had 2 Jackson Brown albums really liked him👍 Peace✌️ and Love❤️ Gary😊

Jackson Browne was and is the great bard of the generation that came of age during the 1960s and 70s, so it always helps in deciphering the meaning of his lyrics to understand the history of those times and what that generation of young people experienced. And, for those of us who were there and traveled roughly the same road that Jackson did, he was/is our great lyrical historian, both in personal ways and collectively. Also, he has kept the faith politically as an artist over the years, remaining humble and dedicated to the values of the peace and environmental movements that he and the rest of us came of age with. I'd like to highly, highly, highly recommended three specific songs of his that demonstrate what I'm talking about: Before the Deluge, For A Dancer, and Lives in the Balance. His catalog is vast and filled with impressive and meaningful work, but those three have long been among my very favorite Jackson Browne masterpieces.. . . And, I might add that I am not generally inclined toward celebrity worship or gushy nonsense, but Jackson is the real deal!

Great song! Jackson Browne started his career writing songs for other artists such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (he was briefly a member in 1966) & the Eagles (Browne co-wrote "Take It Easy"). But in the 70's he started recording his own songs. He had a lot of hits 70's-80's such as "The Load Out / Stay", "Doctor, My Eyes", "Rock Me On The Water", "Here Come Those Tears Again", "The Pretender", "Somebody's Baby", "Tender Is The Night" etc.

The whole album is simply brilliant; like Cat Stevens, as a teenager I had to really learn the lyrics, life lessons to think about: Fountain Of Sorrow, For Dancer (how I love this song), Before The Deluge (what a violin), The Last Show... .The previous album For Everyman with the title track is already brilliant. His great voice is also so impressive live, saw two concerts here in Central Europe. Thank you for this choice!!!

"Bitter"?! How about, "heartbroken"? And...he is not saying these things to the other; he's turning them into Art . Later. Having lived this song, line by painful line, about 35 years ago, and still being able to be moved to tears by it, I get to call it Art. So eloquently expressed, and so true to life - at least, when life is like this. I think it's magnificent, and aesthetically beautiful. And, BTW, I'm one who BELIEVES in "going back there', as needed. That's how the healing happens. Most of what you said, I agree with; just not the judgments. This is all about...PAIN.

The 'e' is silent. Jackson is top 10, imo, in the singer/songwriter category. btw, Jackson and Joni Mitchell were once a couple. At least one song from this album is thought to be written about Joni. That would be Fountain of Sorrow, another great song by Jackson. The Late for the Sky song is featured in the movie, Taxi Driver, staring Robert DeNiro and Jody Foster.

I am a very lucky man because I found the love of my life back in 1975. We had the joy of spending 43 years together until she passed in 2018. We agreed that whoever passed first the other should move on. I tried to do that, but I could not let her go, and still love her today as much and maybe even more today. It was love at first sight for me. She is literally the love of my life. I just wait until I can be with her again. She may not be with me physically, but she is certainly with me in spirit!! She became confined to a wheelchair in 2000 and I was her care giver for 18 years and it was very tough for both of us, but I would do it again without hesitation. I still love that lovely lady with all my heart and soul!! My only true love. I was in the navy when we married and 3 days after our marriage my ship departed for 18 months. I sent her a letter every day while I was away. I think that absence made our love stronger. Enjoy your reactions so much!!

He wasn't necessarily talking to the other person and trying to hurt them as much as he was coming to terms with his own feelings and seeing how even the both of them have seen this coming and as he'd like to make it all better, it seems these feelings have hit them both and where and how do we leave it from here.
