hey ! a French girl here !! this song (and especially the musical "Notre Dame de Paris") works so well, that in France absolutely EVERYONE knows it ( and the single "belle") even if the show dates from the 90s :) To make a comparison, it's as cult for us as West Side Story or the fantom of opera can be for Americans !

Ok Tee, I am glad you are discovering this musical: I attended it three times. First time was the premiere (in 1998 if I remembered well) then a few months later and last time was with a reboot they made 5 or 6 years ago (I did bring my sons with me). This is an absolute incredible musical full of gems. it was such as success in France, that it triggered a decade of amazing musicals (Les 10 Commandements, Romeo & Juliette, Le Roi Soleil, Robin des bois, ...). Before its success, the musical genre was a bit forgotten in France. In fact the previous musical success in France was in the 70s with "Starmania". You know this other one: the song "SOS d'un terrien en détresse" that made Dimash famous is from this Starmania musical and you also listened to Lara singing a medley of songs from Starmania. BTW, Dimash also covered songs from Notre Dame de Paris. And Lara sung "God helps the outcast" a song from the Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame anime, based on the same novel. Tina Arena, that you recently discovered, did play Esmeralda in this musical, she was a member of the London tour casting in 2001. And Hiba Tawaji that I made you reacted to also played Esmeralda in the reboot in Paris 5 years ago. Luc Plamondon appears to be the lyricist for both musicals (Starmania and Notre-dame de Paris). Michel Berger was the composer for Starmania and Richard Cocciante was the composer for Notre Dame de Paris. Finally, as you are a writer, let's talk a bit of Victor Hugo: he was a french novelist / poet / playwright / politician from the 19th century. I cannot stress enough to explain how big and important he is in the french culture and in the french history. I don't see any equivalence in US and in UK. Even Shakespeare - though a better playwright for sure - was not as complete as he was. And he was also a big political figure, opponent to the Emperor Napoleon III and banned during 20 years from France for this reason. You know some of his novels for sure: For instance, "Notre Dame de Paris" (1831) which led to this musical or the Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame. Or this other novel: "Les Misérables" (1862), which inspired one of the most successful broadway musical of all times. His poetry is also stunning and most french pupils learned at least 2 to 3 pieces from Victor Hugo at school.
