Mike Shinoda has always said this is one of the most important Linkin Park songs because it was the song they lead off with on Hybrid Theory and they wanted to show people what they were about. Chester always loved it because he didn't get a chance to rap that much in LP's catalog. What a great song!

I introduced my dad, 63 retired military guy, who is strictly a classic rock fanatic ACDC bob Sieger Jimi Hendrix ect, to hybrid theory and he really enjoyed it. I also had him listen to meteora and he said that if that's the same band then they got alot better with their writing and that was a beautiful thing to hear, progress. I tried showing him minutes to midnight but he didn't care much for it.

@@robertpetre9378Yeah, that was the thing. You used to not like Gansta Rap and stuff and suddenly Rock music sounded suspiciously similar. And then Nu Metal became more of a mass phenomenon and thus more of a topic and more of a nuisance to the haters. People who were a bit more open-minded had a chance to get used to more Hip-Hop style sounds in Rock and how you could still do cool shit with Crossover bands of the late nineties: Rage Against the Machine, Bodycount, Clawfinger, etc. The Judgement Night OST was a great example of what was going on at the time.

I always called them types the rock fossilels due to them all being old as shit and not wanting to expand themselves. I listened to the 80s heavier metal and it was great. Linkin Park though broke the scene and shaped their own way and were stupidly successful. Unique and amazing sound and overall great group cohesion made their ride one that is still talked about. Good reference....ever heard Megadeath or Metallica talked about? Yeah me neither lol.

I can't speak about the general response to the "rap/rock era", but I can speak a bit about the response to Linkin Park specifically. There were a lot of people who didn't feel that Linkin Park were "heavy" enough to be considered metal, and there were a lot of false rumours or ideas about the band. People were claiming that the band was manufactured by the record label, and called them a "boy band". That is simply false. The band was made up of friends/acquaintances that organically formed a band. They did split with their initial singer, and a friend of the guitarist who was working in the industry was the one who, through someone else in the industry, established contact between the band and Chester Bennington, who became their new vocalist. But the band held auditions, and were the onces to pick Chester. After that, the record label tried to change the band in all sorts of ways, notably trying to get Chester to do a "coup" to demote or kick rapper and founder Mike Shinoda. But Chester told them to "go f*** themselves", the band cut near all contact with the label, and told them that they would make their music their way, and if the label didn't like it, they could kick them. But the tale of Linkin Park as a "manufactured rock boy band" persisted, and people mocked them a lot for that, and a lot of thag mockety seemed to come from fans of heavier metal genres. After their first two albums, Linkin Park were determined to not get stuck with one narrow sound for the rest of their career, and after a brief hiatus, they released a third album with a very mixed sound (ranging from heavy songs like Given Up to very soft songs). The band took a huge risk changing the massively succesful sound that had sky-rocketed them to success, and got labelled as "sellouts", because their sound was deemed more popular and softer. Again, this was often from fans of heavier genres, but also from bitter fans of their original sound. Linkin Parks style of writing also brought them critique. Linkin Park tended to write lyrics that could be broadly related to, rather than writing very specific songs. Sometimes Mike and Chester would write together about a common emotional experience they had experienced in very different contexts, smd together they found the general "core" of the experiences. This made their songs hugely relatable to a lot of people. Many teenagers found a connection with the band, and so the band became associated with "teenage angst", and the band was again mocked for not being "authentic" enough, for being "weak". This despite the fact that some of the stuff they drew inspiration from was very dark, personal experiences, like Chester's experiences with CSA. It was my impression as a fan, that Linkin Park just superficially didn't fit some expectations people had for a "heavy" band, and superfically just didn't seem "legit" to some people. I really don't mind if people don't like the band's music, but I wish people would judge them more fairly ❤

I totally agree, but unfortunately this happens with every band or artist that bends genres or innovates in some way. Blink 182 and Sum 41 were criticized because “pop punk isn’t punk” (these were people who saw punk only as an aesthetic and thus completely missed the point). The Beastie Boys and Eminem weren’t considered “real rap”. When Queen released Bohemian Rhapsody it was criticized for being “too long” and “pretentious”. DMC and Aerosmith both got a lot of hate for their mashup version of Walk This Way. I don’t know why people can’t just listen to what they like and ignore what they don’t but it is what it is.
@GrimrDirge
@GrimrDirge Ай бұрын
8:00 It's pretty clear that some people need clean separation of categories, and they did not like the incursion of rap into rock. Others like myself welcomed the innovation, but it can be overdone or poorly done. Maybe the sudden wave of Limp Biskit, 311, Linkin Park, etc. gave some people the impression that it was being pushed, or that it was going to take over, but it's kinda remained a flavor option, not that core of rock.
@SSJ_Derp

Way before the rap/rock era, DMC and Aerosmith got a ton of hate for their version of Walk This Way. DMC fans thought they were selling out and Aerosmith fans didn’t like the “intrusion” of rap into rock music (I put “intrusion” in quotes because I think it’s a stupid concept). And there was definitely a subset of those people on both sides that saw rap as “black music” and rock as “white music” and wanted to keep it that way. I grew up on 90s and 2000s music so it never felt out-of-place to me. I also remember the debate over whether “pop punk” was really punk or not. There’s always been purists in the music world and I imagine there always will be.

Korn was a pivotal moment when they put out their debut in 1994 but hip hop & rock/metal music weren't exactly strangers to each other as far back as the 80s with Aerosmith and Run DMC doing Walk This Way which is I think for most people where it really started at least in a mainstream context. Other bands were doing it before Korn tho, hell even in the 90s you had Ice T's rap metal side project Body Count put out their record in 1991 as well as Rage Against The Machine the following year if memory serves me correctly. There are others as well like Public Enemy collabing with Anthrax on a reworking of Bring The Noise also in 91 so there were others as well but that's just a few examples off the top of my head.

Nah you’re on point, some purists on either side of the divide between rock and hip hop didn’t appreciate the fusion…

You are 100% correct. I was into 80s and 90s metal like Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, etc., so I HATED Linkin Park at first, but I think some of that is owed to the first single "One Step Closer" being a bit generic and it just didn't click til later.

I can't say for every rocker, but for myself. I love rock, metal and reeeally good vocals, i mean when people Actually can Sing. But! I Loved Linkin Park from the first moment i've heard it back in the days. It doesn't matter what the genre is. A talent is a talent, real passion in art is well seen and feels good no matter the shape or form it has, a masterpiece is a masterpiece whatever style it is made in.

People didnt like Linkin Park after they transitioned from their sound in Hybrid Theory and Meteora. This was peak Linkin Park. But imo they were still REALLY good in Minutes to Midnight and A thousand suns.

there was definitely a backlash for limp bizkit, people figured out fred durst wasn't exactly a lyricist. Never heard those complaints about LP. Probably bc Mike and Chester are both incredible at what they do.

Yes once upon a time Linkin Park were as hated as Nickleback or Imagine Dragons are today. I chalk it up to people just hate the popular thing cause its popular. And most of these people couldn't give a genuine reason why they suck they just know they suck. Same people complain that rock music stagnates and doesn't try anything new. But they're the ones who shit on bands for trying something new.

The elitist metalheads didn’t like Nu Metal because they were close minded and sometimes racist, and this is coming from someone who listened to metal since I was born in 1985 because of my older sister and who loves Nu Metal, some elitist listen to only metal and didn’t like hip hop/rap so they hated Nu Metal
