8:37 - The lead singer/guitarist of Megadeth, Dave Mustaine, used to be the lead guitarist of Metallica when they first formed. Substance abuse by Dave led to him being fired and replaced by Kirk Hammett. Afterward, Dave formed his own band, Megadeth. As far as being friends, that's a whole other story that you'll have to look up on your own 😅

It wasn't the substance abuse that got him kicked out, as ALL of the Metallica members were raging alcoholics at the time. It's the fact that Dave became a really nasty drunk when he was inebriated, which was pretty much most of the time.

That’s bullshit they all did the same drugs and drank. But Dave became violent when he was drunk Then there was the incident where James Hetfield kicked Dave’s Pitbull puppy and Dave confronted him and In the argument Dave wound up punching James in the face sending him flying backwards and landing on his back. One of those You Got Knocked The Fuck Out moments. At that point Lars and James decided to start looking for a new guitarist in secret. Then they waited until a long road trip back East to finally tell him he was kicked out the band. Like a dirty friend who never liked you they dropped him off Penny less at the bus station and left. There is more to it but it’s slanderous to state it was due to substance abuse. Dave’s drug problems began in Megadeth when the musicians he hired all were into harder drugs like Gar Samuelson who was a heroine addict.

The whole album is classic "Thrash Metal", one of the top tier echelons of accomplishments for a band. I've heard it so many times growing up that it would be ridicules to even attempt to try and count. By the way that is the staple of Thrash Metal, lots of change ups and riff's galore.....if you like those things you will continue to enjoy your adventure into the depths of these legendary musicians.
@metaltildeth6783

Yes, this whole album is a Thrash Metal master piece. Every song on 'Rust in Peace' is a classic with the exception of 'Dawn Patrol', which is basically just bass and drums with Mustaine reading the lyrics. The song is not bad, it just does not incorporate the whole band. 'Take No Prisoners', 'Five Magics', 'Lucretia', 'Poison Was the Cure' and 'Rust in Peace... Polaris' are lesser played gems. 'Hangar 18', 'Tornado of Souls' along with 'Holy Wars...' are the main songs most people like off this album.

Like spider fingering. Hell, without that technique alone we probably wouldn't have In Flames today. Their original stuff was almost nothing but spider fingering.

The first part of this song is a criticism of war fought on behalf of religion, specifically The Troubles in Northern Ireland. Megadeth was playing a concert there, and Dave kept hearing people talk about "the cause". During the concert, and not knowing what he was getting himself into, Dave shouted something like "this is for the cause!" before ripping into a cover of Anarchy In The U.K. This resulted in a riot, and the band had to be escorted out of the country. The second part of the song is about the Marvel character The Punisher, of whom Dave was quite a fan.

80s metal refers to war alot because most of the bands grew up during the cold war and Madd. Something about scrambling to get under under your desk for bomb drills and knowing that the whole planet was toast if MADD really kicked off. Kids today have to worry about school shooting but cold war kids had to worry about a flash of light that would blind them, sear their shadow into surfaces around them and turn them into a pile of ash that would be irradiated and scattered for miles by a blast wave traveling at 1200 mph. Those were the lucky kids. Those that survived the blasts would probably be slowly killed by radiation burns and sickness or starve to death in the nuclear winter that would follow even "limited" exchanges.

You should check out "symphony of destruction" by Megadeth next! It's a beast riding the same main riff throughout the song!

Megadeth always is a pleasure. A riff machine with one of the finest solos in the genre. If u want to dive into this record I recommend Five Magics. If u want to know other album I'd say Wake Up Dead from Its 2nd record 🤟

I recommend "Peace Sells, but Who's Buying", awesome follow up to this one. But also, a song you need to hear is "Et Tout Le Monde", one of Megadeths most controversial songs. Banned by MTV because "it was pro-suicide". But an awesome song!

Aileen, keep practicing! It really does take repetition. I learned this entire album and all the guitar solos in the mid 90’s. In comparison to Metallica songs, Megadeth, especially this album is a lot more challenging. If you like bass, death metal, prog check out Ne Obliviscaris- and plague flowers the kaleidoscope live in Denver. They’re an Australian band with a unique style that will definitely impress.

Dave Mustaine is not only an incredible musician, but an amazing lyricist !!!! He's always been so dialed in to what's happening, almost clairvoyant. Such an interesting, intelligent, and talented person. I love the guy, always have !!!! Megadeth 🤘🏼 And yes this was back when you were able to say exactly what you wanted. And they saw what's happening today coming for us. Now look around !!!!

The first part of the song, holy wars (up until the acoustic solo bit), is about the band's personal experiences in Ireland during the troubles. The second part, the punishment due, is about the punisher and how much of a badass he is😂

Megadeth was born from a resentment Dave Mustane (lead singer and shredder for Megadeth) had against Metallica for kicking him out of the band (due to his drinking problem). There are many similarities between the two. As a matter of fact, if you listen to Mechanix by Mega and The Four Horsemen by Metallica, it's basically the same song.

I've been playing guitar for 23 years. Here's a tip I've given people I've taught to help make your learning and progress a more pleasant experience. Use your pinky as much as possible. It's a finger that gets overlooked a lot. If you ignore it in the beginning, by the time you get comfortable taking on songs like Holy Wars, Master of Puppets, Lucretia, Rust in Peace, Tornado of Souls, or Jump in the Fire, you're gonna have a bad time. Hell, I still catch myself tucking my pinky from time to time. (Positioning it beneath the fretboard, often times under the neck as well.) It's not a good thing to do at all. It's bad form. So is anchoring your pinky on your strumming hand to the body/pick guard/bridge pickup. It can be difficult learning to float your strumming hand over the strings while accurately hitting the strings you're aiming for, but it's an important technique which will allow you to have an easier time learning more advanced strumming hand playing techniques. Like finger-picking and being able to go from picking to tapping and back fluidly. It's impossible to use either of those techniques while anchoring your pinky. I hope that helps you on your path to becoming a great guitarist! And don't worry, you don't have to be a radio-played household name in one of the biggest bands on the planet to be a great guitarist. So don't kick yourself too hard for not being able to play the Crazy Train solo by your tenth attempt at full speed. You'll get there. Trust me. Also: Looking forward to your first cover! 😉

This is an excellent intro to Megadeth and one of the greatest metal albums of all time! Also check out the guitar work on Five Magics and Tornado of Souls (consider by many as having one of the truly great metal solos...). Many other outstanding Megadeth albums/songs too... it's a rabbit hole! Enjoy the ride and stay well, Aileen!

So happy you chose Megadeth Holy Wars, a great introduction to one of the best 80's bands. You should try "A Tout Le Monde" next as it's a totally different style song from Megadeth, especially the one featuring cristina scabbia, her vocals really add to the ambiance of the song. So nice to see someone really enjoying the stuff we old farts used to listen to back in the day !

There are a ton of great Megadeth songs. First Megadeth song I ever heard was Sweating Bullets, and I think it will probably always be my favorite, so that’s my recommendation. It’s an unusual song, but absolutely incredible.

I absolutely love this song. The ironic part is they wrote this before the Gulf War and Desert Storm. Almost like they knew it was coming. It's crazy. It was released just a few months before it started. Megadeth always has it's pulse on society.
