So yes it's about Greek mythology. The boys however do not transform into creatures but they channel their powers , called Cosmo - literally the mini universe within them, through constellations. They each don armors, called Cloths based on their destined constellation. We have Seiya under the Pegasus constellation, Shiryu under the Dragon, Hyoga (blond) under the Cygnus constellation, Shun (green BOY) under the Andromeda constellation and Ikki (also Shun's older brother) under the Phoenix constellation. They all fight under Athena, the Greek Goddess of War as her warriors - the Saints. Every 200 years or so, she reincarnates on Earth to protect humanity against the evil forces of darkness namely other nefarious Greek Gods who want to conquer Earth. Later on, we discover that the main reason for these cyclic Holy Wars is to fight against Hades, the God of the Underworld who has been battling against her since the mythological eras. The manga originated in the 80s and predates even Dragon Ball in setting tropes that further Shounen would take. Bleach & Naruto's Soul Society & Sasuke Retrieval arc are directly inspired by Saint Seiya's Sanctuary arc. The story is a pure nekketsu Shounen and characters engage in death matches fighting for their ideals and belief in life; the 3rd Opening does encapsulates very well the melancholic sadness that imbues the journey of the boys. The OST, by the late Seiji Yokohama, is a pure masterpiece! The 80s anime adapted the 1st 2 arcs (Sanctuary and Poseidon along with the anime only Asgard arc). However due to a decline in the manga's popularity, the anime was stopped. It's only in 2003 - with the 3rd Opening - that it was continued as a set of 13 OVAs adapting the Hades arc. However because of behind the scenes conflicts, the rest of the OVAs (Inferno & Elysion arcs) had a diminished budget and thus why the OP went to a more traditional approach. The Art Style is legendary and was helmed by Shingo Araki & Michie Himeno dubbed as the Dynamic Duel. Araki namely created the 'Naruto run' as you see appearing at the start of the 2nd Opening as a way to cut costs and show the speed of the characters (the characters were said to be moving at the speed of light). Over the years, since 2003, Saint Seiya had a revival and has had loads of successful spin-offs manga series as well as several anime shows. I'd definitely recommend checking out the Lost Canvas OPs, it's drastically different from the OG as it's on a totally different Art Style made by another studio but it's without a doubt the best Saint Seiya animated product we've had.

Yeah, they are called Saints because they are fighters of gods and goddesses (in this case the saints of Athena? Goddess reincarnated in modern day). They don those armors called clothes that take their power from each constellation. For example Seiya's power comes from the Pegasus' constellation and that is why many of his attacks are represented with the figure of a pegasus in the background. The anime is about mostly them (the saints) fighting other gods that reincarnate into humans (and generally bring reincarnation to their past saints of their own in present day humans) whose objective is either to bring judgement onto mankind (destroy them or the world altogether) or rule the planet (or even take revenge from past defeats). It's a very complex story full of emotional twists that was way ahead of its time imo.

The first two OP are from the first and third seasons, the one from the second is the same as the third but changing the enemies, then the fans had to wait until 2002 for the premiere of the fourth season, that's why the change in animation and tone of the songs used.

The third one is so different because that whole season is essentially an animated tragedy, and my favorite overall. It’s a very sad arc where most of the characters are at their lowest point, even tho they have grown really powerful. Also this arc feels like the culmination of many storylines so far.

saint seiya is about the saints(the guardians of athena), and their mission to protect her from threats from the other gods in greek mythology. each saint wears what is called a "cloth" basically a magical armor based on a constellation. and those cloths have ranks, going from bronze to silver to gold. the gold saints being the most powerfull and using cloths based on the 12 zodiac houses. they are also the "royal guard" so to speak, protecting the sanctuary which is athena's personal territory on earth. as a side note, a gold saint is so powerfull that even 1 alone could completely obliterate the earth, which is why they are strictily prohibited from using their powers outside the sanctuary or other godly territories(in case of a holy war). finally, their power ranking is called cosmos, and its the ability to understand and control the laws of the universe, ranging from being able to break atoms with their hands, to opening portals to other dimensions,

To talk about the 3rd opening being so different, is cause the theme for the beginning of the season was about Loss and Sacrifice, being a contrast of the others wich is about the Fighting and Winning against the Enemy. That part of the show was heavy on the Emotions, and hard situation where In order to win you have to lose. And the last bit about is a Homage to the Gold Saints cause it was more about them then the regular cast ( to that point they have a spin-off, Soul of Gold, wich happens before the end of the Last season of the Main show).

Saint Seiya is a MASSIVE popular anime in Latin America and Europe. It's about greek mythology, the main character is Seiya, the bronze saint (kind of knight, but using constellations) of Pegasus, his and all other saints' job is to protect the Goddess Athena, and fight for justice and peace, against other gods from greek mythology, like Poseidon, Hades, etc. The main 5 you see in the openings are Pegasus Seiya, Dragon Shiryu, Andromeda Shun, Cygnus Hyouga and Phoenix Ikki. Of course, being an anime of constellations, there's the zodiac signs as well, they're the gold saints shown in some of the openings.

This is my favourite anime. Most of us in Latinamerica grew up watching mainly Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Naruto, Yu Gi Oh, Pokémon when much younger and so on. At some point it was even more famous than Dragon Ball, but then Dragon Ball Z came around and it just took over but for me it is always my favorite. I do have to say that the story seems very shallow nowadays in the first arc, but that just sets up the bases for the group that these 12 to 15 year old orphans form as the Bronze Saint who will protect the reincarnation of Athena called Saori (the purple haired woman). Seiya is the name of the main character using the Pegasus cloth (armour) that they carry around in those enormous boxes in their backs (you can see the mc carrying his at the beginning of the 3rd opening).

Saint seiya is pretty famous here in Brazil, and these openings dubbed in portuguese are unforgettable, enough to make me sing along 😂Cool to see you make the same assumptions that we all did, but yes, the vibe changing in each opening has a meaning to whats happening in their own arc, although an old anime with imperfections, It has a lot to give, cool fights, well thought out characters, a badass OST (my favorite part), thrilling mysteries and emotional moments. This is my favorite anime. It influenced a lot of my own works. The story is heavily based on Greek mythology with some others thrown in. The characters wear cloths, armors, based on the 88 constellions and are divided into three classes. Bronze, the lowest and what the mains use, Silver and Gold which are based on the 12 Zodiac signs. These are Athena's Saints, not be mistaked with Catholic saints, more like holy warriors. The main story is a civil among the saints, then Poseidon and finally Hades. The third opening is very reflective of what happens in the first part of that arc. It is very somber and hits hard if you have been reading/watching the series since the start. One opening they didn't put was for a filler season that was called Asgard. It was strictly done because the manga caught up to the anime so quickly. It is the same as the second but showing the Asgradian warriors instead of Poseidon's. It is worth watching but their are several plot changes that kinda make the story confusing. I recommed reading the manga thats on the Shonen App. The story is still going on with them going back in time and that will end soon. The final chapter named Heaven might actually become a reality to wrap up the series.

Ah !!! Saint Seiya ! These openings are so good, all of them ! Yet, the third one has such a special feel to me ! I grew up with the series but I discovered the Hades arc in my teens. I just fell in love with it. I can see how Saint Seiya made me appreciate man with long hair. Indeed they are protecting/fighting for her, she is Athena and everyone else are the "Knight's of Athena" or "Athena's Saints". The full name for this series is "Saint Seiya: Knigths of the Zodiac" and in some countries it was even just "Knights of the Zodiac" on it's own. That's also why there are so many depictions of constellations in the openings; every knight represents a Zodiac sign, the main character, Seiya is knight of pegasus.

Seiya is the protagonist of the work, as the name says he is a saint, (saint seiya) he is the saint of pegasus, but with the bronze rank. The power they use is the micro cosmos, just as the big bang expanded from 1 tiny point, the bodies of the saints are derived from the same logic, being able to expand the small universe within them. And the determining factor for the micro cosmos level is how much the saint can elevate himself spiritually by connecting with the universe, which is derived from Buddhist teachings. The greater the feeling of connection with the universe, the greater the control over it, and this control comes from the 7th sense, the greatest sensation of the cosmos for living beings.

Also Andromeda Shun, the green haired character is a 13 year old male and is crying because he feel used/discarred. His 15 year old brother Phoenix Ikki was sent to an island that was almost certain death to get the armor that was mesnt for him so that he could live and get his own armor. Together with other three guys Pegasus Seiya, Cignus Hyoga and Dragon Shiryu collectively known as the Bronze Knights they went through a lot in order to protect the guardian of the Earth, 20th century incarnation of the Greek goddess Athena. After all they did for her in which many of their friends died and they almost lost their lives multiple times they were adviced that they weren't needed anymore. They don't know it but Athena and her remining Gold Knights decided to give them a rest after all they did because they knew they would surely die becauae this clash would be against the armies of hell and the god of the dead Hades. They eventually get involved regardless.

You guessed right a lot of things: the greek theme and same astrology/astronomy theme as Sailor Moon (more constellation ions instead of planets) but first two saint seiya seasons came first. The whole production keep having some issues 'cause misunderstanding between the manga and the TV productions.. long story indeed! This anime is particularly popular in my country Italy where it received a particular and very epic adaptation mixing Dante and other aulic phrases to the original dialogues and Latino America. Beautiful diecast action figures from Bandai are also extremely popular and well spelled 'till today!

2:00 funny but fact abt power rangers is that it is an american version to the OG super sentai that aired back in 1975 and all the fighting scenes from power rangers are just scenes they took from the japanese version

Green haired one is a guy... matter-of-factly, only the pink haired one is a woman. The one in the white armour is Seiya, the one in pink is Shun, the one in green in Shiryu, the blonde one is Hyoga, and the one with blue-ish hair is Ikki. Ikki is Shun's older brother. They are the "saints" of Athena, and the warriors of the zodiac or something like that. They wear armours based on constellations.

One show I loved when I was a kid was Yu Yu Hakusho. It only has the same intro music, though maybe different visual variants? Not sure. But the protag of it still remains one of my favorite shonen protagonists. And a rare example of an extremely well done dub. Well done enough that they even made a Live Action for it.

This series was indeed inspired somewhat by Super Sentai (og Power Rangers from Japan), the OG Dragon Ball anime and believe it or not Karate Kid. It instead indeed inspired Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z.
