Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another PATREON recommendation with T'Pau "Heart and Soul." T'Pau is wonderful and vocalist Carol Decker has an amazing voice. Filled with synths, layered vocals, and catchy chorus this is a keeper; see why now!

I'm such a fan. I loved this song when it was brand new and I love it even more today. I wore out that album. My favorite song is still the title track, "Bridge of Spies" -- I do an absolutely terrible singalong to that one in the car because I have an awful voice but I bellow along at full volume anyway! Thank you for the wonderful music!

her autobiography explains why as well. They broke in the US first, then finally Virgin decided to push the album in the UK when they'd had the US number 1.... and they ended up abandoning the US tour part of the way through and never went back. Bad management decision.

This became my favorite song of the 80's by the first chorus. You may have heard it in Black Mirror - San Junipero. I still don't understand how this band was a one-hit wonder in the US but were pretty big in Europe for a few years in the late 80's through the early 90's.

I bought this song on 12-inch vinyl not long after it came out. There is a version on it called "The 4-12 Mix" that separates the 2 vocal tracks, so you can hear all of the "rap" part by itself. That debut album "Bridge of Spies" (in Canada) hardly left my yellow Sony Walkman for the last half of '87 and most of '88. So many good songs on it that were not released in North America.

Carol Decker had one of the greatest voices ever! There are tons of outstanding T'Pau songs: Whenever You Need Me, With A Little Luck, Wing and a Prayer, Bridge of Spies, Man & Woman, You Give Up, On the Wing, and You Never Noticed Me would be my recommendations to really get an all-around feel for the group.

Carol is very active on X aka Twitter and almost always tweets you back if you @ her something positive or funny. She is great with her fans. Has a wicked sense of humour too. I love her! Where you may have heard this song before is it featured in an episode of S3e04 of Black Mirror. Its also in a scene in the 2015 movie "Sisters" where Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's characters sing along to it on the radio in their car. And of course finally, it was famously featured in a Pepe's jeans ad in the 80s which led to this song becoming a huge hit in America.

About the success of the song in the UK, indeed China In your Hands, the first single was much more successful there hitting the number one. The Brits didn't like HaS much because they thought it sounded too "American" hence its success in the USA.

When she performed it live back in the day, Ronnie Rogers, the guitarist and backing vocalist who was co-writer with Carol on most of their songs would do the "rap" part most of the time. It was obviously not as good as Carol doing both parts, but we can't have everything. (And Ronnie did some very fun covers of "I'm a Believer" and "Walk Away Renee" in concerts while Carol was doing wardrobe changes.) If you want another example of them doing this layered sort of sound, check out "Island". There's no video, but the audio is on KZbin, and the way the vocals are done is similar but the song is still different, and it's one of my favorites. (Which honestly describes almost everything T'Pau did except maybe a small handful of tracks.) Also, you were noticing the way Carol's dancing shadow was moving at one point. If you search KZbin you'll find a different cut of the video where you could see Carol dancing full body... and I'll let you re-draw your own conclusions. lol. (Carol, if you see this, love ya, sorry. ;) )

Something in the moonlight catches my eye The shadow of a lover goes dancing by Looking for a little bit of love to grow, so Give me love, give me heart and soul You never let me cross to the other side now I'm tied to the hope that you will somehow Hard on the heels of something more But I lost your love, heart and soul The tear in my heart as you walk on by (more than an ocean) I feel so low and your head is high Everything you do convinces me more (keeps us apart) Please, give me love, give me heart and soul Looking to the day when I saw your face (I feel a tearing in half of my heart) I wasn't in the running, I wasn't in the race You move in a way that I've known before Now I want your love, heart and soul Tired eyes, tears that dried (leaving you ain't easy now) On the bed, on the pillow, where the love has died (loving you's the harder part) A turn of the key, through the door you go (you never want me for myself) Don't look back, to hurt me more (now I've needed you right from the very start) Everything you said was to the point Can't you try to (oh won't you even try to) Give a little bit of heart and soul (give a little bit of heart and soul) Give a little bit of love to grow Give a little bit of heart and soul (give a little bit of heart and soul) And don't you make me beg for more (must I beg you) Give a sign, I need to know A little bit of heart and soul Walking on the water, walking on the air (a walk on the water) That was the heart of the love we shared Do you keep secret left untold (is all that I need) Can't give love, heart or soul I used to have a lover with a Midas touch (but miracles are not happening) I turned to gold but he turned to dust Left me for another, I turned to stone Now give me love, heart and soul Tired eyes, tears that dried (living in a fantasy) On the bed, on the pillow, where you told your lies (there's never any room to breathe) A turn of the key, my blood runs cold (hoping every waking hour) Don't look back to hurt me more (you'll turn around and say that we can start) Everything you did just said it all Can't you try to (oh won't you even try to) Give a little bit of heart and soul (give a little bit of heart and soul) Give a little bit of love to grow Give a little bit of heart and soul (give a little bit of heart and soul) And don't you make me beg for more (must I beg you) Give a sign, I need to know A little bit of heart and soul Somehow, I lost my way Looking to see something in your eyes But love will never compromise Now this is the politics of life, yeah! Give a little bit of heart and soul (give a little bit of heart and soul) Give a little bit of love to grow Give a little bit of heart and soul (give a little bit of heart and soul) And don't you make me beg for more (must I beg you) Give a sign, I need to know A little bit, little bit

Alanis Morissette did a song called Too Hot in her early pop days (1991) before she turned angry rocker chick and I have a suspicion she got highly inspired by this song. She goes through the same vocal changes with the spoken parts and loud hook. I'd love to know your impression on it and if you also think she might have taken her inspiration from this song.

I'm 49 years old, and a HUGE music fan and audiophile since I was about 8 years old, and I can genuinely say that this is without a doubt one of the most underrated songs of all time.

@@jevousemmerdetouslesthunde2391 Well.. better than I expected. But maybe this is my Vulcan side which expressed some emotion here, which is, wrt to Vulcan philosophy, pretty odd. ;)

Derek, the T in T'Pau is pronounced Tə with the schwa sound.

Yep. If you ever watched Star Trek: Enterprise, the T'Pol character is from the same species as the T'Pau character from TOS that the band is named after. The pronunciation of that T' follows the same pattern for Vulcans generally. And yes, I'm a colossal nerd. ;)
