This is mostly a Lennon song, and he was the master of IMAGERY. With words alone he could transport the listener to another place, or time, even somewhere fictional. He could paint images with words. Paul McCartney was a master of melody (most of the time, both could swap from time to time, but generally)

Their whole "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album is incredible. My record is scratched up and the songs skip, but I've hung onto it since 1967. Best way to spend my hard-earned babysitting money was to buy a new LP.

To go from Love Me Do in 1962, to this, in little over 4 years, is a complete metamorphosis. Of course, mind altering drugs helped, but they were four extremely talented guys from Liverpool. Not bad, considering some people still call them a boyband. Some people are just bonkers.

The orchestral climax was created by have the full orchestra in the studio go from a specific low note to a specific high note over a give measure (amount of time) during which they could play anything the wanted. The brilliance of George Martin and of course the band that changed music over and over again for all time
@patticrichton1135
@patticrichton1135 Жыл бұрын
Each member of the orchestra was to go from the lowest note their particular instrument could play and crescendo up to the highest note their instrument could play at their own speed, they were not told to play anything they wanted inbetween....it was simply to go from their lowest to highest note.

CASH, this song is on what’s often considered to be the greatest album ever recorded by anyone, The Beatles 1967 classic “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. It’s meant to be listened to all the way through, all of the songs link together. The best way to listen to this album is with headphones with your eyes closed in a darkened room. The use of weed also helps, but not to the point that you can’t pay attention.

I was 14 years old in 1967 when this album came out. Imagine hearing this for the very first time. And all these years later I feel so lucky that I was alive at that time. And it’s so refreshing to see younger people discovering the great music that the Beatles made.

This is the outro of their 8th album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hears Club Band. It's a loose concept album, with the idea basically being "What if we weren't the Beatles?". Since the album was about them not being the Beatles, they didn't have to do anything they would usually do, and even changed how they looked. Some instruments are panned to the left or to the right. Most Beatles songs are played in stereo audio, which is when you have 2 speakers, and can pan certain parts of the song to one speaker. The orchestral bits are described by John as "war sounds", and the vocalizing after Paul's part is called "the dream sequence." The ending chord of the song is an E-major, played on 4 pianos and a harmonium all at once. They hold the chord for around 40 seconds, and you have to turn your volume up a good amount every few seconds to hear the full thing. Sometime after the chord ends on the version without a music video, a high pitched ringing starts, and a sound loop suddenly plays, and if you're listening on the vinyl, doesn't stop looping until you turn it off. That version also fades in from the previous song on the album. By this point, you need to react to their full albums in full, from their first to their last, in order. Glad you enjoyed it!

Here's a really nerdy explanation for why you heard the drums in only one ear at the start. When this was recorded, Abbey Road Studios had four-track tape machines. On those four tracks they had to record: John's Voice Paul's Voice Piano (two actually) Acoustic guitar Drums Bass Maracas An orchestra (two tracks) And some sound effects. You don't want to try and record it all at one time, if for no other reason than when you record 11 things on four tracks, you can't make any substantial changes to the mix. So what they probably did was record 4 things to individual tracks (probably one piano, acoustic guitar, drums, and bass) and when you're happy with that mix, "bounce down" to two tracks, record two more tracks and repeat until you're done, and can make a two-track master tape. Normally the drums are placed fairly close to the center of the stereo mix, but because the orchestral parts are so dense the drums would get lost. So when they did the first bounce down, they panned the drums hard right so they'd be easier to pick out. And on the last piano chord, they kept cranking up the microphone gain to wring the last tiny droplet of sound out of the note 29 seconds into it, someone shits their weight and one of the piano benches creaks, and one of them very quietly says "Shh". From that point on, you can start to hear the a/c units in the studio until the piano disappears into the sound.

Funny you should mention Pink Floyd, since they were recording their debut album at the same Abbey Road Studios at the same time that The Beatles did Sgt. Pepper, and the two bands were dropping in on each other frequently to see how each other were doing. The psychedelic influence was clearly flowing in both studios, and both records became landmark albums of the era.

You've just listened to what us still regarded as the greatest Lp track ever 55 years after it was recorded in 1967. I promise young man that if you live to be 100 you will never see another Beatles. These 4 were one-offs, freaks, musical genius with this band. The true GOAT'S in the history of recorded music. What they accomplished in 7 short years between 1962-69 is unparalleled and crazy and it will never be matched. Keep digging young man, you'll be blown away. This band dabbled into just about every genre of music that you can think of. No boundaries, nothing was off limits and still all in their twenties when they released their last album "Abbey Road" in 1969. That's a record that you really need to give a listen to. Incredible stuff. Peace !

That's funny, it also reminds me of Pink Floyd. Especially earlier Pink Floyd. Yeah man, I do not have a favorite Beatles song because they have so many and it's like comparing apples to oranges every single time. Even the early stuff. There is not a Beatles song that I don't actively like and they had a whole bunch of songs and a whole bunch of albums. But I absolutely love the immersive atmospheric experience of this song which I think is what you were alluding to.

this song is best heard in the sequence it appears on the album. without the video. watch the video later. but the last three songs of the "sgt pepper" album, of which this is the third, should be heard as one continuous experience. at the end of the album, this song, there's also a little surprise.

I do agree that watching all the busy, unrelated activity of the video does distract rather from following the narrative of the song, and the images and emotions it can evoke when heard on its own. On the other hand, it's fun spotting all the famous people that were there, milling about, and making the orchestra wear those false noses/specs etc does reflect nicely the arty surrealism of the song as a whole. IIRC, those professional classical musicians were not too happy about about that strange uniform request - or for that matter about the MOST peculiar things they were being asked to perform... No score? No conductor? Just go from the bottom note of your instrument to the top in x minutes...? Complete madness...! :-)
