That's a pedal steel guitar some call it a lap steel guitar but either one works! He also plays that instrument in the song "One of These Days" and "Great Gig In the Sky" with both of those songs also played during this Pulse concert! He also plays it in one more song which escapes me at the time! So glad you did the live version because so many people do the studio version from the album and think that is a regular guitar David is playing. Then when someone sees him playing the lap steel/pedal steel the reaction from someone seeing it the first time is always interesting!

Lost is the acoustic guitar at the beginning and at the end - change is so subtle

It is not a pedal steel...a pedal steel mainly used in Western Swing and counyry actually has knee and foot pedals to change pitch..this is a pure lap steel...you are dead wrong!

Can never go wrong with any tune from the 'Pulse' concert. Your perception of live music will be changed forever when you view the entire concert--it includes the entire live version of 'Dark Side of the Moon' along with their more contemporary catalogue. Enjoy!

When David plays his lap steel guitar he is putting tears to music. The sound is always emotional to me and leads to a tear or two. He's not putting music to tears. It's tears to music.

A lap steel, sounds like a supercharged slide guitar. Floyd and the Beatles came up with sounds that blew everyone’s mind. Oh,and I was there at Earls Court on the second night and the whole show changed my life and plenty of others who witnessed it October,1994.

In the 'Live at Pompeii 2016' version, David does a much longer acoustic guitar solo at the end of the song after playing the steel guitar. It adds much more depth to the end of the song. There is also a version on HDPinkFloyd where David replaces the electric bass guitar with a standup bass and adds a cello to the mix.

That's a Steel Guitar they were big in Country Songs back then and Pink Floyd was the First one that I've seen ever used one.

As jonhenke said, that's a pedal steel guitar. A development from the slide guitar, which originated as a normal guitar played with a slider or 'steel' (hence the name). I love the unique sound it makes and the way it can slide continuously between notes - Gilmour makes the most of it in this track.

Guys, horizontal electric guitar. Unlike an electric or acoustic guitar, the steel guitar is played horizontally, in fact it is shaped like a table and does not have a sound box, unless it is an acoustic model.

One of my favorite Pink Floyd songs. David Gilmour knows how to make every note sing . He’s a master musician. You must watch the Johnny Cash version of the song Hurt( by Trent Reznor / band Nine In Nails) . It’s a must.

It is a lap steel...not a pedal steel...a pedal steel has knee and foot pedals to change pitch...that is a pure lap steel...more fret work required to change notes/pitch....the pedal steel is mainly used in Country and Western Swing music...a much later instrument than the lap steel, which originated in Hawaiian music.
