There's a video out there when she was promoting her first ever major concert where she mentioned she started singing competitions since she was 6 years old and became the bread winner of her family ever since. She said she grew up in a place where life was very poor. And over the years would win competitions with cash awards where they gave out P10k, 7k, and 5k, for 1st second and third place. And some competitions offered 30k for first place which would really help out her family. Through those years she would pick up tips and tricks from other contestants and sometimes the completions offered warm up drills by vocal instructors and she'd learned from that also. It wasn't until recently, where she was able to find the courage to reach and go for those belting notes she's now known for because she was scared of what she could or maybe couldn't achieve. I think that's why, when Regine surprised her at Katrina's first concert (a must see reaction by the way because Katrina idolizes Regine), she gave an advice to her to not be afraid to be successful. To not hold back. Even tho there have been setbacks in her personal life that would have stopped a regular person in their tracks, Katrina manages to get back up stronger and better. I know Mori has been given the title, but Katrina, like the legendary stories of the Phoenix, always rises above the ashes. Katrina truly deserves the world 🌎

I was curious like you but got informed when I came across her name a while back, that she never went through any regimental and professional vocal training ever in her musical carrier and in her personal life that should have come with opportunities for progress. It is said that in her country, they have these frequent enclave singing events, in or outside their urban areas, where anyone who can sing displays their skills and compete to win some monetary rewards. In her youth, she is said to join these competitions to help out her family. Significant deprivation is the reason, I suppose, that led her to endure her difficulties as a young person which taught her the means to exercise her mind and singing talent to achieve excellence. I believe professional training and vocal instructors during her youth and adolescent years became inconsequential. Being partially a breadwinner at that tender age, I reckon, makes one mature fast characteristically in traits and in her case, also singing. She was once asked by her mid-school teacher due to her lagging behind in school attendance, (she usually gets home at dawn from a singing competition the previous night), to choose between school and singing. She chose singing irrevocably. 😱 Family is her priority in almost every opportunity that comes her way. She once got invited by Ellen DG but refused the offer since her child was still very young, and she'll miss the wonderful times with her son. I view her life and musical accomplishments like a velcro. One strip has the hard and rough hook; while the other strip is the fussy, loop side. Put these two strips together, and you'll get a strong, stable, long-lasting, unshakeable fastener. She fastens herself to her family and her vocal talent very well. She is very admirable. I Am Changing is from the Broadway musical Dreamgirls, originally sung by Jennifer Holiday. The movie Dreamgirls was produced in the mid 2000 and this song was sung by Jennifer Hudson.

at around 12 mins & some change re: disagreement on vocal nuances... i'm gonna actually agree (superficially, at least) with the guy who has amazing things coming outta whatever end ;) haha... i say superficially because i think here what katrina is doing is just putting that soulful UMPH!! into it, y'know, SANGing for real when she does this song, because yes, j hud is very much this way stylistically (y'all oughta check out her cover of j hud's version of "& i am telling you"...she really shows off the j hud nuances there!), *BUT* also because of the song's origins in broadway/show tunes. katrina truly is an excellent performer, both in her mic technique and her ability to emote a song's meaning.

Aside from joining amateur singing contest, professional singing contest and self-taught, also her regular gig in The Music Hall it helped a lot to hone her singing talent and also a training ground as good performer and singer.

She is a protege of Gary Valenciano, one of the living legend artists in the Philippines that younger Filipino artists look up to for inspirations and guidance. Please check him out too, especially his performance of “Spain”, which Katrina also included in her Latin Medley. Gary used to bring her in his US concerts where she met her late husband, Mike Shapiro. Mike was Gary’s choice of percussionist/drummer to play in most, if not all, of his concerts in the US.

she started singinv ang joining amateur singing competitions at an early age. she joined several tv competitions. one was when she was around 12, it's called Little Big Star, if I'm not mistaken. there's a video of that on KZbin where she sang a Whitney Houston song. she had a big voice at an early age...
