Only one person in the world could cover this & do it justice, & his name was Daryle Singletary, & now he’s gone too…

This is essentially Johnny Paycheck writing his own eulogy song. It's from the end of his career and may be the greatest song he ever wrote. As far as his career, he went to prison for shooting someone (thankfully non-lethally), so he was literally put away, although he did often say that going to prison probably saved his life. He was a wild one. If you want more info, check out Tales from the Tour Bus episode 1 about him and his career.

This has always been a favorite Johnny Paycheck song and there is a live version that he performed near the end of his life and that makes it even more powerful.

I think you will like this poem: The Touch of the Master's Hand 'Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer Thought it scarcely worth his while To waste much time on the old violin, But held it up with a smile. "What am I bidden, good folks," he cried, "Who'll start the bidding for me?" "A dollar, a dollar. Then two! Only two? Two dollars, and who'll make it three?" "Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice; Going for three…" But no, From the room, far back, a grey-haired man Came forward and picked up the bow; Then wiping the dust from the old violin, And tightening the loosened strings, He played a melody pure and sweet, As a caroling angel sings. The music ceased, and the auctioneer, With a voice that was quiet and low, Said: "What am I bid for the old violin?" And he held it up with the bow. "A thousand dollars, and who'll make it two? Two thousand! And who'll make it three? Three thousand, once; three thousand, twice, And going and gone," said he. The people cheered, but some of them cried, "We do not quite understand. What changed its worth?" Swift came the reply: "The touch of the Master's hand." And many a man with life out of tune, And battered and scarred with sin, Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd Much like the old violin. A "mess of pottage," a glass of wine, A game - and he travels on. He is "going" once, and "going" twice, He's "going" and almost "gone." But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd Never can quite understand The worth of a soul and the change that is wrought By the touch of the Master's hand. by Myra Welch

Johnny Paycheck did it originally, but as good as it is, you need to check out Daryl Singletary’s remake of it… and Johnny Paycheck did the exertatjon for it and it was the very last thing Johnny ever did with music before he passed…

This is one of the best songs ever written. I think a lot of people can relate to it. You should play your flute, don’t let your passion just sit there. Love your breakdown of the lyrics.

This song makes me tear up every time that I hear it. I had an uncle who had a stroke and it caused him to not be able to work anymore and on top of that a couple of years later he had to have a leg amputated. He said that this was his favorite song because it reminded it of himself. A beautiful song but also sad in a way

I've known those feelings many times in my life and somehow made it through. My wife of 30 years passed away 5 years ago and I went in the hospital 3 months later and lost my home at the same time. But 7 months ago a girl I dated in highschool 50 years ago called me and we're a couple now and life is good. So don't hang up just keep going and something good will come your way. It did for me

Johnny lived a rough life . He was in prison at some point . He was in a nursing home when he died and didn’t even have the money for his funeral. George Jones paid for his funeral ❤
