Fun fact: the school they attend to actually exists in real life. The Toyosato Elementary School was saved financially by this anime, even though it doesn't work as a school anymore, they turned it into a community center all visitors can enter to, it was declared a national heritage, and yes, there are K-on girls images everywhere

I went there in 2017 and it was like a dream to see one of my favorite anime in real life. Everything you see in the anime is exactly like the Toyosato Elementary School. They also decorated their club room with their bags, shoes and much more from the anime and of course there are tea cups and cake on the table 😆

Fun fact 2: Gibson also sponsored the anime and they achieved an all-time sales record for the Gibson Les Paul standard (same guitar that plays the protagonist). In addition, at that time, a large number of girls enrolled in music schools to learn play the guitar. This is crazy.

@maxb krab - Their schools name is Sakuragaoka High School. "Ho-kago Tea Time" roughly translate as ‘After school activity Tea Time’. As point by the OC, the fictional Sakuragaoka High School is based on the disused Toyosato Elementary school in Shiga prefecture.

K-ON is one of my favorites anime of all time, it's a show that warms hearts, no unnecessary drama, no battles, no stress, it's just enjoying the daily life of a group of friends, with a quiet comedy that brings out good smiles, of course, there is music, but it's just an excuse to show you how beautiful an anime can be without having a complex story. I highly recommend this show, of course, if you like this style of anime.

The Endings are all among the best endings I have ever heard The OPs are fun, but the EDs are just bangers "Lazy", "Listen" and "Thank you" (don't know if these are the actual titles, just called them that for a long time now) are for me songs that will be never forgotten also: I love the outfits they use in the Endings, from highly stylish dresses to casual outfits, to weird mixes of stuff no one would wear

The way to look at is that the openings are Yui songs: always happy and bouncing with tons of colour. The endings are Miu songs: more deep and thoughtful. That's why there's such a disconnect sometimes.

Also, a bit of detail; the opening and ending songs were credited as yui as the composer, while the in anime songs such as fuwa fuwa time are written by mugi. That's why in fuwa fuwa time, there's a few advanced chords that, in no way, composed by yui since she is still nee to guitar. Compared to OP and ED that has no advanced chords.

I am late but I like to think of the OPs and EDs as this... The OPs are performed by Yui. They are meant to be more of an amateur music videos which is why they are based inside the school, like someone taking videos from a phone or camera and editing them together. On the other hand, the ED's are performed by Mio. They are meant to be more of a professional music video, hence the costumes, artistic lighting, and amount of production that would be involved to make the video itself...

I'm not sure if it's canon or not, but I like to imagine the endings are their music videos. The show is very much about the school life of the band and the antics they get up to. It's very obvious that who ever was involved with making this show knew their stuff about music.

My all time favourite anime. It's an slice of life music anime. There are after school activities on the schoolground, and they wanted to form a music band. It shows their club activities when classes are over, how they practice and make new songs in their clubroom. And ofcourse the fun they have. The true lead singer of Ho-Kago Tea Time isn't Aki Toyosaki's Yui, but Yoko Hikasa's Mio. HTT being Ho-Kago Tea Time. The girl with the keyboard is their resident rich but sweet girl Tsumugi "Mugi-chan" Kotobuki. The twintails you missed in OP 1 v.2 *is* Azusa Nakano, their rhythm guitarist. The short-haired girl with the headband is their drummer and club leader Ritsu Tainaka. They each have *very* unique, and expensive, instruments. Yui's is a Gibson Les Paul Standard in Heritage Cherry Sunburst, named Giita. Mio's is a Fender Precision Bass (Left-Handed Variant), called "Elizabass". Mugi's keyboard is a KORG Triton 128-key variant. Azusa wields a Fender Japan Mustang 1969 Reissue in Candy Apple Red, called "Mu-tan". Ritsu's drum set is a Yamaha Rick Marotta Signature Hipgig in Mellow Yellow. The four original girls are meant to be analogues for The Beatles, with Azusa coming in representing the fans as the Fifth Beatle. However, their instruments come from The Alan Parsons Project.

Oh that's an interesting comment. I was always wondering who the true lead of singer of HTT truly is. Mio was the original lead singer but we eventually see Yui sing more than Mio so I assumed that Yui became the lead singer because of Mio's shy personality. Yui was also the main focus of the first season so we see a lot of episodes from her point of view. In season 2, it seems that Azusa became the focus of a lot of episodes.

This is such a fun anime. It is a slice of life story about friends who hang around after school to do band things. HTT is the abbreviation of their band name which is Houkago Tea Time (Afterschool Tea Time). The song in the anime are very good too (the songs made by the band). My favorite is Tenshi ni Fureta Yo (Touched by an Angel), still bring me to tears everytime I listen to it.

One of the best parts of this anime is that the voice actresses actually learned how to play their instruments and performed a live concert in front of 35k people! It's amazing how much love and passion is behind this anime. Voice actresses are like superstars in japan and are very busy but they still took the time and effort to learn how to play guitar, bass, keyboard and drums.

K-ON! is still the best music anime in my opinion. The story is great, the music is really good, and it is addictive. A must see! The openings feature the lead singer Yui. The endings feature the bass player, Mio. Truth be told the whole soundtrack is banger, including the character songs.

In the series canon they are also written by those two, Yui being the one with the upbeat happy time songs, while Mio with her more melancholic outlook writes the darker toned endings. Which is why my personal Yui favourite will alway be U & I because it´s a rare gem of seriousness from the otherwise ditzy character.

She has mentioned she used to watch it as a kid...The girls (in the show) do some work as Maids in a cafe...to help Mio with her nerves...Akane (BAND-MAID drummer) was a member of a K-On! club at school...but she was the only member I believe...poor Akane.

K-On was one of the early anime I watched and I had a great time with it. They are adorable and sometimes got me laughing my ass off. They have different personalities that fit so well as a group of friends and seeing them develop that relationship is the best thing about the show. Another amazing thing about the show is how the voice-actresses sang all the songs and gotta say almost all of the songs are bops. Including the openings, endings and some songs in the show. this is a great show made by kyoto animation, one of the most renowned animation studios (seriously, they have made some incredable shows and movies) its a slice of life show that tends to be very laid back and wholesome, really its just about hanging out with friends. it has 2 seasons and a movie, and i would highly recommend checking it out along with some of kyoani's other works, especially "a silent voice" if you are ready for a heartbreaking but beautiful movie

K ON! = Kei Ongaku (Bu) = Light Music (Club). In Japan they have these school club activities where you dedicate yourself to a specific interest (such as chess, swimming, a.s.o.), and in the case of this show that interest would be music. These lasses join the Light Music Club, and we then get to see snippets of their daily lives together, and the mundane adventures that they undertake..! I love the show, I have watched the entire thing about four times, and it's such a great time! It's all very relaxed, with a comedic touch, and a pinch of... sugar..! I do acknowledge that it takes a certain taste in anime to enjoy the whole slice-of-life genre that features adolescents, but that's all up to personal preference.

I've watched anime since the 60s, being old and stuff. I found K-ON! online during the end of its first season and followed religiously, even going to Japan for the movie, but missing it due to rescheduling. Kyoto animation draws everything so lovingly, uses CGI to do the instruments, and employs rack focus and vignette focus quite often for subtle and effective touches. Though the story is "slice of life", and very little actually transpires, it's a fun romp through high school friendship. There are practically no men or boys in this, and parents are rarely seen or heard. It's an anime masterpiece, artistically. Story wise: fun and wonderful, but about as deep as a kiddie pool.

The artificial Band of "Hokago Tea Time" has actually two singers like you propably recognized. I think it is just fitting that Yui always sings the openings and Mio is always the main voice of the endings. Also the openings are filmed at hotshots of school- and bandlife, when the endings are look like actual produced music videos... which gives me hope and some kind of mental rest that they actually got contracted Edit: I think I also have to state, that every single HTT song is actually possible to be played with the setup of the band. They don't need to rely on pre-records or samples for these songs to work.

Love this anime. It's often my work anime, meaning I play the episodes on a second screen while I work. The only unrealistic part about this slice-of-life feel-good show is how 'good' they are on stage, considering how little they practice on-screen. So K-On is a show about some high school girls who form a band together. It's a very lighthearted and fun show, but it is incredibly good. I think for a music lover there's almost no better show to introduce you to the "Slice of Life" anime genre. Of course, I say "Almost" for a reason, because some shows from this year are able to stand alongside it in quality. Namely, I think that you could also have a lot of fun with both "Bocchi the Rock" and "Ya Boi Kongming". I'd also recommend the openings and endings from either of them as the OP and ED from both are great. Edit: Okay, it's been so long that I forgot about how good ED 3 was visually. You pointed out that it has a bit of a darker feel and uses a more muted color palette, but did you notice that in addition to lowering the overall color saturation, they intentionally chose very mute colors while the band members were alone but then switched to dressing them in bright colors that punch through the lowered saturation when they all come together? Just an absolutely beautiful bit of visual storytelling there, but that's to be expected from Kyoto Animation (who are all but legendary for their visual and animation quality).

Fun Fact: K-On is a "Slice of Life" anime - literally cute girls doing cute things in a school club setting and is considered a seminal SoL (slice of life) music anime. K-On is one of my favourite anime of all time in the genre. Lyrics about individually and independence are actually considered very rebellious and messages of individual achievement and actualization is very counter-culture to Japanese traditional collectivism.

This anime was BIG, it was the start (but not the first one) of a particular anime genere called, "cute girls duing cute stuff" ofc there are animes that did that before, but this one was the pinnacle of everthing it was moe. This anime probably caused this amazing generation of female musicians that we are enjoing now XD. The duality of the ops and endings you can kind of meta of how they transitioned from the school days to a mature female rock band.

Their band had 2 vocal on their song, if the song is fun, bouncy, innocent, cute, sweet etc the vocal is Yui who play a guitar rhytm. . When the song is cool, agresive, rock, cold etc the vocal is MiO who play bass . The theme of this anime series is a school life n they making a club for band music who already gone on their school n then they trying making a song, trying make a concert at club host music etc . Yui song is bright, fun, etc bcs this character is kinda goofy silly but cute n she's new on guitar instrument bcs of this club school That's why her song is so carefree but still full of fun . MiO the bassist is alrd veteran on music specially bass guitar. That's why her song is more mature cool dark rockish etc

I think the OP are supposed to be written by the Brown hair girl singing them, and the ED are by the Black hair girl singing those. Or at least represent them. The brown hair girl Yui, is a pure air headed optimist that's incredibly sweet. Which leads to a chaotic happy song. The one singing in the EDs is Mio who normally writes the lyrics to the band's songs if I remember correctly. She is an introvert and a bit of a pessimist. So we get much more introspective and thought out lyrics from the song. At least that's my interpretation.
