25:53 actual film has effectively INFINITE resolution, it captures actual light on what is effectively a 1 to 1 scale, your only limitation at that point is what to display it on. Old box TVs couldn't display the entire resolution of film, that was why _theaters_ gained their reputation as the go to for watching movies, a large canvas to project light onto was the only way to truly see the full quality of a movie. The advent of digital video and film upturned all this, it basically set back film quality by several decades, and it's been playing gradual catch-up to what film could already do ever since. The old movie theater experience your grandparents and great-grandparents knew had several times the visual quality of almost every TV or screen you've ever had.
@promontorium6 ай бұрын
1 to 1? You mean photon to photon? Film has a resolution limit, it's the size of the halide crystals, and probably the dead space between has an effect.
@JETZcorp6 ай бұрын
A 4k scan is what you need to pull all the detail out of a 35mm film negative, which was the standard for professional cinema and full-frame photo cameras. But that's to accurately capture the grain structure - native 4k digital is more detailed than 35mm, assuming professional quality equipment. Digital still hasn't caught up to IMAX. Scans could be made, but they don't have cameras to capture that kind of resolution, and editing with those files would be the devil's own job.

One of my all time favourite movies! Rick Moranis ended up costing Mel Brooks "a lot" of money, since the crew (including Brooks) couldn't help but laugh during his scenes, most notably when he first appears on screen and has breathing problems. George Lucas lended the services of his company ILM to shoot some scenes. The escape pod dropping out was actually a (once) deleted scene from A New Hope. He agreed to let Brooks make the movie on the condition that he couldn't make merchandise, hence the running gag throughout the movie. And he didn't want Lone Star to dress like Han, so Brooks chose to dress him like Indiana Jones. Rick Moranis improvised the entire scene where he plays with his dolls, he was sick and had a fever that day and still came up with one of the best scenes. The original title was Planet Moron. Brooks had a bad reaction to the Yogurt make up and got a bad rash around his eyes. The voice Dark Helmet has when his... dark helmet visor is down is inspired by David Prose, the physical actor for Darth Vader in the original trilogy, and how he sounded with the mask on set. You can find footage of it.
@willbeonekenobi6 ай бұрын
Just a little bit of extra trivia, the shot of the escape pod leaving is actually the very first shot that was completed by ILM but George had rejected it and then they had redone it. It's the redo that is in Star Wars.

My 2 little favorite bits that often get overlooked: 1. When asking, "How many assholes we got on this ship?" The only one who doesn't stand is the guy who replaced the guy who got Schwartz'd in the balls. 2. SPACEBALLS !!! One of the top funniest movies Mel Brooks created, so lets go to Ludicrous Speed with fun facts: - This was originally going to be called “The Planet Moron” - The studio wanted Tom Hanks or Tom Cruise to play the role of Lone Starr which Bill Pullman ironically never saw Star Wars before making the movie - While the movie made a huge joke about merchandising it funny when Mel Brooks ask if he can do a parody of Star Wars to George Lucas he said yes but that they can’t do any merchandising - The man making of those noises is Michael Winslow famous for the Police Academy franchise & is just one of my favorite scenes in the movie - The black man with the comb (first funny scene) who said “We ain’t found Shit !” Is Tim Russ who would later play Tuvok in Star Trek plus Rob Paulsen was in that scene as well - At the ending was an Alien parody scene of the chest bursting which funny is that they got John Hurt to be in this scene because he was in the original movie which is why he says “Not Again” - There was a animated series which was not that good

So you mentioned that film quality "wasn't as good back then", but that's actually a misconception. 35mm film stock has roughly the same clarity today as it did when it first came out. What made them look bad was that home releases were limited to things like VHS, or standard definition broadcast signals. In these modern releases, they simply go back and re-scan the original film reels, but instead of transferring it to something like VHS, transfer it to a digital file that can store a lot more quality.

The reason the films look so good is because the camera qualities are ALWAYS ahead of the technology for our ability to store media in a transferable format. So the old 35mm film roughly had a digital resolution equivalent to approximately 5.6K - a digital image size of about 5,600 × 3,620 pixels. Hence why it is so transferrable now to Blu-ray.

Most prominent facts about the movie.) Spaceballs got George Lucas's approval for it so long as two things didn't happen. 1. No merch for the movie (which explains the merchandising scene). and 2. that Han Solo's counterpart couldn't be dressed like him, so they made their "Solo" dress at Indiana Jones. George Lucas likes the parody so good that he allowed them the same VFX Team and Set from Star Wars at the time.

25:52 Actual celluloid film was always in High Definition, it's the screens and data storage that couldn't keep up. After all, it still needed to look good when projected on a big-ass screen with what's basically a big-ass lamp and a magnifying glass.

Tim Russ was in several shows and a few movies and was even one of the leads on Star Trek: Voyager for its 7 season run (170 episodes), and yet he finds it so funny that there are people who know him best for 4 words spoken in a Star Wars parody: "We ain't found sh*t!"

If I’m recalling correctly The movie was allowed to use Lucas film’s / ILM’s sound effect library as long as they didn’t make any merchandise of the film. So they decided as a joke to have a bunch of fake merch in movie you can’t buy in real life

I'm sure it's been mentioned in the comments somewhere; the xenomorph scene in the diner has the actual actor from Alien reprising his role. That's why he said "not again" lol.
