The merchandising joke was because Brooks actually asked Lucas for permission to do a parody (technically he didn't have to, parody is protected.) Lucas said yes, as long as he didn't do any merchandising that might cut into star wars merchandising.

@@burningfox4974the escape pod footage from the climax of the movie is actual, unused footage from the OT. Lucas _loved_ the idea, even the merchandising restrictions were as much the demands of the Schwartz toy company that handled Star Wars toys.

In 1986, the year before "Spaceballs" was released, was the cult classic and infamous flop "Howard the Duck", the first ever live-action movie based on a Marvel property (thus making it the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe). 25:53 actual film has effectively INFINITE resolution, it captures actual light on what is effectively a 1 to 1 scale, your only limitation at that point is what to display it on. Old box TVs couldn't display the entire resolution of film, that was why _theaters_ gained their reputation as the go to for watching movies, a large canvas to project light onto was the only way to truly see the full quality of a movie. The advent of digital video and film upturned all this, it basically set back film quality by several decades, and it's been playing gradual catch-up to what film could already do ever since. The old movie theater experience your grandparents and great-grandparents knew had several times the visual quality of almost every TV or screen you've ever had.
@promontorium

1 to 1? You mean photon to photon? Film has a resolution limit, it's the size of the halide crystals, and probably the dead space between has an effect.
@JETZcorp
@JETZcorp 4 ай бұрын
A 4k scan is what you need to pull all the detail out of a 35mm film negative, which was the standard for professional cinema and full-frame photo cameras. But that's to accurately capture the grain structure - native 4k digital is more detailed than 35mm, assuming professional quality equipment. Digital still hasn't caught up to IMAX. Scans could be made, but they don't have cameras to capture that kind of resolution, and editing with those files would be the devil's own job.

My 2 little favorite bits that often get overlooked: 1. When asking, "How many assholes we got on this ship?" The only one who doesn't stand is the guy who replaced the guy who got Schwartz'd in the balls. 2. SPACEBALLS !!! One of the top funniest movies Mel Brooks created, so lets go to Ludicrous Speed with fun facts: - This was originally going to be called “The Planet Moron” - The studio wanted Tom Hanks or Tom Cruise to play the role of Lone Starr which Bill Pullman ironically never saw Star Wars before making the movie - While the movie made a huge joke about merchandising it funny when Mel Brooks ask if he can do a parody of Star Wars to George Lucas he said yes but that they can’t do any merchandising - The man making of those noises is Michael Winslow famous for the Police Academy franchise & is just one of my favorite scenes in the movie - The black man with the comb (first funny scene) who said “We ain’t found Shit !” Is Tim Russ who would later play Tuvok in Star Trek plus Rob Paulsen was in that scene as well - At the ending was an Alien parody scene of the chest bursting which funny is that they got John Hurt to be in this scene because he was in the original movie which is why he says “Not Again” - There was a animated series which was not that good

One of my all time favourite movies! Rick Moranis ended up costing Mel Brooks "a lot" of money, since the crew (including Brooks) couldn't help but laugh during his scenes, most notably when he first appears on screen and has breathing problems. George Lucas lended the services of his company ILM to shoot some scenes. The escape pod dropping out was actually a (once) deleted scene from A New Hope. He agreed to let Brooks make the movie on the condition that he couldn't make merchandise, hence the running gag throughout the movie. And he didn't want Lone Star to dress like Han, so Brooks chose to dress him like Indiana Jones. Rick Moranis improvised the entire scene where he plays with his dolls, he was sick and had a fever that day and still came up with one of the best scenes. The original title was Planet Moron. Brooks had a bad reaction to the Yogurt make up and got a bad rash around his eyes. The voice Dark Helmet has when his... dark helmet visor is down is inspired by David Prose, the physical actor for Darth Vader in the original trilogy, and how he sounded with the mask on set. You can find footage of it.

So you mentioned that film quality "wasn't as good back then", but that's actually a misconception. 35mm film stock has roughly the same clarity today as it did when it first came out. What made them look bad was that home releases were limited to things like VHS, or standard definition broadcast signals. In these modern releases, they simply go back and re-scan the original film reels, but instead of transferring it to something like VHS, transfer it to a digital file that can store a lot more quality.

The reason the films look so good is because the camera qualities are ALWAYS ahead of the technology for our ability to store media in a transferable format. So the old 35mm film roughly had a digital resolution equivalent to approximately 5.6K - a digital image size of about 5,600 × 3,620 pixels. Hence why it is so transferrable now to Blu-ray.

Fun fact: During the merchandise scene if you look closely at the Spaceballs comic book you can see it's just a Transformers comic with Optimus Prime on the cover. Either this was an intended hint at the later scene we would get with the Spaceballs 1 ship or they just forgot to cover the transformers on it. Considering all the intended nods to other movies and media it could be either.

random science / cinema fact - in the 20th century film was made to capture moving images with silver halide crystals that would chemically react to light as it moved through the camera. digital cameras were created to be less expensive and were used more and more in the later half of the 20th century and early into the 21st century. it took a while but 4k is the closest we've ever come to replicating film quality resolution. that's why digital cinematography from the 80s, 90s to early 00s looks so pixelated. silver halide crystals were essentially 4k resolution and that's why old films shot on film are able to restored in 4k bluray with crystal clear clarity.

On the whole "Old movies on blu ray looks so good!" Thing is film as in the film reels a camera recorded onto was HD quality but the broadcasting equipment it was shown on after was never HD. Projectors were closer to that quality, but not quit. So fast forward to modern Blu ray yes there is "clean up" to be done but if you have masters of the original film and it is kept well. Then you can HD release it. I am horrifically simplifying it but basically old Movie Cameras did record such High quality.

At a comic con I bought a poster someone made of Dark Helmet that had the quote "Evil will always triumph because good is dumb." The whole sequence will the dolls was improvised by Rick Moranis. Mel Brooks came up with the idea of something like it while filming and he gave the figures to Rick and told him to do whatever he wanted. There was a cameo of the Millennium Falcon at the diner. Also Mel Brooks has discussed on and off about the possibility of a sequel for years but never committed to doing one...until earlier this month! There was an announcement that Spaceballs 2 was in development by Amazon with Josh Gad set to star and help produce alongside Mel Brooks. So hopefully it will be decent (and hopefully it will indeed be called "The Search for more Money").

In the documentary that covers Mel Brooks' life and his works, which covers it chronologically, when it came to Spaceballs, Mel said that not only was it his first movie based on sci-fi, even with its focus on Star Wars (technically, Frankenstein is sci-fi, but not too many people outside of literary snobs recognize it as such), but it was the first movie he made that did not receive rave reviews from critics. At first, he was concerned that he did not quite get it right with sci-fi. Before long, though, he was having dinner at a friend's place, and his friend's little kid was already perfectly quoting the movie. From that dinner experience, he figured that he had simply tapped into a different audience with the movie and took that as a success.
