This episode got me crying. I have a son with a rare genetic condition, and when your child can't communicate like other children, it really is a struggle. My son uses Makaton and has a podd book. He understands everything but struggles to communicate through speech. I am so glad they did a whole episode to bring awareness.

@@TouchyReactions I'm on the spectrum myself, but high functioning, as is my partner. Neither of us knew until after our children were diagnosed, because frankly due to a lack of awareness it just wasn't that likely to get picked up if you were high functioning in the 90s. You'd more likely just be labeled as a difficult or naughty child who needed more discipline and that was that. Autism is hereditary, so both of us being on the spectrum is why we've ended up with 3 autistic children. It is what it is and we wouldn't change them

About the seemingly huge increase in autism: There are not more cases of autism. The difference is that there has been a huge increase in the DIAGNOSIS of autism. When I was a kid, kids who would be diagnosed with autism these days, were called simple, or retarded, or odd, or the village idiot, or have 'learning difficulties', or 'backwards', or any number of terms to cover non-specific neuro-divergence. luckily, we have moved on from those days, but the question 'why has autism increased so much?' is misleading, and based on a false premise. You could just as easily ask ''why are working class kids getting autism when it used to only affect well-off families?'. The answer is simply that back in the day, no one cared about working class kids with learning problems enough to give their condition a name.
