Saturn is seen as a symbol of rebirth in astrology. Every 28 years ,I believe. When Saturn rises again in your house or astrological sign or constellation you have a choice to be reborn per sa and start anew. And the 1 the 10 refers to alchemy. Where the value for lead is 1 and gold is 10. Thus turn these leaded grudges into gold.

Saturn coming back around is basically coming of age and making the decision to grow and let go of the grudge or hold onto it and let it drag you down. Choose 1 or 10 is a Kabbalah reference, choosing the highest (1) or lowest (10) state of enlightenment.

For me, “Choose 1 or 10” is either choose the polar options on a scale of one to ten like you discussed, or it drives home the metaphor they repeat in the second half: a binary choice, one or two. Let go or be dragged down. In binary, the numeric representation of one and two is 01 and 10, respectively. Many of TOOL’s lyrics employ double entendres, homophones, and other literary devices that give the listener a choice in how to perceive the art. You’ll find many fans of their music have vastly different interpretations or takeaways from their songs. The band themselves have stated they prefer to create art that’s less definitive, less ‘just-so’ for the express reason that no two people will have the same reaction. It’s this or it’s that, it’s one or ten - at a certain point it’s healthier to ask yourself is it worth dying on this hill or letting go and moving on.

Here’s what I understand about “the one the ten”: It could be a reference to the 10 Sefirot upon the Kabbalah Tree of Life (a branch of mystical Judaism) Each Sefirot has its own distinct energetic profile or spiritual concept. The first one is sorta formless and unification personified. The 10th is known as “the kingdom”, or the physical manifestation of the combination of all 10 Sefirot’s conditions. My take: Maynard is saying the result of your grudges will be a constrictive, ultra-controlling life. The momentum of bitterness will drag a person down as they clutch it as the cornerstone of their identity. It’s not until someone lets go that they get to re-experience the fresh mind of a child which holds no grudges. I’ve had more than a few personal breakthroughs from this track alone. It’s a combination of Maynard’s seething emotion and the primitive percussion/bass. The whole track is just 🤌 Thanks for sharing your first listen with us!

No, no, no. I mean yes lead and gold are dense heavy metals but the lyrics are alluding to ALCHEMY. For centuries, mankind sought to turn lead into gold (thats hinted at elsewhere in the lyrics) and thats what you do when you hang onto a grudge. Equally as pointless.
