I've spent... two decades (geez) listening to and analysing Tool, but what i still don't understand is how they have such an impossibly high level of production while at the same time sounding under produced. It's just a rock band, it's just a singer, two guitars and drums and while there's effects and layers inserted it's really simple stuff, we're blown away by the complexity of the songs but it doesn't feel like it was scaled up in any way by the production. All i can ever say about it is "some very clever and conscious people worked on this", nobody added something unnecessary, nobody ruined the mix, it's beautiful in its simplicity.

@@rockstardeath8558 I think it's an analog tape machine starting up. Given what Danny Carey has said what the drum solo is laid over in Faaip de Oiad, it kind of bookends the album in a neat way. For those who don't know, in a 2001 issue of Modern Drummer magazine Danny Carey gave an answer to a question about the final track on Lateralus, "Faaip de Oiad", explaining that it was a "tape machine going down the tubes". If I understand correctly, he decided to press record, and it captured the sound of the end of the machine's life. Over which he played a drum solo, and overdubbed the Art Bell radio show excerpt of a guy who claimed to have worked in or around Area 51.

I always interpreted "the scream" as representative of the pain and difficulty of letting go. It's necessary and worth it in the end, but painful during the process because of our resistance to letting things go. Fun fact: Maynard uses a lot of distortion when performing this live... he said if he always performed that scream and the song Ticks and Leeches the way he did in studio, he would destroy his singing voice while touring. Fair point haha. For further recommendations, two of their most popular songs, Stinkfist and Schism, are not only rock bangers, the lyrical metaphors are pretty incredible as well. "Let the ocean take" exposes an optimistic truth that forgiveness is something that requires very little to no effort. To forgive is to GIVE IN to your inner most primal urges because we are naturally compassionate emotional beings. Holding a grudge is hard stressful work that yields NO reward. Danny is of the only drummers (certainly in rock) to not use the snare wires. Most would consider it not powerful enough for rock but from years of doing that he has found a very unique tone in this genre. Fun fact: Most rock records in the last 20+ years A) either merge or replace the snare and kick with samples for more consistency and control, but at the same robbing them of the 100s of possible tones a well played drum is capable of. And B) track all the musicians to a click track (metronome) so that they don't deviate from tempo. Tool do neither of these so the full range of expression is possible. Most bands actually sound terrible without the studio aids and usually carry them live too, but Tool are plenty good enough to perform 'raw' and pull it off. And all the better for it.

It only gets better and never gets old. So much to love about Tool. Maynard's lyrics, his vocals, Danny's ability to make the drums not just keep the rhythm but become a focus of the music, Adam's textual guitar, Justin's bass no words can express. I'm 50 and Tool had been THE BAND for 29 of those years. The Grudge, for me, reminds me of one of my favorite Buddhist quotes..."Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else's; you are the one who gets burned."...Let go of negative energy and grudges or like a stone it will Dead you to the bottom. And as we know from Tool...."Shit adds up at the bottom."

What I know of the snare sound... others may have more accurate information... for most of the song the snare wires on the underside of the snare are not engaged (meaning the wires are not contacting the bottom head and not affecting the sound). This gives the snare more of a high-pitched tom sound with more resonance. Then, the part where you really picked up on the "juicy" snare sound, he does have the snare wires engaged. Nice dynamic change to add to the intensity. I think he also was using a deep brass snare on this one. Not sure the dimensions, but likely at least 6" or 8" deep (4.5" - 5" is "typical" snare depth). Also not sure if he was using the shells made out of melted down paiste cymbals here. That kit was/ is a beast.

If you wanna hear Maynard putting some REAL grit to his voice, listen to Ticks & Leeches. Quite easily the heaviest song the band's ever made. The way I hear it, they were being pressured into doing something "heavier" since the album (Lateralus) was too "soft". They delivered - but they also stuck like two minutes of soft instrumentals smack in the middle to make it as radio un-friendly as humaly possible xD

I love watching reactors falling in love with Tool. It happens like 100% of the time. 🖤 You should check out Pushit, both studio and the live version. They did 2 totally different renditions of the same song, (both are captivating) An unrelated suggestion would be Radiohead, just as a contradiction from your heavier stuff, & since your a vocalist. Keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to seeing your channel grow!🖤

You might be one of the best and most insightful of the music reaction channels. I'm thinking about my favorite songs in a slightly new light thanks to you. And it's awesome to share the experience. Keep up the great work! Thank you!

Ahhh! The power of music to, like a wormhole, transport you back in time to re-experience memories in vivid ways.

My number 1 band. Heard Sober back in the early ‘90s and have been hooked ever since. They can lift you up, punch you in the chest, and then set you back down. Close your eyes and enjoy the ride. 😎

Your comment about where Maynard sits in the mix is spot on. The whole album is a masterpiece of mixing. Its what I hold all other albums to when it comes to heavier music.

Your reactions are becoming my favorite on KZbin overall. Thank you for all the Tool reactions, too, because it's amazing to see someone discover something I've loved for 20 years. Spiral out.

I love Opiate, Undertow, Ænima, and 10,000 Days, but Lateralus is by far their best album. It's perfect. The song Lateralus is one of the greatest songs ever written. Yes, I left out Fear Inoculum. It's good, but not great. I feel like it's leftover tracks that were too long for 10,000 Days. Anywho, keep up the great reactions. Enjoying riding along on your TOOL journey!

The scream live is a bit shorter now than 20 years ago, but still powerful as everything they do.

The reason why Danny's snare sounds like that is because he usually plays it without the actual snares engaged. So the snare lever is in the OFF position. This gives this drum then a sort of tribal sounding tom tom like sound to it; especially with his EVANS coated head. Danny's snare is also 8" deep by 14" in diameter tuned to a fairly high pitch. These things all contribute to the uniqueness of his snare sound. I absolutely love it!!! Best snare drum sound EVER!!!

Everyone loved the 25 second scream, I saw them in Feb and they played this, Maynard still could scream a strong 13 second one.

At the final crescendo I saw a spark of infatuation, possibly bordering on true love in your eyes... don't be afraid though, this is a normal reaction for the awakened soul.

thank you for your heartfelt comments and analysis... I have no words to discribe howmuch tool touches me to the core... being not an 'average' person myself, I too have had my fair share of bias and judgemental dumbness.... keep it up!!! greetz from Belgium

Danny has the snare off. He has the snare off in a majority of tool songs. Most people don’t realize this or even know what that means. I think it’s a kind of like a signature.
