This did more to show how stupid racism really is than any guilt trip devised for that purpose. Mel Brooks is a genius at comedy. You should watch the full uncut version of the original film. The newer versions has the dialog so cut up and censored that it looses all it's meaning

Blazing Saddles is still one of the BEST satires to deal with the issue of racism. From start to finish, the entire film completely OBLITERATES what it means to be racist simply by presenting all the racist people as fools and corrupted, while those who aren't racist, or of that race itself, are the most competent and honorable people in the film. Just that SIMPLE approach to the issue completely exposes the stupidity of promoting racism, and the ignorance of BEING racist in general.

Ya have to see the whole movie. This is classic Mel Brooks. Taking on social issues such as prejudice, racism and bigotry using satire and parody. The role of the sheriff (here played by the very talented late Cleavon Little) was originally supposed to be played by Richard Pryor but the studio balked given that Pryor could be controversial and somewhat unreliable due to his drug use so they forced Mel Booked to recast. Pryor would go on to later team up with Gene Willder, who also had a starring role in Blazing Saddles in classics Silver Streak and Stir Crazy. They had marvelous chemistry together. You also should watch the hilarious Mel Brooks classic, History of the World with the always excellent Gregory Hines.

As others have said. You really need to see this whole movie to get the full context. It is brilliant. Also... When it came to the use of the N-word on set... Some actors mentioned how uncomfortable they were using it. The actor playing the Sherriff knew just how important the movie was and told them it was alright, he knew it was all for the movie, but if they used it anywhere else, there would be problems.

This is a Mel Brooks film, and his style of comedy. Richard Pryor helped write the script. Brooks is Jewish and the whole film makes fun of racism and bigotry in all forms. White people, black people, Indians, the Irish, Jews, stupid people, you name it. The film is so politically incorrect that a modern leftist would have a coronary if they watched it. You couldn't make this film today. Please watch the whole unedited film. Many versions have been chopped up to make it more PC. This film is a national treasure.

Racism was not just used on African Americans. Here is a true story that my dad told me years ago. My father was born in Elmira NY in 1927. Understand there were very few African Americans in upstate NY at that time. My hole family is Irish catholic. When my dad was 7 years old, he saw his father standing out in the street watching the KKK burning a cross in the distance. My dad said dad why are they doing that. My grandfather said " because they don't like the Irish catholic!!! " my brother has a old sign hanging in his kitchen that reads " help wanted Irish need not apply "! I tell you this because in the movie there is a line in this movie that you can hear that state's " Ok, we will take the Nigers and the Chinks, but not the Irish "!!! Just food for thought!

Oh please watch it! I miss the times when racism was treated as it should be, as moronic. Mel Brooks is a legend of comedy i emplore you to enjoy his films. Also Gene Wilder (willy wonka) is in Blazing Saddles as his deputy. Comedy Gold. If this one is heavy you could watch "The Producers" (the old one not rhe remake) to get a small feel for the dramatics and slap sticks, but Blazing Saddles is one of my all time favorites. Laughs all the way through and using racism to make fun of racism was genius.

It was a beautiful condemnation of racism by showing how stupid racists are. Brooks was a Jewish comedian who was young when the Holocaust happened,he hates racial prejudice .
