Carly Simon is the daughter of Richard Simon, co-founder of the publishing firm: Simon and Shuster. Her mother was Andrea Louise Heinemann Schuster who was bi-racial (Jewish and Black) who was a civil rights advocate as well as an Opera singer. So your imagining that she resembled Halle Berry wasn't that far fetched. I grew up in the sixties and so I heard this song on the radio when it first came out. There was so much good music from different genres and when this song played it made me sit up and take notice. Someone different with a deep message to ponder. This song captures the traditional path for young adults of our era being challenged by the ideas and influences of the "hippie" movement. That being to question authority and ask "why" are we supposed to do it "this way?" Carly grew up in a very privileged life style on Long Island. She's brilliant, poetic and beautiful.

Carly Simon and James Taylor were married but eventually split, due in large part to his struggle with a serious addiction to heroin. It was a beautiful pairing and a heartbreaking split. Very well said. I think James has always felt like she should have stayed with him and helped him through his addiction and recovery... and on the flip side, I believe that Carly felt that if he truly loved her, he would have fought harder to get clean. I'm not saying that either one of them was right or wrong. Only they know the struggle and how each of them handled it. To this day, she says that she'll always love him, in her heart of hearts, but he hasn't spoken to her since the split. They really were an incredible duo and it seemed like they were truly meant to be together. It's such a shame that it didn't work out in the end. That performance of Mockingbird will always be one of my all-time favorites.

A journalist/screenwriter named Jacob Brackman wrote the lyrics. He and Simon met when they were counselors at a summer camp in 1967; they wrote several songs together, including "Haven't Got Time For the Pain," "Attitude Dancing," and "All I Want Is You." Simon cites Brackman as a major influence in her development as a songwriter; she was amazed at his ability to fit lyrics to a melody without using clichés.

Yes, Carly Simon wrote this song at a time in the 1960s and 70s where women had fewer choices and marriage could become construed as a cage. Women could not get a credit card in their own name. They could get fired for getting pregnant, they could not take legal action against workplace sexual harassment, they paid more in health insurance etc. The pressure to get married then was enormous and any profession were women were allowed to enter was presumed to be something she did until such time as she got married. So a bit more going on in this song than just the love aspect.

In 1971 it was the status quo to marry in your very early twenties-- not a lot of life between your parents home and the marital home. Sometimes, often even, straight from one to the other. Living together, or "shacking up", was simply not done, you got married first-- a massive shift made rather quickly in the early seventies. Ultimately, this is a song reflecting the sexual revolution started in the late 60's-- the women's movement (education, career, independence) was just getting a foothold. ✌

The significant line is "their children hate them for the things their not, they hate themselves for what they are". Showing the generational gap which has children imagining themselves righteous judges. with little experience, and the adults having experienced enough to feel overly guilty for flaws that are inherent in humans. Those same children will then grow up to realize that over the course of time, they themselves will have done things that they cannot change, and also bear the weight of responsibility for their actions. The cycle goes on. Knowledge without Wisdom is dangerous.

This song is from her 1st album released in 1971. Still establishing her career, leading an independent life. Don't hear it as cynical or sarcastic, but soul searching working out the complexities of the changes of becoming an adult facing new stages of life. of By 1974 she was married to James Taylor and a new mother. She released the album Hotcakes. The tone is so different, more settled, focused on her true love and more domesticated - for example, Mind on My Man, Safe and Sound, and Forever My Love. Carly's musical arc spanned several decades, all documenting her evolution through her life stages and changes. Always brilliant in expressing her thoughts.
