Lots of guys in the 80s would wear make-up when clubbing. It wasn't a big deal at all. My next door neighbor, a straight male, would regularily ask me to do his black eyeliner when he was going out dancing and to pick up on chicks. Totally acceptable. Men and women both had "big hair." It was just a fashion trend. Glam Rock. New Wave. It was a theatrical look.

He had a botched rhinoplasty. A botched lip augmentation led to an infection in his lips caused by the injectable fillers. Infection spread to the rest of his face creating severe damage. Related health problems lead to pulmonary embolisms and blood clots & kidney ailments. He passed in October 2016 (aged 57). Even though they were rivals, Boy George paid for his funeral. Pete Burns, the lead singer, is sadly no longer with us. He was from Liverpool. I believe he had gender and or body dysmorphia as later in life he took steps to change his appearance to more feminine. Regardless he had an incredible voice and this song is a banger. ❤

Pete Burns was an icon in Liverpool in the late 1970's early 80's, he worked in a record shop called PROBE. Pete had this style back in 1978 the way he dressed in all black and looked with his black contact lenses was totally unique and copied by Boy George which become the source of rivalry between them! His first ban The Mystery Girls then become Dead or Alive. Pete was married to Lynne and later had a civil partnership/husband. Pete was a big guy and good luck to anyone who tried to insult him. Pete Burns and his unique style was around for years before Culture Club and Boy George hit the scene! He was an icon and a real character on the Punk/New Wave scene in the late 70's early 80's. R.I.P to Pete Burns a talent who had his style, look and thunder copied!

Try to remember that people his age grew up in the era when all toys for girls were pink. Powerpuff girls era. DIsney princesses. Hell I remember a year in the 1990s where I couldn't find women's running shoes that weren't pink. Really annoying. I think people raised in the 1960s and 1970s were subject to less gender rigidity than then or now, with less assumption that slight divergences like women with short hair or men with makeup = gay or trans. This was a huge success at the time and no serious 80's playlist can be legit without "You spin me round (like a record). The sound immediately reminds me of London's dance clubs in the mid-eighties and bears the trademark of the infamous trio of producers Stock, Aitken and Waterman who had the monopoly of the British pop charts in the late eighties. Besides Dead or Alive, other protegees include Rick Astley, Bananarama, Kylie Minogue, Mel and Kim and many others. They discovered this tricky synth and electronic drum loops formula that made every song a hit: "Never give you up", "Venus", "I should be so lucky"... From 1985 to 1990 they produced eight UK N.1 singles and 3 US N.1 singles. The Dead or Alive lead singer is called Pete Burns and he was all a character back in the day but also in later years he wasn't joking. He sadly developed an addiction to cosmetic surgery and he stated he had over 300 surgeries. And yes, he's gay..."like happy!" (citation needed).

The story in short: the band have been struggling so long, they decided revamp their sound and get the Stock-Aitken-Waterman workshop to do a Hi-NRG makeover for their fresh songs. It was quite a "hard labour" (they made 5 different mixes only for this one), almost escalated into violence, but when they completed You Spin Me Round (the Murder Mix we hear here was the winner) and it started to circulating in the clubs and radio, everyone felt it would be a hit (this started the SAW trio's fame which would hold on to early '90s), even the record company and wanted it to have a video ASAP to show in the number one British TV music shows, in Top of The Pops above all (we're still before the start of MTV Europe). The problem: the time and budget was too tight so the band could rent the studio for an afternoon only and they could use only those props they found there or brought by themselves. The rest is history 🙂

Glam rock goes back into the late 60s and early 70s with TRex and other pro formers, including David Bowie. It was a strong influence on some New Wave and “hair rock”. A lot of them originated in England, though some Americans took it up. If I’m not mistaken it’s one of the reasons Kiss put in their makeup.

Dead or Alive was one of my FAVORITE bands in my teen years. I have seen them in concert multiple times and enjoyed their CDs and live performances. This is quintessentially 1980's music for me.....dance clubs, concerts, parties, etc. Thank you for your review and critique of this song.

It looked silly to me. A lot of the crappy synth pop dreck of the 80s looked and sounded silly. It's a genre not to be very proud of. It just showed how great the 70s was.

A JAM! This song just pumps. Dance clubs were filled when this song comes out. In the 80's androgyny was really common. So many artists/bands glammed it up to cross over the look b/w male & female. Even rock bands like Poison, Motley Crue and others looked like woman early on. For this group, Pete Burns was the real deal. He wasn't just using it as marketing. He was a guy that eventually had surgery to look more and more female. But the dude had a voice! The song did get a second life when it was used in the movie "The Wedding Singer", which was hysterical. Also check out their other hit - "Brand New Lover"

Your getting dragged because as an American you haven't had the musical education in British music that has a lot of genres that Americans didn't experience at the time. This band was part of The New Romantic Period along with bands like Spandau Ballet , Ultra Vox ect . This was a reaction to Punk and the far right politics of Margret Thatchers Conservative Party .

In America it was just part of the 2nd British Invasion.... it was odd, stranger, videos clearly visually wild then and also today... yet it got bought, promoted because of the music and most did not push that narrative that would cancel it today. We already had Disco cancelled for its roots and similar community that grew it.... so this had its door opened in the 80s..... and diversity in the Rock era continued even in the Brits in these genres had hits.... Boy George had a few hits... others less outward visually very different.... We look at the outfits and looks of our Big Hair bands even home-grown and they could and did ware outfits seen as flamboyant today. All was seen as their CONCERT OUTFITS vs daily worn on streets, or all had big permed hair on white dudes. The music also had a bit of a revival with Lady Gaga into pop again in the 2000s and then powers in the industry so consolidated it that they controlled what we hear.... powers-that-be chose the Rock Era was to end... fed us half 2010s rock... sort of and rap/hip hop.... till they chose to have all of top 20 basically rap/hip hop songs and promoting non-white groups and singers was very quick.... it even fed into our political aspects today... all too quick a push.... thru today into Country music new artist sounding more like those others with intense auto-tune sounding voices that some see as perverting that genre.

What the hell does being an American have to do with it?!? I'm an American and was very well aware of this song and all the other popular music coming out of the UK and elsewhere at the time. He's getting dragged by people who are too lazy and/or ignorant to listen and comprehend what he has said multiple times about himself and his upbringing. @@becomethestar Apparently also... that comment person does not realize that this is also a DISCO/TECHNO labeled song of 84 and hit #11 in the US in 85. DISCO IS AMERICAN IN ORIGIN FULLY. There is a Disco ball in the video also. So it makes little sense to deny AMERICAN MUSICAL INFLUENCE basically in most British music. Even the Beatles credited American music from Rockabilly of Elvis, Motown, Blues etc. with inspiration for them and they also did songs as them. It is the references in the video and look and fashions etc. that was questionable then and even today would be.... not about the music that was at the very tail end and post Disco Era... yet its influence continued as we hear here and into House music and the robotic beat of Techno added. Even in 85... MTV was still young and not even in Europe yet that came late 80s. I know I in the mid-80s still did not view it though we had cable being rural..... So this video meant nothing to many who never saw it till later anyway. The SONG and MUSIC CARRIED ITSELF and was not about how EDUCATED Americans were on BRITISH MUSIC.... How about how educated that person that commented on Americans was on American musical INFLUENCE including here???

This was 1985, New Wave music was the rave and this was the style. People wore long sleeve satin tops with broaches at the neck, and the higher you got your hair the better! Clubs were all about dancing and having a great time, it was awesome!! 🤩

Back growing up in the 60's, 70's and 80's most guys had long hair! They looked Hot, even if they weren't that good looking in the face......but the Rock Stars had Tons of Fans!! See (Bon Jovi, Europe!!) Back then it was Cool to have hair to your shoulders or longer, the guys that had really short hair were the Nerds and Geeks that no one hung out with and the girls didn't want.

According to Pete in an interview, the eyepatch at one point was used to distract from the fact that part of his nose was caving in from a botched rhinoplasty early in his career. He was on his third nose at least by the time “You Spin Me” was released.
