I think a main point that western audiences miss out on when watching indian movies like these is how important parents consider education to be for their kids. In an emerging economy like India's, most of the time the only way out of poverty or to escape the "middle class" is through education, or a technical degree or qualification and not based on connections or family businesses. And what jobs pay the most, well in the minds of an indian parent, they are either doctor or a software engineer. Hence this much importance of making their son/daughter an engineer or doctor.

Exactly. Except I would change 'Indian' for 'Asian.' A high pressure environment is unfortunately widespread throughout almost all Asian cultures. This movie shined a spotlight on that phenomenon.

Well software engineering is actually a good career path. But it highly depends on one's interest. As someone who is a software developer without a degree, I have found that I am able to excel in software development because it is something I genuinely enjoy and do not find difficult. On the other hand there are people in my company who have graduated with degrees in software engineering but struggle to solve problems and build logic. This is mostly because of the fact that they entered the field just to get a high-paying job or due to parental pressure rather than a genuine interest in software development.

Being an engineer myself. I can say that this movie is pretty much the closest to the reality of higher education scene in India. I enjoyed the hell out of my 4 years of graduation. The Hostel life with boys, the campus fuck-ups, getting drunk, bunking classes. But eventually each and every student of my batch has achieved something in there lives. Not all of them are core engineers now, some are Indian Civil services officers, some are musicians, photographers, tattoo Artists, freelancers, gamers and much more. I am glad that you got a peek into our lives as a Indian engineering student. Thank you Badd Medicine💕🫂

Taare Zameen Par and 3 Idiots define education system and family dynamics so brilliantly in Asia. Asian parents are mostly very conservative, they want to escape their own miseries and only seek perfection. The best way out of all this is through higher education and you can’t come less than A+. The pressure is really high in Asian students that’s why there’s so much tension and many students ends up committing suicide to escape. Let’s not forget the bigoted system where you have to only remember the exact definition from books instead of understanding things clearly. These movies really changed the mindset of people and the education system in general.

I cried so hard at the "Dad will never agree" part because this is (or was) the reality of so many students in India and southeast Asia. Being a developing country that got out of a 200 year oppression which left it in ruins, education is seen (rightly so) as the means to break that circle of poverty. For a long time, only engineering or the medical field were seen as the only two viable options to pursue to have a good career. No one cared about the students' passions (as Farhan's here). This caused so much pressure on the students, and led to so many student suicides (as u saw in the movie twice). I myself was forced to study science coz what else are you gonna do? As the dialogue says, parents did not use to understand that their children could have other aptitudes or passions other than science. I'm lucky that I'm finally getting to do what I've always wanted to do, but there are still many students (especially in the poorer regions of the country) that don't get that option. Poverty and parents and society expectations are the reasons. However, the situation is much better than it was a decade ago, and this movie has played a huge role in that. It had the biggest cultural impact and has literally changed the lives of many students and the views of the people in India. It made people realise that engineering and medical weren't the only two options in the world. It helped change the country. Truly an amazing and necessary film.

Regarding what you said about following passion, I think the movie does not said that and tackle engineers also as necessity because only one of the three follow their passion outside of the engineering field, the photographer, Farhan. Rancho was never about money because he was sponsored but Raju chose to work in engineer because he needs it. Silencer also shown in the movie as successful man, he gets a good life that he wanted from the beginning. It's more about knowing yourself and how to learn to get more of the subject/knowledge than just following the book. It's about critical thinking in the centre and pressure to become the best is about how to be the best version of yourself. It's not about following your passion blindly, it's about pursuing excellent but it's also fine if you aren't the best of the best, you can always get what you want when you do your best. The movie started with the idea of competition and then develop into competing and crushing other, having one way to success but it doesn't mean that your success is always based on other's validation or following exactly what everybody did, it's fine when you aren't being the top of the top as long as you are content and at ease with your heart. Even the antagonist of the story like Suhaz, Silencer, Virus is also shown as successful in the eye of society and also by their own standard.

I think there’s a misunderstanding, the movie isn’t saying forget about education, rather it’s saying be courageous in discovering and pursuing what YOU’RE talented at. It’s not to throw away your career, just don’t accept a life someone dictates for you when you have a clear talent because being true to yourself will keep you happy and allow you to contribute to society more meaningfully. Just like how our genius inventor was sharing the blog posts and photography with his students.

Yesss I'm glad you're watching more Indian movies as a fan of Indian cinema myself! I wish Oak had seen this one too though as I think he would have enjoyed the messages 🙂 It's cute to see Answer do his research 😊 Indeed Aamir is one of the biggest names in Bollywood. He's one of the "3 Khans" (Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan) who have been 3 biggest Bollywood stars since the early 90s. Funnily enough they share the same family name and were born the same year but are unrelated. Shah Rukh is the biggest star out of the 3. Kareena is a wonderful actress. She comes from an illustrious family of actors going back to her grandpa Raj wjo was the biggest actor/director in Bollywood in the 60s and her great grandpa Prithviraj, also a renowned actor. I hope you guys can watch at least 1 or 2 Indian movies every month, there is SO MUCH great stuff to discover! Here a bunch of suggestions (these are all popular movies that got good reviews): *My Name Is Khan* (2010) drama set in the US. So that you get to discover Shah Rukh Khan now that you know Aamir. Also with Kajol, one of the most renowned actresses in Bollywood. Shah Rukh and her did a lot of movies together and are a much loved onscreen couple (and real life friends). *Bajrangi Bhaijaan* (2015) comedy drama with the 3rd Khan, Salman 😊 Also with Kareena. Written by SS Rajamouli's dad, who also wrote RRR and Baahubali! *Dangal* (2016) sports drama based on real events. With Aamir Khan. He went through big body transformations for the role, there is a video called Fat To Fit documenting the process. *Kaithi* (2019) action movie. The director mentioned Die Hard as an inspiration *Vikram* (2022) follow up to Kaithi, not a sequel but rather a spin off. One of my favourites movies of last year. With 3 super famous and super talented actors. You would get a kick out of these movies I'm sure! A 3rd one is planned. *Thallumaala* (2022) my fave movie last year after RRR! Super fun action movie, VERY creative, comic book inspired, amazing soundtrack! *Super Deluxe* (2019) hyperlink dark comedy/thriller, a unique movie, a bit eccentric, lots of fun! Also a great cast including the Queen Mother from Baahubali 😊 *Udta Punjab* thriller/dark comedy about the drug problem in the Punjab region, with Kareena + Alia Bhatt in a stunning performance (she played Sita in RRR and, not exaggerating, she is one of the best actresses in the world right now). Also with 2 male actors you don't know but who are very famous and talented. *Raazi* (2018) spy thriller based on a real story, also a great performance by Alia Bhatt. *Drishyam 1 & 2* I would suggest watching the Malayamam originals but the Hindi remakes may be easier to find. Mystery/thriller but the quiet type that makes you think and trying to guess. *Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara* (2011), fun and fresh road trip/buddy movie with some food for thoughts. *Eega* (2012) another blockbuster by SS Rajamouli 🙂 I would also strongly recommend the Amazon Prime series *The Family Man* , it follows a cop and his team trying to catch terrorists, it's a great show that has become known for featuring amazing long takes. A 3rd season is planned. And if you ever want to do something very out of the box and watch an old classic, I would suggest *Awaara* (1951) with Raj Kapoor and Prithviraj Kapoor (Kareena's grandpa and great grandpa), also directed by Raj. It's a social/crime drama that had big international success. It was nominated for Grand Prize at Cannes Festival. It's a great movie 🙂

Sometimes these issues of engineer, doctor might looks shallow or frivolous, not as deep to non Asians but it's so true. This toxic chokehold and old mindset of "you only have a worthwhile career and life if you're an engineer/doctor" is so HEAVY over countries like India, this movie isn't even an exaggeration. Now that I'm experiencing it myself, I can first hand relate to this. Even my father, a very stoic guy, who's an engineer by education deeply resonates with this film. 44:17 As you said, it's a cultural thing. At a young age, we're taught how to fit in our parents' boxes. We weren't given the freedom to pursue what we want to do. Heck, I didn't even have any preferences (food, clothing, hobbies, etc) until I reached my mid 20s. I was learning things about myself things I should've learned while in my teens or early 20s. Most of my friends are in a similar situation. I don't think anyone will understand how maddening that situation is until you experience it yourself. (And, yes, I have severe depression stuck with a law degree I didn't want). You mentioned that you're going to reach a certain age where you feel like these needs won't be relevant as long as you have your basic meets are met. That's only possible when you have a stable foundation, i.e. yourself. What use are these things when you feel empty yourself? You'll keep hanging on by achieving things that don't matter to you. You'll still be stuck with your family who expects things they want you to do. These expectations won't end once you have a stable job/career. "Well, shouldn't you focus on yourself, then? Shouldn't you not mind their opinions?" It's extremely hard in our culture. That's why I say that having such a tight-knit culture is such a double-edged sword (as do most things). That's why I enjoyed 3 Idiots and Sky Castle (a kdrama) a lot. Because they're questioning the actions of the system and the adults rather than the children.

You can’t really hate any character in this movie even if they are sort of villains. They also somehow depicts real situation, necessity of people. Actually, they are not villains, system is the villains, society is villains, class difference, income difference, lifestyle difference is the villains. Power dynamics of world is villain. Social issues like poverty are villain. We have to fight them The only person I hate in this movie were those who were ragging freshers.

I enjoyed this movie so much when I was a student, and now working as a teacher for half a decade, it hit me harder in a different way. There are students like Rancho, out of the box, never follow rules, some dont pay respect to their teachers and peers. There are terrible teachers out there, but there are also students who need strict disciplines. I had students who were nightmares and drove me to tears most lessons, but later on when they grew up and graduated, they came back and became great ‘friends’ of mine. This movie was so ahead of its time and I believe it will still be in the future. Many details are worth deep digging and discussion. Their meanings and implications bring so much to the movie itself.

Of course the world needs doctors, engineers etc. But when you are asked to follow your passion, those are included. Engineering, medicine, even education itself are passion for some after all. Always enjoyed this movie and your reactions as well. Amir Khan's movie always includes some teachings. Taare zameen par is also one of my favorites. Try it out if you have time please!

For people who don't know, Shimla is kind of a town in foothills of the Himalayan mountains, think Missoula, MT. Definitely not an innovation or tech hub, but it's still possible for someone doing engineering to end up there. Ladakh, at the end of the movie is a barren upland village in the middle of the mountains; think Moab, UT. No one going to a top flight university expects you to end up there.
