I went through that. I had a child who died when I was so young. Her name was Alison. On the anniversary of her birth- I went to go see this movie to try and get my mind off it. THIS movie. Of ALL the movies on this earth. But still…. One of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. And you know I get it- when I first saw it I thought the same. I’d never intentionally put myself through her loss. But now that I’m older, I feel differently. Knowing her, her existence on this earth however short, is one of the great blessings of my lifetime. And now I believe I would’ve made the same decision.

I beleive she already feels what it is to be a mother. She has all the "future memories" of her child. How can she go on living with that memory of that love and NOT have her daughter? It begs the question, is it better to have love then lost, or never to have loved at all? Not an easy choice!

It's cruel. Her daughter had a difficult end, she had cancer and was sick to death: the choice was easy.

It isn't even a choice she can make. That child was born, lived and died already. She couldn't make the choice not to have the Hannah because she already exists. Time is not linear for her.

I think most parents who lost a child would say they would go back in time and do it all over again even if they knew the end result. You don't regret having a child, for her she already had her. Time is mot linear, she has experienced it all at once. I think it bittersweet and absolutely beautiful, heartbreaking, but still beautiful. You would treasure every waking moment including the bad, because it is all a gift!

Loved your reaction, was looking forward to this one; and one of my favourite films of all time. The General's wife’s last words are “In war there are no winners, only widows.”

The alien tells Louise that they will need humanity's help in the future. A) how do they know they will need help in the future? B) how do they know the help must come from humanity? I believe the answer is because that future has already happened. In the movie they make a point of stressing that the language allows the perception of the true nature of time. It is non linear. It does not progr3ss from past to present to future. It's all one time. That's why she can hop around to different points in her life. That's why the aliens know what's going to happen in the future. That's why Louise was able to get information from the General in the future and bring it back to the past. She is not time traveling. She is just switching from different points in her life. All these points are happening at the same time. Think of it like changing channels on a tv. All the programming is going on simultaneously, and you can choose what to see at any given moment. Because of this, I think at the end her 'choice' is how she deals with this. She chooses to embrace it, she even says exactly that. She can't change it. She will always have that daughter and the daughter will always die. That's how I understand it.

I like your understanding of it, I see it differently. I do not see the future as having happened - I see the future she was shown as ONE part of what could happen. That’s why the hepatods came. The future was not looking good for humanity and they needed to change the course of it. If Louise stayed silent to the calling - the war would have happened but she was shown she had a chance to change things and she took that chance. She followed that path. The H kept bombarding her with the positive outlook to give her strength to carry on. They were fighting for their own existence too -in some ways and she was OPEN to their message. I’ve had a vision before and I saw questions that I was hiding to be asked in an interview. The exact 7 questions. I got the job. It hadn’t happened - but if I had refused to attend the interview - would I still have gotten the job? Maybe or No. That’s the thing. If she didn’t act on the vision - the war would have happened. I love this movie.

Bear with me; I have a point: "There is no time." "I used to think this was the beginning of your story. Memory is a strange thing. It doesn't work like I thought it did. We are so bound by time, by its order. But now I am not so sure I believe in beginnings and endings. There are days that define your story beyond your life. Like the day they arrived." "I've been doing a bit of reading about this idea that...What if you immerse yourself into a foreign language...You can actually rewire your brain." The Heptapod Language: "Like their ship or their bodies, their written language has no forward or backward direction. Linguists call this "nonlinear orthography," which raises the question, "Is this how they think?"" "It's not a weapon. It's a gift. The weapon is their language. They gave it all to us."..."If you learn it... really learn it, you get to perceive time the way they do. So you get to see what's to happen. But time, it isn't the same for them. It is not linear." "If you could see your whole life from start to finish, would you change things?"..."I forgot how good it felt to be held by you." What do these quotes really mean? Here's my take on its premise: The Heptapods come here for help, seeding us with this 'special' visual Language. They do this because they will need our help in 3,000 years. Whether the Language will be a necessary skill in support of that help or whether the impact of the Language will be to stabilize our species so our own paranoia doesn't annihilate us or even that the Language prepares us for future events, I don't know. But they come and give it to us. That the Language does not correlate with any auditory language (not even the Heptapods' own spoken language) makes me think the Language may not have even originated with the Heptapods; perhaps they learned it from another race alien to the Heptapods. The Language restructures the brain and changes your perception of time; it changes from linear (past-present-future) to a fixed state experience. What would that mean? What are its boundaries? Look at the structure of the Language itself. If there is no time, but you see all of it at once with no backwards or forwards. Each 'utterance', each communication, is complete in itself; there is a boundary in one's perception of time, which is the lifespan of the individual. You don't see THE future, you see the entirety of your own life, completely. And it's not 'seeing', it's not visionary; you EXPERIENCE/TRANSFER TO whatever moment in your life you move your consciousness to. Physically. If there is no time, if it's a fixed state, then there are no 'beginnings' or 'ends'; it means nothing dies. Hannah still lives, within her 'bubble' of lifespan. It so happens Hannah's lifespan is fully contained within Louise's lifespan. Louise can be with her daughter any time she wants. If time is a fixed state, then all that can be already exists. It means there is no choice; a fixed state is immutable; otherwise, it makes all existence crash and burn. Everything is interrelated, a web or relationships. Change one thing and everything changes. Existence cannot endure optional changes or 'choices' when everything is connected (see 'Butterfly Effect'). So, the Heptapods always came here, are here, had come here; it explains the efficiency of their craft, their sudden appearance, how they seem to just 'dissipate' when they leave, because they just think where next to be. Louise couldn't 'choose' to have her daughter; Hannah always existed. Louise tells Hannah that Hannah is 'unstoppable'; you can't 'stop' a fixed state item or event. This fixed state can't be unidirectional (only future-facing) because it's not linear; it allows movement to any point in a person's lifespan. When Louise tells Ian "I forgot how good it felt to be held by you.", then in our linear time terms she is speaking from a consciousness of the future experiencing a past action. It means you can 'go back'. It means you can 'go to' any point in your existence. The Heptapods aren't psychic; they can't read minds, they can't give us visions, and they can't control our minds. There is no evidence of this. If they could do those things, they would have communicated with us humans in a more detailed and efficient manner. They could have let us clearly know they were no threat to us and intended no harm. Instead, there followed the stumbling translations between different cultures, alien concepts, and working across a language barrier. The title of the film comes, I believe, from a brief moment well into the story: Louise is working on the Language and suddenly enters a short reverie. She sees the book she'll write, she sees the lectures and classes where she teaches the Language, and she pulls out of the reverie stating that she understands it. She returns from the future where she has full knowledge of the Language still retaining the full knowledge of the Language. The is the moment of Arrival, when the Language and its benefits ARRIVE in Louise's mind. This is the moment that humankind changes, that is the seed of world peace and stability. Ian never learned the Language. He does fall in love with Louise, marries her, and has Hannah. And when she tells Ian about Hannah's disease (at the point where she always tells Ian), he can't accept it (it's fixed in time), and he leaves still believing there was a choice involved (as he always does). For Ian, stuck in linear time, Hannah is eventually lost to him; she dies. For Louise, for whom there is no 'time', Hannah is just a thought away, in the next 'room'.

Hun, her daughter died a very painful death, it’s not only about her - did we think about if the daughter would have wanted to come into this world knowing how the exit would be? Also being a parent takes two, it’s not just her decision - she should have been transparent with Ian. He lost a child too - why isn’t anyone talking about that, we are focused on her needs alone. I dunno hun, it’s a difficult one for me to swallow. I could never … Like she could probably heal and move on but Ian was like - are u insane? Did the alien mist make you high? lol. I love this movie. What do you think?

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. I have to disagree. Ian chose to be a distant parent to his daughter because Louise told him the end and this was the wrong choice. She gets the chance to not tell him the second time around and have him experience the positive times with his daughter, not knowing the end, as it should be! Because once you know her you can not dismiss her and say it would be best if she had never been. The end of all life is painful and still we go through it because we believe the joyful moments are worth the pain. If you believed that a painful death devaluates a life no matter how long it lasts, that is defeatist.

this movie always makes me sob whenever i rewatch it... though i do have to laugh a little at amy adams's accent when speaking mandarin. villeneuve has directed some of my favorite films in recent years, including this one and dune part 1 and 2, so i'm eagerly anticipating dune: messiah. i hope to eventually get around to reading the short story that arrival is based on ("story of your life" by ted chiang).

I'm glad you saw this movie and that you understood it more than other people, I loved all that mystical part that it has, lost a number of people that I care... never a child though...I cant have a baby, never could but I AM an aunt and the though that something could happen to any of them always is there and its difficult, and you know what? is even more difficult to have this kind of visions or dreams and that suddenly is something real and you cant tell anyone or people start to say youre crazy....this movie really toch me.... now the one you should watch is "Sphere" from 1998 with Dustin Hoffman and Samuel L. Jackson.... such an excellent movie, just like this one.... take care my dear!

I don't know that Louise had a choice because it already happened. Hannah already existed and had a wonderful, happy life full of love, although it was short. The choice is whether to love even knowing the pain that is to come and that's a universal question. This movie is just a gorgeous piece of sci-fi and I wish there were more like it.

I think we understand her visions differently. The aliens showed her what would be, so she could make a choice. If when she saw the Chinese President giving her his number she refused to make the call or act on the ‘vision’ (I used the word vision to differentiate) - the war would have happened. The hepatods were trying to explain the weapons hidden in their ship but it happened anyway because she didn’t understand and couldn’t stop it. She couldn’t change it. The same things could have applied to the latter, hepatods were saying humanity isn’t a slave to destiny - they could make a better future with the decisions they make. They showed her the path of her life and the tragedies, and left it to her - to choose - she could have changed it. You make your own destiny. It’s a beautiful story. I loved it

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. Thanks for the input, Kemi. I love your insight about not being a slave to destiny and the idea of the gift of foresight as a way to change things for the better. I think I would still make the same choice Louise did, but that's a personal thing and I wouldn't say either way is right or wrong. It really is a beautiful story.
