Let’s not forget that in addition to writing the theme song for this movie that his band had the 1983 smash album, “Sports.” It went to #1, spawning 10 #1 hit singles, and stayed on the Billboard charts for 160 weeks. It was also the #2 album of the entire year, beaten out by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” (just the best selling album in history). When this movie came out he was a big name, yet a lot of people even then didn’t recognize him in the film.

The last scene with them flying off to 2015 was just a fun way to end it. There were no sequel(s) planned. The movie was such a huge hit they decided to make it a trilogy. The best movie trilogy ever made in my opinion.

They wouldn't have ended it that way if they'd known they would make a sequel. No Jennifer, and no movie set in the future. I would like to think that Doc would arrive in the dark of night, to avoid being seen by anyone around, several weeks later to get Marty, and no sense of urgency because he has a time machine.

A couple of minor things: The mall is originally named "Twin Pines Mall." If you look closely, you'll see that Old Man Peabody had a pair of pine trees at the end of his driveway -- but Marty runs over one of them. When Marty goes back to 1985, the mall is named "Lone Pine Mall." There are a lot of small details like that. The joke about Biff saying, "Make like a tree and get out of here," is that it was an incorrect use of slang that's now fallen out of use. The correct slang is, "Make like a tree and leave." The fact that Biff gets it wrong was a statement of Biff's intelligence (or lack thereof). "Great Scott" is another slang term that's fallen out of use. It was an interjection of surprise, amazement, or dismay. It is a distinctive but inoffensive exclamation, popular in the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. It originated as a minced oath, historically associated with two specific "Scotts": Scottish author Sir walter Scott and, later, US general Winfield Scott. This film creates a weird paradox that's neither broached nor resolved: When Marty returns to 1985, he sees a version of himself go back in time. However, _it's not the same Marty_ . It's an Alternate Marty who grew up in the future that Original Marty created where his father is a successful, self-confident scifi novelist; his family is completely different; and Doc isn't killed by the Libyans. The question becomes: what did Alternate Marty do when he went back to 1955? He might interfere with his parents' meeting, but to him it would be the way he'd always heard his parents recount the story: that a teenager named Calvin "Marty" Klein was hit by Lorraine's father; that Lorraine was infatuated with him for a few days; and that this ultimately led to Biff's attempted SA of her and George clocking Biff. This whole thing is entirely glossed-over and never mentioned. Over the years, fans have speculated that the easiest answer is that Alternate Doc, now aware of everything Original Marty did, simply made certain that the plutonium was packed so that Alternate Marty could immediately return to 1985. However, that still creates a paradox, since there would then be _two different Martys_ who'd arrive back in Alternate 1985. Don't think too much about it, because the logical implications get very, very twisted. It ultimately results in what scifi fans call an "Infinite Loop Paradox," where multiple different Martys start showing up in 1955. Eventually, Doc's only reasonable response would be to never follow through with the time machine at all. In any case, the entire matter is totally glosssed-over. It's best to forget about it and enjoy the films, because dramatically they're very good. Indeed, the script for this film is taught in film schools as the "perfect script" because of the way it's structured. There are entire textbooks written about it. There's an ongoing question of how Original Marty got together with Doc. According to the director and writer, Original Marty had been told by Principal Stickland that Doc was a dangerous nutcase. Being the average teenager, Original Marty pushed-back by going to Doc's lab to see for himself. He found himself impressed by all the weird gadgets Doc had lying around. Doc then hired Marty to work part-time at the lab doing odd jobs for him. Along the way, Marty convinced Doc to build the gigantic amplifier for his electric guitar that we see in the opening of the film. Another point: in the early hours of October 15, 2015, fans gathered at the Puente Hills Mall, the shooting location of the Lone/Twin Pines Mall, to celebrate the impending arrival of the DeLorean. Sadly, no flying DeLorean ever appeared above or near it, but the fan celebration was well-covered in the press. On a personal note: as an early Gen-Xer, I was the same age as the "teenaged" actors. I instantly fell in love with Lea Thompson and continue to be infatuated with her today. Female reactors like to say, "Eyes up here," when Lorraine removes her sweater in the car. Guys my age have never been able to keep their eyes "up here." It's impressive that Lea was able to transition out of ingenue roles, which is rare in Hollywood. Typically, actresses simply "age out" and are discarded, but Lea continued to act for some time. She's also a successful Broadway actress and has now transitioned into directing. Lea remains beautiful, and is one of the few actress/directors her age who hasn't resorted to surgery nor botox nor enhancements. She's aged far better than me, and I really respect her not having chosen the enhancement route. No doubt if I were to ever meet her, I'd become a drooling fanboy and embarrass myself. 💗

Truly a phenomenon of the 1980s. Don't talk about this era of film without this one. 1 of 2 films that starred a Michael J. Fox in the same year while doing the tv series, Family Ties and one of Christopher Lloyd's most iconic roles ever. Blending the genres of science fiction, adventure and comedy in a way that was undenialble. Changing one's past or even altering the future of one place or many people does mess with your head at first. But it is all good fun and affected a lot of us as viewers, I watched this on video and was blown away by it at age 5, Huey Lewis and The News with their 2 songs (Power of Love, Back In Time) are true classics still great. One of Spielberg's legendary productions, No.1 film of 1985 and Oscar-winner for Best Sound Effects Editing. Wendie Jo Sperber (Marty's sister) passed away in 2005. By all means, please react to the sequels as they are perfection too.

The original “it’s your kids” ending was originally just a joke. At the time there were no plans for any sequels nor did anyone know that this film was going to be the amazing success that it ultimately was. Its success inevitably led to sequels, although it would be another four years before the first sequel came out.

I so enjoyed this video, Liala! "Back to the Future" was one of my favorites growing up, and I love to see people experiencing it for the first time. So many people praise its efficient storytelling and well-written characters. For me, it's just plain fun. I especially appreciated your kindness and sympathy towards Marty's dad. Lots of reactors seem far too ready to criticize George for his lack of assertiveness, and his reluctance to stand up to the bullies. As one who experienced bullying for much of my youth, I can say that standing up to someone bigger and stronger isn't nearly as easy as anyone would like to think. P.S. It gave me a chuckle every time you said, 'tits up'. That was a favourite expression of my mom's, too. 😁

7:50 So consider a couple points you tend not to connect, the first time you see this movie. When the DeLorean first disappeared, into the future, it left a couple fire trails behind. Now that it arrives from the past, it's covered with ice. Looks like the transition through time is something that tends to leave heat behind.

I think an interesting touch would have been that when Marty returns to 1985, everyone is calling him Calvin. When he finds Doc Brown the Doc starts out calling him Calvin, bet then remembers, when they had met in the past his name had been Marty. How weird would it be to travel back in time, get your parents together, then return to discover you had a different name because your mother thought your name was Calvin. There was a story arc in Doctor who where the Doctor's companion spends her Honeymoon in the Tardis and she conceived a child (who was later kidnapped). Because she was conceived in the TARDIS she acquired the ability to regenerate. So when she traveled back in time to when her mother was the same age she was, she became the BFF of her mother. This was something she knew but her mother did not. The weird part was, the companion named her daughter after her childhood best friend who was, in fact, he daughter.

She previously was memorable in the hilarious I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1978) also directed by BTTF's Robert Zemeckis (someone should definitely react to this earlier film). Tragically, Sperber died of breast cancer in 2005 at the age of 47.

1. Cranky principal Strickland/James Tolkan also played the ship's squadron leader in "Top Gun". 2. The teacher that tells Marty, "I'm afraid you're just too darn loud" is Huey Lewis himself. (Heart of rock and roll) 3. Eric Stoltz was first cast as Marty, but he didn't play well with others and was fired. Some of his long shots are still in the movie. 4. The flammable material set on fire with the model exercise had to have been put there on purpose. 5. It's always fun to see how people react to the Marty and his mom car scene. 🤣 6. George McFly/Crispin Glover didn't like that the story ended with the family being prosperous. 7. Twin Pines Mall becomes Lone Pine Mall when Marty takes one out when he goes back to 1955. 8. IMVHO part II is the best of the trifecta. 9. If you want a first time/share of an OUTSTANDING movie where Christopher Lloyd plays the heavy you must do "Who Framed Roger Rabbit".

The movie Christopher Lloyd was in the year before this was fantastic- _The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension_ . In addition to Christopher Lloyd, it also starred, Peter Weller (Robocop, Star Trek: Into Darkness), John Lithgow (3rd Rock From the Sun), Ellen Barkin (Ocean’s Thirteen), Clancy Brown (SpongeBob SquarePants), and Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park). It’s kind of like an Avengers movie if it was set in the fifties, with inventions replacing superpowers.

25:12 "And _this_ is the way it's supposed to be." Yeah. But consider the stroke of _brilliance_ they carried out in the change in dynamics from the _first_ time through to the _second._ The _first_ time through, George and Lorraine ended up together because Lorraine's father hit George with his car, and while their household was nursing him, her heart went out to him. The _second_ time through, George and Lorraine ended up together because George discovered he had it in himself to stand up to bullies. Such a discovery requires courage, and accordingly, changes whatever subsequent trajectory his life is destined to follow. George's entire _life_ would be better, from that moment on.

There's an aspect of George's transformation that isn't made explicit, but it's impossible not to see it once it's been pointed out: George is left-handed. See, not terribly long ago (even as recently as the 70s, depending on where you’re from), there was a belief among some pockets of Western culture that being left-handed was evil and unnatural, and kids would be forced to learn to use their right hands. When he’s writing it looks like he doesn’t know how to hold a pen. It’s one of the main sources of his awkwardness. And what was his big moment? When his right hand was disabled, and he was forced to deck Biff with a left hook. If you watch the scene again, look at the joy in his face as he stares at his left hand. He’s not just pleased with himself that he flattened a bully, but he has decided at that moment that he’s going to be himself.

Back to the future is a great trilogy. It has drama, comedy , and some edge of your seat action. Michael J Fox is and will always be a show stealer! You cannot go wrong with Back To The Future!

every time travel movie i have ever seen where they will know someone in the future but meet in the past never recognize them in the present. back to the future is a great example his parents should have had memory's of seeing their kid in the past when he came back to the present considering he is the one that got them together

Ronald Reagan loved this movie so much that when they mentioned him, he laughed so hard he had the projectionist rewind the film to watch it again. He later used the quote "Where we're going we don't need roads" in a speech from the White House.

This is just a great movie. Not only is it a classic but it is about as close as you can get to a perfect movie. The pacing is spot on. The dialogue is well written and everything has a pay off. No loose pointless dialogue or hanging plot points. It has just the right balance of comedy and drama. And it is absolutely chock full of Easter eggs that you will continue to pick up on with multiple watches. It’s a classic for a reason. And, unlike many other franchises, the sequels do not disappoint.

11:22, good eye! This was filmed in the famous "Courthouse square" which is a backlot of Universal Studios, many other movies/shows were filmed there, The Good Place, Ghost Whisperer, etc...

I don't know if you noticed. At the start of the movie, they where at the TWIN PINES MALL carpark. Then when Marty goes back in the past, he runs over one Pine tree with the car. Then when he goes back to the future. Its called the LONE PINE MALL.

This movie has such a memorable score. Which even if you didn't grew up in the 80s you can still recognize Alan Silvestri as he composed the music for the Avengers movies too.

Great reaction Liana like always, love this movie its one of my favourites, and the trilogy is a timeless masterpiece. There are a cameo in this one, Huey Lewis and the News provided the song "Back in Time" to the Back to the Future soundtrack, which played during the film's credits. At the beginning of Back to the Future, Huey Lewis took on a nerdy persona in an uncredited cameo as a judge for Battle of the Bands. Marty's band "The Pinheads" played a hard rock cover of Huey Lewis and the News' "Power of Love," but were ironically rejected by Huey Lewis' character. And this was the first film role for Billy Zane While he played a bigger role than a short cameo, Billy Zane made his acting debut as Biff's friend Match in this movie and second. Keep up the good work.

The George McFly house is the same house in Michael J Fox movie Teen Wolf. The guy that says you’re too darn loud Is Hewey Lewis which sings The Power Of Love in this movie. Also a fun fact the same town is also filmed for the movie Gremlins. The clock tower is at the Warner Brothers studios in LA

As to George being a peeping Tom: A) it was seen as far more acceptable back then, when it was illegal for teens to buy porn if they were under 21 B) Lorraine’s father identified Marty as “another one” of these damned kids-this was not the first teenager to fall out of that tree. C) Lorraine is undressing in front of an open window, with the curtains wide open D) Lorraine, when telling the story of how she and George met, said, “What was it you were doing in the tree, George? ‘Birdwatching,’ wasn’t it?😉😜”. Lorraine knew what the neighborhood boys were doing in her tree, and she was passively encouraging it because it gave her a thrill.

Also Lea Thompson after this movie did a cult classic HOWARD THE DUCK. This is the First Marvel Movie ever made with the help of Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas from Star Wars. While some say it is so bad it's good I've always enjoyed it and took its special effects for what it is and when it was made. (1986). Hope your willing to checknit pit several good parts including Lea as a singer big hair and all !!!

1.21 gigawatts is 1210 megawatts. In 1955 that took about sixty nuclear power plants. Today there is a 1.6 gigawatt power plant in Finland, but imagine telling them you need to borrow 75.625% of their power to make a car disappear.

If you look carefully when Marty leaves Doc's lab after blowing up his speaker, the man driving the blue pickup truck that Marty grabs on to is Steven Spielberg. The man some people say driving the Jeep being Spielberg, is not true. That is the Stunt Coordinator Walter Scott.

TRIVIA: Something people under 50 don't know is that this movie was so popular in the '80s that in one of his State of the Union speeches (I think it was in the State of the Union speech), when talking about America's future, President Reagan quoted the last line in this movie and said, "Where we're going, we don't need roads." Also, the nerd in the high school gym that told Marty, "You're just too darn loud," was the rock star then, Huey Lewis, whose hit song Marty was trying to perform before Huey cut him off - a gag young reactors like Liala don't catch because of their youth.

I was a Jr in High School and saw this opening Night ! The entire theater cheered and clapped at the end . There had never been anything like I before . Michael J Fox was a huge star at ye time from being on a prime time show called Family Ties. He filmed this on weekend and nights when not doing the TV show . He replaced another actor that originally had the part but did not work out in the role after filming started . They then called Michael J Fox . Who stepped in even with his busy schedule
