I stopped loaning books before I ever saw this episode. I loaned books exactly twice, and each time they came back to me utterly destroyed and were never replaced. One was shut in the latch of a glovebox so that it tore the cover and first pages, and bent the whole thing up, and the other had a drink sat on it and its contents fully spilled on it.

I'm one of those types that doesn't even open the book up flat because of what it might do to the spine, so I leave both sides at something like a 45-60 degree angle. "This show is like everything sucks ... there's no hope." It is very much the anti-TNG. That never fundamentally changes, but there are moments of hope that do come. Think back to how the previous episode ended with adding one to the population count. It's small, but it's a signal that there *is* hope, even within the traumatic context of this apocalyptic genocide. Hope you stick with it long enough to see more of those moments 🙂

That style of shooting was taken from Homicide: Life on the Street, where they shot it like the cameraman was a documentarian who was in the room with the cast. The Office (UK) doing the same style of shooting was supposed to lend it credence as a fake documentary, as none of the cast were that well known at the time. But the American Office did the same thing and it became The way to shoot cringe comedy as a result of that show's success.

I’m finding it interesting that you guys are confused. Never had that problem when watching but it’s always interesting how different ppl process things. But just cos it’s serialised doesn’t mean it’s suffering the issues of modern TV. Something about post-Netflix TV making has really messed up how stories are paced and written now which BSG doesn’t suffer from as each ep still feels like a chapter of a larger story, unlike modern TV where it’s a 10-hour story randomly cut up into ten pieces.

I'll just say that it's not all dark and gloomy in BSG land. There'll be humour, there'll be light-hearted moments and moments to cheer with the crew. It doesn't happen too often, but that makes these moments all the more important. It's obviously darker than your average Trek show - but it's a good fit for BSG, given its story of humanity being on the run after nearly getting wiped out. This version of BSG commits to that theme a lot harder than the original seemed to do. Was surprised to see the confusion about Boomer. With her apparent memory loss and her issues with reporting the positive H20 scan right in front of her, it felt pretty clear that theres some hidden sleeper agent programming going on. After all, the best spy or saboteur would be the one that doesn't even know that he's a saboteur. Though admittedly, it doesn't quite work out all that well, because the "human" mind of Boomer is now certainly aware that there's something wrong with her (or someone's trying to frame her). Now as for Sharon back on Caprica... well, that'll be revealed as time goes on.

I'm watching through Columbo, and since S2 of that show, it just shows a bunch of random, out pf context clips from the episode right at the start. I think that was just a thing TV in the 70s did. Granted, Columbo's whole deal was showing the murder at the start, with the mystery being how he'll solve it, so it's not like it was spoiling big reveals.

I think I read somewhere that Ron Moore served on an aircraft Carrier at some point. Galactica is kind of modelled on what they are: there's always a crew awake on the bridge “CIC”, there's always a number of aircraft out flying the “CAP” day and night … things like that. I saw one of the Mike Rowe episodes where he spent a few days on an Aircraft Carrier and immediately thought about this show. I am going to be following your reactions and comments. You have made me a fan of your channel by the insightful comments on TNG, which I quite enjoy. Cheers guys 🍺

Let me just say that I hop you guys stay with the series to the end, even if you don't do every episode as a reaction video. Like every TV show, including TNG, BSG had its "growing pains" where the early episodes were not among the best the series would eventually have to offer. I do think it is important to watch every episode, however, as _unlike_ TNG, BSG is _HIGHLY_ serialized. Missing one episode could seriously jeopardize your understanding of the overall plot. And, as someone who _has_ seen the entire series start to finish, I will say that I firmly believe that the series climax is definitely worth the wait.
@JAF729
@JAF729 3 ай бұрын
Ron Moore had to deal with a lot of restrictions when making TNG. This is his show and he took advantage of that. It's almost the opposite of TNG. The dark tone of the show, the sets, serialized stories, and hand held camera work are all things he couldn't do on TNG. Also hand held camera work on TV was pretty new at this time especially when used during space battles. After Battlestar Galactica almost every sci-fi show followed his trend.. I think you are right, you need to readjust to serialized television again and trust that all will be answered and the characters will continue to develop over time. On a side note I always loved Mary McDowell as the president (I have a bit of crush on her). She's a pretty amazing actress - have you seen Dances with Wolves? Good stuff

"I had to rewire my brain." Yep, that rewiring that was required for Trek is pretty much what will have to happen again if you choose to stick with BSG. There are great character arcs and terrific acting and some very nifty battle sequences in BSG, which will help keep you engaged. But you'll have to adjust to the fact that instead of consuming the 78 little stories that TOS tells or the 150+ little stories that TNG tells (accounting for TNG's multi-episode stories), you're consuming one big BSG story that stretches over 76 episodes. BSG fans will tell you the big story is very satisfying, but it's not what you think it is at the beginning, and it takes shape slowly with a lot of reveals along the way but some key mysteries left unresolved until the very end. That makes BSG harder to react to than Trek. With Trek you either like this week's little story or you don't and you can explain why. It's more difficult to decide what you think about this week's BSG episode when a lot happens but the big story only moves ahead by inches (which is most often the case). I found BSG's big story so compelling and beautifully constructed that it was easily worth the wait to see it all unfold. But a sizable minority of BSG viewers feel differently. If you think you're going to be frustrated a lot because the answers to some of your questions are literally seasons away from being answered, best to end your reactions to BSG before you get too far along. I still urge you both to watch the series on your own because I think you'll enjoy and appreciate it at the end, but you won't have to deal with trying to formulate reactions that satisfy an audience.

Try not to think of the shaky cam as "sitcom" but rather "war journalist embedded within war torn city", that might help your emersion. The idea that not everything is clean cut and easy to understand is central to the story. As in life it becomes harder to tell good from bad when everything is a shade of grey.

I always thought, even back in the day, that OG Battlestar Galactica was a missed opportunity. Think about the situation. Almost everyone you ever knew is dead. Everything you ever loved about your homeworld is gone. The enemy that killed your life and your home is chasing you. If they catch you, you will die. Yet, damn! Flying to the new planet of the week sure is fun! This version of BSG takes that premise--survivors trying to survive against an implacable enemy--and follows it more realistically. And while, yes it is dark, there are moments of true joy that is made all the brighter being surrounded by the dark.

I understand that it's in most people's nature to inherently and sometimes subconsciously compare a show to (in this show's case) the one it's rebooted from or other shows in the same genre, but you can't really compare this version of Battlestar Galactica to those. Most shows take a while to "get up to speed" and become interesting. I can't tell you how many shows I gave up on after one or two episodes (and in some cases, not even being able to finish the very first episode) because they never really drew me in, yet they are beloved by so many. I still haven't seen some of those shows to this day. However, there are shows that I decided to finally bite my tongue and force my way through watching more than just a few episodes and found out I loved them and why I didn't just delve into the entire series right away. Ted Lasso and The Good Place are prime examples of shows I love, but never watched when they first came out.

Picking up on the transition from episodic to season long arcs (where one episode might exist entirely to set up the premise of the next) is a great point. BSG was kinda on the frontier of that transition in TV and I wonder how it holds up for a first watch compared to what we're accustomed to now. I'll definitely be interested in coming back and seeing how your opinions shape up as the season progresses - Did Ron Moore actually do a great job with BSG, or was he just tapping into an approach that needed another decade in the oven to eventually perfect?

The style of camera work is based on the documentaries filmed during WW2 and the Korean War. Back then there were few times the cinematographers had access to nice steady tripods and were often in the midst of the battle themselves. Yes it can be frantic, but I think if BSG had been filmed as if there were heavy studio cameras gliding on dollies the realism of the show would have been diminished.

@@qam2024 Remember BSG was on the Sci-Fi/SyFy channel (can't remember when they rebranded themselves for the umpteenth time.). Though it was their highest rated show, their subscriber base was never that great. S1 was definitely the tightest of them all, but every season had some great episodes (Resurrection Ship was the peak IMO.)

i think the ending scene shows the cylon being in control of boomer there (she looks so "robotic") so even when she fought it before the cylon can always take over in the end. (no spoilers i didnt watch she show long enouhg to know its just what i see in that scene)

If you are like me, you might end up loving the President if she's a good guy or hating her if she's a bad guy. Either way, if you are like me, you won't stay lukewarm on her. P.S. On my first couple watch-throughs, I couldn't handle the shaky cam. I moaned about it so much. I still don't really care for it, but I'm so used to it now that it doesn't pull me out of the show anymore.

Asteroids and other stellar bodies tend to have frozen ice in addition to other minerals. That is what they were looking for, not like a Star Trek style class-M planet. The current space race we have going in our world is basically billionaires racing to be the first ones to access that wealth or resources. I like Roslin but she is a rather annoying character to start with. Baltar grows a lot, as do most of the characters, I hope you guys have the patience for it because season 1 is a bit of a trickle. Starbuck is basically the main character of this show in many ways.

The first couple of seasons were pretty good. I can't remember exactly when the wheels fell off for me, but when they fell off. they fell of hard. The show basically turns into a soap opera in space after that. This is one of the best episodes from my recollection.

As a point of trivia, the new BSG debuted in 2004, "The Office" in 2005, so if anything "The Office" imitated BSG with the "Shakey Cam".😊

Like you I had trouble getting into this - mainly because I saw the original - and I've never really liked losing all the optimism and making things more dystopian*. If they had presented this as a totally new show I might not have had a problem with it. But I keep getting taken out of it because of the show/ship and character names. On the other hand would I have paid any attention to this series without those names? * For instance - They're on a quest for the lost 13th colony in the original and the score/theme is epic - all characters are optimistic they'll find it. Here they're supposedly looking for the 13th colony but the main characters know it's a ruse to keep the civilians from panicing and have little hope of finding any sanctuary and the score/theme is disturbing.

It might not feel like much - But I highly recommend you watch the EU version of this season's intro (especially if you don't end up continuing) the American version only has the melody, but we, who got the show globally, heard the rendition of the intro with the vocals, and they are so powerful the showerunners included them in the US broadcast for the coming seasons - but right now, the omission for me is so stark I can see why you don't feel much from it..

They're watching the Blu-ray set. For whatever reason, season 1 has the "no singing" intro, but all the rest of the seasons use the intro with the vocals and modified melody. So they'll get to them. I think it was just a way to represent both intro versions (UK and US) for the "complete" home release.

I'll be honest, I really had a hard time getting into Season One, while others loved it immediately. Season Two was what got me attached. But then Season Three lost me again and I didn't come back until like the last 12 episodes or something like that. If you guys do decide to keep watching the entire show, I recommend starting a flow chart to keep track of who you suspect are Cylons.

I was a fan of the original and also had a hard time with season one. I stopped watching, but when I heard so much talk about how great the show was during season two, I revisited the series. That time, I loved it from the start. I think my brain just needed time to adjust to how dramatically different this is than the original.

In a way it strengthens the appreciation of TNG that they are able to provide a rounded story and develop characters despite the limits imposed by a 45 minute episodic show. They may also find watching TNG to be a nice pick-me-up, BSG can be quite gruelling!
