Hey guys....this was way too cool ...different style of acting (very slow exchanges) lol but still pure entertainment and amazing fight combinations. These martial artists are all extremely talented, love Frank Dux's story in this. You guys be the judge if the story is fabricated or real, but I'd rather let it sit in my mind that some cool guy brought this culture of mixed martial arts into the limelight with this film which definitely inspired me to just learn the reverse roundhouse kick, and jump kick moves. Martial arts for me is about all life skills learned through movement and patterns, the athleticism/flexibility gained is always a huge plus, but the discipline gained is key.

"Bricks dont hit back" A lot of Bolo's( Chong Li) lines are similar to Bruce Lee in Enter The Dragon, which Bolo also appeared in. The Big Boss(1971) The Way Of The Dragon( aka return of the dragon, 1972) Fists of Fury( aka The Chinese Connection, 1972) and Enter The Dragon(1973) great Bruce Lee movies.

34:50 "What did he do, did he crack his back?" In a deleted bit of footage after the sumo guy broke his opponent's back with a bear hug he reached down and ripped his nose right off of his face. The scene makes more sense when you consider that bit of extra brutality, because it then cuts to Janice as she makes a horrified expression. In the next shot when sumo guy raises his hands in victory you can see that his right hand is bloodied from disfiguring his opponent. Just a little extra trivia from one of my favorite martial arts flicks.

Loving this movie since 1987!!! Got a call from a school friend....'You've got to come over, I have this fight movie with all kinds of big guys, even bigger than you'....I am a real big guy and certainly back then fit as can be. 😄 Been a Jean Claude fan since then! For another martial arts movie that doesn't get enough praise I recommend 'Chocolate', also known as 'Zen, warrior within'. A Thai movie, nice story....and the action is out of this world, Yanin "Jeeja" Vismitananda is awesome! The music for Bloodsport is lifting an already great movie to even more heights....perfect score! I got the original soundtracl on cd and the remaster from a couple of years back. Now only the 2004 version to go as that one features 1 song not found on the other 2....have to pull out the wallet for it one of these days.

"Aren't you a little young for full-contact?" "Aren't you a little old for videogames?" Fun Fact: Paulo Tocha is a real-life Muay Thai champion. Location Location Fact: This is one of the few films featuring scenes filmed inside Kowloon Walled City before its destruction. MK Connection Fact: Midway's hit videogame, Mortal Kombat (1992), took huge inspiration from the film and even used a parody of Jean-Claude Van Damme for the character Johnny Cage, who has a similar costume, back story and a familiar split punch. According to game creator John Tobias, they wanted to make a "gritty" game based on the film. Historical Fact: The movie was touted as a true story, but over the years, doubts have arisen about its veracity. Most martial-arts enthusiasts view Frank Dux's accounts of competing in secret tournaments as complete fiction, along with his claims he was an undercover CIA operative. Some have pointed out that nobody else has come forward to confirm his story about competing in secret tournaments, or told their own version. It is now generally accepted that Dux lied his way into Hollywood, and that he has likely never won or even competed in a single martial arts tournament. Records obtained through the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) show he was only in the US Marine Corps Reserve, and was never posted overseas, let alone to Southeast Asia as he has claimed. The CIA has no record of his ever working with them. His personal brand of martial arts, Dux Ryu Ninjitsu, is also a complete fabrication. Frank Dux never has and does not hold any of the world records listed at the end of the film. Like his own back story and claims of kumite success, these are all pure fiction.

This was one of very few Western movies to have actually filmed within Kowloon Walled City, before it was demolished. Those scenes where it looks like they're in a hallway inside a dark basement? Those were filmed on a "street" within the city; the electric wires were indeed electric wires, strung from building to building without any standards or oversight. Really fascinating place. Oh, and the police not wanting to do anything about the Kumite was actually relatively accurate from an historical standpoint: due both to a diplomatic dispute over sovereignty of Kowloon Walled City and to the rampant, triad-related crime inside it, for most of its history the police refused to enter the city. I took some mixed martial arts classes (primarily Muay Thai & Bando) at a local college many years ago. I always said I learned exactly enough to get my butt royally kicked in a fight. 😄 Bloodsport was based on an _allegedly_ true story...that is, "true" in the sense that only Frank Dux had any recollection of the events depicted but he never backed down from his claims.

If it has not been suggested or on your list yet, you might enjoy the original "Best of the Best". I love Bloodsport, but there is one thing I don't like much about it. The majority of the film sets up Chong Li as an efficient, ruthless and very skilled fighter. Yet the final match with Dux makes him look like a punk that has to cheat (blinding powder) in order to get in more than one or two effective strikes. Irony in what happened to Ray Jackson. The first shot that incapacitated him was a kick in the throat. You can see Ray grabbing his neck before he goes down . Just like the fellow Chong Li killed in the last Kumite.

It is good that you had some training. You know that fancy kicks and moves are not the most important thing you need to get away from an attacker. For those who have no training just remember that the thumb/fingertips is the weakest point of a grip. You look at the hand and pull hard against that weak point and run! The eyes are a good target as well when attacked. Shins are a good target too. The groin is also a hot shot hit if you are cornered. Most important is to keep calm and remember these tips.

I love the older 80s martial arts movies. The very first movie that I saw with Van Damme was Missing In Action, and the first movie I saw with him that showed how skillful he was as a martial artist was a movie called No Retreat, No Surrender. I loved the old 80s ninja movies, so when he played opposite of Sho Kosugi in Black Eagle, I was pleasantly surprised and have been a fan of Van Damme's ever since then. Another poster commented about their request for more 80s movies, and I'll piggyback off that comment with the idea you had of "themed" videos. It would be really neat to do 80s and 90s martial arts, samurai, and ninja films. Nobody reacts to them, and there are really multiple dozens of movies to choose from. Great reaction, btw!

At 31:33 , we see the, now world famous, Paulo Tocha with the very tricky "hands up, dont shoot" stance. His character name is Paco, or The Kickboxer. Lol. This is a small sect of MMA called Krav Manga. What makes this stance so dangerous is your hands are up in a defensive way. But they are also up and ready to strike. Its a non-aggressive fighting stance that keeps your opponent guessing. Its a technique that's taught in many many self defense classes today. Think of it as offensive self defense. Paulo is essentially playing himself in the movie.

The reason why they didn't disqualify Chong Li is because the Kumite is essentially a deathmatch. It's to bring not only the strongest fighters, but the deadliest. What Chong Li did was to be expected in this tournament, not just him, but from everyone who participates. It seems killing is discouraged, but not against the rules. It also seems cheap shots and low blows are acceptable in the Kumite.
@ScytherOnSpree
@ScytherOnSpree Жыл бұрын
If it's accepted then what's the reason at the end they turn their backs on Chong Li? I know it's not canon but they did the same with Demon in Bloodsport 2, so it must be at least some kinda rule against it that everybody uniformly knows - including the audiance?
@brianrecinos3914
@brianrecinos3914 Жыл бұрын
@@ScytherOnSpree Perhaps because this is a secret tournament, it's not bound by any official rules one would expect from a public tournament, except one the Kumite has. It was mentioned before that Chong Li had killed another fighter in the last tournament and yet, nothing was mentioned on what the committee did with him about it. It's possible that they don't view killing as necessary in the Kumite and may prefer to handle matches without it, however, even these officials must abide by the secret rules the Kumite has, including acceptance of murder. If they can't outlaw it, they may as well turn their backs in displeasure instead.

A really great movie. Fyi "The Brick not hit back" is a Bruce Lee Pharse. Also this movie and Big Trouble in Litle Chine were the inspiration for Mortal Kombat game. Mortal Kombat was suppose to be a Van Damme game after the success of this movie. Van Damme inspired the Johnny Cage character (You see the split punch to the balls scene just like Johnny Cage). You should see other martial arts by Van Dame and others. Van Damme movies like Kickboxer , Double Impact ,Cyborg, Lion Heart, Universal Solider, TimeCop. Especially I highly recommand you see "No Retrat No Surrender" (Van Damm is the bad guy in it) which is a kind of Karate Kid movie with much better fights. 23:52 The dude playing Parades (Michel Qissi) have you seen in kickboxer, he played the villain Tong Po, he also played the villain in Lionheart another movie with Van Damme. 20:56 This switch coin scene is a Bruce lee tribute/easter egg.

The first movie I ever seen JCVD in was “No Retreat No Surrender.” He was the main villain in that one and it was the movie that put him on the map. Ps, I trained with Bill “Super Foot” Wallace and Keith Hackney. My daughter is a 17 year old Golden Glove boxer and trains at Strong Style with Stipe. Its incredibly important to teach young ladies how to protect themselves. Might as well train with some of the best. If you get a chance watch The Last Dragon. It’s one of the most influential martial arts films ever made. Especially for the culture.

It's funny how this movie inspired the birth of video games like Mortal Kombat and Pit Fighter.

You may also want to check out The Quest with Van Damme. It's basically Bloodsport pt 2, but it does have some interesting tangents.

Have you seen the Mortal Kombat video someone made out of this? They also made a Street Fight version with Lionheart. Both are really neat. And a fun fact, Willie Nelson is a 5th degree black belt in a Korean martial art and "Al Bundy" Ed O'neil is a black belt in BJJ as well. haha

The virulent opposition to Dux fighting is because he was in the US Marines (for some reason, the uniforms look like period Air Force, but I wasn't in either service). In the 80s, it was widely believed that miltary personnel themselves were "government property", and so any personnel doing anything likely to result in injury not in the line of assigned duty were risking a "damaging government property" charge. The government itself denies the story, but it seems everybody who ever served was told this anywayl

You should watch the first couple of seasons of the UFC. It was truly a blood sport and it pitted different martial arts and other fighting styles against each other. Boxer vs Wushu or Greco Roman vs Aikido or Shorin Ryu vs Tae Kwon Do, etc.

Chueng Lee real name is actor Bolo Young. He plays against Jean-Claude Van Damme in another action karate movie That I cannot remember what it's called and there's another one that I can't recall. The man stays fit up to today. I have almost everyone of his movies. Ask Patreon to send you more of Mr. Damme movies. Keep it up lady. You are doing a fine job.
