It's fun to watch this episode when you remember that David Tennant is a Shakespearian actor at heart. If you want to see something amazing, look for a video of his performance of the "to be or not to be" speech from Hamlet. In 2008, the Globe Theater did a recorded version of Hamlet in modern costume and David played Hamlet. He was soooooo good. Just about the most mesmerizing version of the speech I've ever seen.

Being sectioned is the British slang for being committed to the psychological unit of a hospital. The pub joke is, because Shakespeare is known as the Bard (storyteller) so the landlord (owner of the pub) was saying you bared (banned) entry.

The historical episodes are some of my favorites! I wish the doctor, or at least the companions, would commit to it and dress in historical dress more often

The Doctor should have given Martha an Elizabethan outfit from the TARDIS, at least.

I'd never noticed before but the fictional homeland of Martha, Freedonia, is from the Marx Brothers film Duck Soup.

I’m so glad you enjoy Martha. I also love the historical ones.

Freedonia is from the Marx Brothers movie "Duck Soup". Check it out sometime. Check out Horse Feathers and Monkey Business. All good fun from the 30's.

"Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" by Dylan Thomas _Do not go gentle into that good night,_ _Old age should burn and rave at close of day;_ _Rage, rage against the dying of the light._ _Though wise men at their end know dark is right,_ _Because their words had forked no lightning they_ _Do not go gentle into that good night._ _Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright_ _Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,_ _Rage, rage against the dying of the light._ _Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,_ _And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,_ _Do not go gentle into that good night._ _Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight_ _Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,_ _Rage, rage against the dying of the light._ _And you, my father, there on the sad height,_ _Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray._ _Do not go gentle into that good night._ _Rage, rage against the dying of the light._

Yas! You beat me to it... From the movie Back to School with Rodney Dangerfield, right?

One of my favourite episodes. It left me with such joy and satisfaction, as few of the others did. Shakespeare is perfect: shrewd and clever, just as I imagine him.

the gag of having martha’s first trip be to the past and then telling her to walk around like she owns the place…boy if you don’t quit playin and guard me with your life 😭😭😭 martha doesn’t get enough love. she’s incredibly smart and quick. i hate that she gets so hung up on the doctor and that that’s the majority of what we experience with her as her time as a companion.

Don’t worry, they’ll explain what The Doctor did to Liz much later

Well, my favorite portrayal of Shakespeare may be Joseph Fiennes in _Shakespeare in Love._

@@TravisViews It's pretty cool. A lot of Shakespeare taking lines people say as part of his work.

Season 3 is a good one, there isn't really a truly weak episode out of the whole season and this is one of the better ones. Martha is great but I still prefer Rose. 'Sectioned' in the UK means being detained under the mental health act. If you're considered so mentally unwell you're a danger to yourself or others, various people may apply for a person to be sectioned, such as a close family member, doctor etc.

The Doctor should have given her an Elizabethan outfit, not belittled her concerns about the butterfly effect (later acts like it's silly to tape the play and bring it back, later brings up _Back to the Future,_ which is an example of the butterfly effect), and racism (come on, you still look like a white man, Doctor)--also, he was weird about basically telling her to get in the bed without giving her room to and immediately invoking Rose. Don't get me wrong. I do like a lot of this episode. David Tennant is on the London stage in _Macbeth_ right about now. "Get sectioned": get put away for being delusional/mentally ill.

I love how the doctor is in bed with a very beautifull woman and he is still thinking about his ex companion, it's pretty adorable ahah I loved Rose, the Doctor has a lot of great companions but damn Rose hits different, I don't know why.

I didn't like Martha the first time watching through, mostly because I missed the Doctor/Rose dynamic. But she's great as a companion.

Within 10 minutes of Smith and Jones, I loved Martha, So I love the Shakespear story too. I just don't like the way The Doctor treats Martha in half of the stories.
