The Master of the Revels wasn't just the manager of the Theater, he was a government officer, specifically part of the Royal Court. He would be in charge of overseeing all celebrations, parades, and other public events within all of England, which would also include approving every play that was performed. The witches basically assassinated the Tudor Era equivalent of the Minister of Culture, or something along those lines.

England back then didn't have slavery, nor had they developed a sense of racism based on skin colour. It was just mostly based on where you were from and what religion you were.

Honestly slavery was never much of a prominent thing in mainland England. It was widespread throughout the colonies and dominions, but the slave population in England itself was generally pretty low, and the abolitionist movement actually arose in England sooner than almost anywhere else. Really the bigger problem for Martha, societally, would be that she's a women, rather than that she's black, which I think the episode delved into well.

I had a couple friends from the US during my time at university and a lot of them were surprised how intergrated our cities were as apparently the towns and areas in the US are often segregated by race and wealth.

Honestly, it was just as good as any other Doctor Who episode. If you hated it, then you shouldn't generally like Doctor Who.

I like Let's Kill Hitler. Look up almost any reaction to Let's Kill Hitler. Almost all of them like Let's Kill Hitler. Tons of other people also like Let's Kill Hitler. Either you don't know that many people who watch Doctor Who, or the people you do know are all your friends or family and thus more likely to agree with you.

Being able to rewatch this made me realize that two of David's characters helped make Shakespeare famous and give him the words for some of the greats works of literature. The first one is The Doctor shown in this episode and the second is Crowley from Good Omens.

The Time Lords actually altered the laws of physics early in the history of the universe to make magic impossible. However, things like psychic powers and reality-manipulating equations remained due to having some kind of scientific basis. Practically there's no real difference, but the semantic difference is what matters. Maybe compare it to how in Marvel the powers of people like Thor and Doctor Strange are called magic, but the powers of people like Magneto and the Silver Surfer are called science, even though they're sort of indistinguishable in a way. In the classic series the 7th Doctor encounters beings from another universe who do use legitimate magic.

This series aired in April 2007 months before the finale Harry Potter book was released and J.K Rowling is a fan of Doctor Who. So I don't think she mined the references in this episode. The showrunner at the time wanted J.K to write the Christmas episode that year but I think she was too busy to do it. I hope one day she will do an episode it would be interesting what she would do.

Fun fact: Apparently in 2008, Russel Davis (the Doctor Who showrunner) wanted to do a crossover episode of Harry Potter and Doctor Who for a Christmas special. It would have involved a space bug attaching itself to J.K. Rowling, and turning some of the fictional creatures/villains alive from the. Harry Potter books. The Doctor would have teamed up with J.K. Rowling to stop and collect all of the now living creatures. Apparently Rowling turned down the opportunity of writing the episode and was not keen to the idea of acting. David Tennant also was not into the idea for the episode. Because of that, the idea for the episode was discarded

You have to remember regarding the race thing, that although black people, or non-white European people, weren't that common, they were by no means unknown in England in the 16th century. Especially not in London, which was a major port, and would have had visitors from all over the known (to them) world.. And slavery wasn't legal within the British Isles post 1200 for anybody. It happened in the Empire, much to our shame, but not here.

Rowling was asked at two different times to write and then appear in an episode. She couldn't write in 2005, even though she thought it would've been interesting, because she was still writing the sixth book. Originally the 2008 Christmas special would've starred JK Rowling and had her imagination become real.
