It's not a reboot, it's a return. This is the same Doctor who was on TV in the 60's 70's and the 80's movie. This is the 9th version of the same person. He dies, his body changes. Same memories, new body, new personality for the most part. This 2005 return was a gamble because DW hadn't been on TV for a long time. They do a full intro for new watchers to the universe.

Even the BBC call it a reboot
@OldManFerdiad8 ай бұрын
@@Josh-wu7kz it's helpful for a lot of new viewers to know that here "reboot" is being used (by the BBC or others) to refer to bringing the show back, revitalising it, making it completely accessible to new viewers but still being a continuation or sequel to the series that aired from 1963-89. Some people use "reboot" strictly to mean that it's a do-over, or a brand new version, (the Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies are a reboot following the Toby Maguire movies might be a useful example of this usage), so a little disambiguation can aid understanding. Same as they say NuWho Season 5 is a 'soft-reboot' or the latest special is another 'soft-reboot': it's not discounting the previous material, but it's a good jumping on point.

Eccleston and Ncuti's Doctors are at entirely different points of their lives so the difference in their personalities is to be expected. You'll learn a lot more about that with Eccleston's Doctor going forward.
@bauwoman29 ай бұрын
Totally agree with this comment. Also, the actor portrays the doctor, but it is the writers that set the tone and character. The actors don't have as much control over the personalities as you might think. So lots of Whovians look at who was in charge of the series and who was writing the episode when they are critiquing. Whovians also seem to enjoy arguing and complaining about overall plots and whether a storyline improves or ruins the franchise. So when you are picking a favorite doctor, in a sense you are not just picking the actor but also picking the people in charge at the time. Have fun!

In 1989 it was decided to give the series a break, in 1996 a relaunch was attempted in the form of a film and in 2005 again with this series that still continues. Everything is considered canon, counting the Doctors of the classic series and the one in the movie, the first Doctor of this series is considered the Ninth Doctor.

Great to see new reactors to the show. First off it's a revival of the show so its technically season 27.. (we now have 3 series 1's which is confusing😀). Also this is the 9th doctor. All the lore will be explained as you go along. It's a family show (8-80) but originally started as an educational show focused on kids (except some of the things they did in the early days wouldn't get on family tv now). The first episode went out on November 23rd 1963 - hence the Kennedy refererence and was repeated a week later to give it a second chance. It's not really true that the companion(s) do most of the work - they're to be the substitute audiance (you know, 'what's that doctor?' so thst we get the explanation). They were recasting the profile of the female companion to be more proactive which i think is why Rose has such a presence in this epusode (the bronze is the bronze award at a schoolgynastics competition). Btw episodes 4 & 5 irritate most adults but don't let that stop you - episode 6 is a classic episode.

Rose said “I’ve got the bronze” as in bronze medal for gymnastics in school. So she could swing on the rope (chain) and knock the anti plastic into the plastic monster. That monster goes back to about 1970 in Doctor Who. I watched in the mid to late 70s. The Doctor is always the same person even though he has some degree of personality change when he regenerates (when fatally wounded his body regenerates into a “new” person… even though he is the same person). This doctor (the ninth) is much younger than ncuti’s Doctor and as time goes on you will understand more. The doctor is alien and sometimes he can act very alien even though he looks human. The show is usually written on two levels… one for the 8 year olds watching and one level for the grownups. It can be scary for kids but so are fairy tales.

You are so valid re: Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor being more fun and caring-the Doctor takes, in my opinion, entirely too long for a being so old to grow the fuck up. They’re deeply traumatized so like, absolutely deserves some grace, but man does it take them a long time to start actually healing 😭 Eccleston’s Doctor starts in a low place, I think, very very validly, and he does get more hopeful-but from there, Tennant’s Doctor is a downwards spiral, and Matt Smith’s is rock bottom for a long time. It’s not until Capaldi that the Doctor stops running away quite so much, actually starts taking accountability for what they do, considers whether they’re even a good person, etc. That’s my current understanding of them, anyway!! I’m rewatching from the beginning right now, too. It’s a very complex character, and I’m excited to see what y’all come to think of them!!

So excited to see your reactions to one off my all-time favourite shows! Really glad you started with the 2005 series. No spoilers, you don't need to know anything about the 1963-1989 run to watch 2005- as the production team knew - and hoped - there would be new viewers and explains everything as we go. So anything mysterious now is mysterious on purpose! The Doctor's travelling companions often serve as an 'audience substitute' discovering things as the same time as the viewer. Also, much as I like Rose, she's definitely a flawed (therefore realistic) character: although it's played for laughs I think that Rose not noticing that Mickey has turned into a less than realistic plastic copy shows how wrapped up in her own stuff she is, how she's sort of taking Mickey for granted. As for the Doctor blowing things up, he certainly doesn't care about property damage, but he makes sure he gets Rose out of the Department Store first. He has a contingency with the antiplastic to kill the Nestene Consciousness, but again gives it a chance to leave without loss of life (well, other than poor Wilson the custodian).

Quite often companions of the Doctor fall in love with him… in some cases to an unhealthy worshipful extent. During the original 1963 - 1989 run, a companion was a little too inspired by the Doctor’s example and lost his life trying to save the world. Then we the audience find out that the catastrophe the companion tried to prevent is a part of history that needed to happen. The ironic part is the Doctor isn’t trying to be suave, charismatic or seductive, he is just being himself. The Doctor does care about regular humans and especially about his companions. In a few cases, the audience is allowed to see that the supposed unrequited love of a companion towards the Doctor isn’t always so unrequited. I sometimes say the Companions should really be called the Doctor’s Disciples. They quite often drop everything in their lives to follow him into that little blue box. Some are gone for months, some for years and sadly some never make it back at all. This is a recurring theme throughout the 60 year run of the show so it’s not a spoiler. Hope you enjoy the episodes to come.

Hi, new subscriber here from the UK! Glad you enjoyed your first Doctor Who story of the 2005 reboot! As you will come to see with new versions of the Doctor (and those from classic Who), the Doctor can be whimsical, funny, silly but he also has a serious side and is very moralistic and always on the side of what’s good and right! As season 1 progresses, you will learn more about this particular Doctor, and what happened to him during the Time War (which ended before he came to Earth and met Rose), and you can see how battle scarred and lost he is from it. His journey with Rose starts his healing process and makes him feel more “human” again, and in turn the Doctor shows Rose the wonder of different worlds and what it is to really “live!” So in that context I wouldn’t say the Doctor is smug or smarmy, but being with Rose enables him to regain a bit of confidence in himself and marvel at the universe again, seeing it all through Rose’s eyes! I don’t think subsequent Doctor actors after Eccleston could have portrayed the grief and hurt as well as he did, and for that reason Chris was an inspired choice to play this first new Doctor in this reboot series! In the 15th Doctors case, things transpire during his predecessor’s time (Doctor 14), which allows this new Doctor to clear the decks of all the angst and guilt, and free himself up to enjoy himself again! If you take it in that context, you can see why Doctors 9 and 15 are so different!

It's interesting Rekkai points out there's a political angle on the alien threat, insofar as it can be read as a satire on our world's dependence on plastic. Bang on: the aliens in this episode come from the original series, having made two prior appearances in Doctor Who in 1970 and 1971, created by Robert Holmes, usually considered the GOAT of original series writers. The political satire angle on plastic use was very much part of the original idea. Russell used these aliens because he thought they were perfect for re-introducing Who just in narrative terms, so this political angle was kind of an inheritance from the 70s that came along with them. Russell really runs with it though. It seems to me he writes Doctor Who with a strong sense of political satire of his own, as I think you will see later in this series when we get to satirical takes on, for example, modern politicians, war, and the power of news media.

I’ve been watching Doctor Who for over half my life now and I’ll say you’re in for a ride. This episode is the beginning of what the fandom refers to as NuWho and a perfect place to start. From this episode you’ll notice that yes, this doctor - fresh out of war has this attitude but at the core the doctor is the same person but it depends what you’ll get out of them wherever they are in their story. You’ll get attitude, arrogance, rage, but you’ll get everything else too. One thing about being The Doctor, it requires range. You noticed with Ncuti, his first episode he’s an outgoing, optimistic sort on that first meeting with Ruby compared to Rose but he’s got time to get there. Also Whovians have a fantastic ability to supply information without needing to divulge big spoilers so this is the fandom to ask but with 60 years of content across multiple mediums don’t get too stuck on a fixed set canon, things change and in cases time can be rewritten.

RE: Ncuti, the Doctor is on a journey. The Doctor's been through some stuff and, as a result, has evolved here and there.

The show was orginally made in the 60s to be an educational tv show, teaching science and history. They noticed about 6-8 years in that the metaphysical episodes were getting better ratings, so they just leaned into that ever since. The Doctor as a character has definitely a different personality between the 60's and now. I have a personal project looking into this :)

Did not know that. Interesting!

@@nupefromdaville yeah! The first missing serial (episodes of the same story) was about Marco Polo 😁 there are also around 97 missing episodes in the classics.

Every Doctor is different. That is not a shift, every one has a different character trait. This Doctor has reasons to be a bit extreme, and Ncuti's Doctor does not because of things they both have gone through at different points of time. I don't think it's fair to say that based on one episode of each.
@deemo78689 ай бұрын
So true. Each actor brings something different. The storylines evolve. I am enjoying the current Doctor, but, at this point it is too early to judge Ncuti Gatwa,. So, excluding him, David Tennant is my favorite. I liked Peter Capaldi, also.

that other guy makes no sense. Of course Syntell has not watched it, but that dude having watched two episodes assumed that all doctor should be the same lol. Without even knowing what Christopher Eccleston's Doctor has gone through@@deemo7868

You guys just might make me rewatch Doctor. Can’t wait till The Empty Child. That was the episode that got me started. That and Blink.

The essential core of the character is constant, however the 'outer clothing' characterization - the personality - can vary quite substantially. Also memories between incarnations can be sublimated or vague, some things carry over that are most important, some however get lost. The Doctor is an imperfect and sometimes wayward hero, just as the TARDIS itself which has the same faults. The reference to JFK is significant in that the very first story, An Unearthly Child, was broadcast on the 23rd November 1963, the day after his assassination in Texas. The Autons - the plastic creatures - were first shown in the four part serialized adventure - as they were all back in the classic era - called Spearhead From Space and was the very first story which starred Jon Pertwee as the third incarnation of The Doctor. Christopher Eccleston is the ninth.

18:17 Once a person has travelled and fought beside the Doctor it totally changes their lives and perspective. Many can’t go back to a regular life after they have saved the world multiple times. Nuff said.

- This is not a reboot, but continuation of the adventures of the past doctors. While there will be quite a few references (and reoccurring characters and enemies), you can watch this without having seen the old show from the 60s. - The original series was planned as an educational show for a younger audience, wherein the Dcotor travels to different eras of primarily Earth's past, but it grew beyond that. - There are some spin-offs, targeted towards differents age groups (The Sarah Jane Adventures => kids; Torchwood => adults; Class => teens)

Ahhh ok. This is a great continuation so far.

Jaded Doctor from the time war, this is the 9th Doctor and his personality is moulded by his experiences. The 8th Doctor (Paul McGann) was in the 90's movie, 7th Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) ended the run in 1989 which started with the 1st Doctor (William Harnel, later also played by Richard Hurndall and David Bradley) in 1963. Each incarnation has a different personality. This is a soft reboot and continues the original series (the shop dummies in this episode are a call back to stories in the 1970's). The 60th Anniversary specials before Ncuti's first full ep (the xmas special you have seen) were a second soft reboot. I would say you are doing this is the right order for you guys as the 1963 series could be hard going for anyone not 1. British or 2. alive in the 60s... and the BBC don't actually have all the episodes any more. I jumped on with the 4th & 5th Doctor and the 1st - 3rd Doctor stuff is a little hard going for me due to the massive gulf in production eras. I would personally recommend watching the 2005 soft reboot through until you catch up. Then between the "new" season 1 on Disney + (with Ncuti) and the 2024 xmas special, sample some of the best of the original series - maybe a couple of stories from each doctor just to see if there are runs you do want to see as each Doctor is quite distinct. The community will suggest epsiodes when you are ready but expect things like "The ", "The 10th Planet", "Genesis of the ", "Caves of Androzani" and "Remembrance of the ". Episode 6 of Chris Ecclestone's run will fill in the redacted bits for you :)

Small correction no one else seems to be making, this came out in 2005 not 2006. Without going too deep into stuff not revealled yet from your perspective, the Doctor mentions having fought in "The War", that was very recent for him, effectively he's a shell shocked veteran, which is part of why his is the way he is.
@Stuart_Cox19699 ай бұрын
Stick with it guys, you're gonna get so invested in one way or another. Ncuti is the Disney+ Doctor, the show is now a reboot of the reboot.

Ah... Ms Tyler... such a character, but the actress is a sweetheart. To be fair, this doctor hasn't mellowed from some things, yet.

I am personally very happy you guys are watching the doctor, because it was my favorite show at the time and growing up. The 4th is my doctor and yeah he's a bit full of himself but it's definitely not false bravado. The special effects are sometimes campy (mainly as homage to it's roots), but they excel at practical effects. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did 🖖😎👍

7:08 This version of the Doctor is fresh from a war that so he is a bit raw. But suffice it to say the Doctor has seen some things. Also as a Time Lord, the Doctor’s perception of reality is much different than normal people.

He actually encountered the mannequin alien before in the 70s and they look a great deal the same except for the alien controlling them. Most likely he came up with the anti-plastic after his previous battle.

Something that Doctor Who did/does, that is so, so smart, is the way they set up regeneration. Each new Doctor, while the same being at their core, is really an entirely new person. This allows each new actor the freedom to really interpret the character in their own way without the expectation of being an exact replica of their predecessor and I believe it’s what has enabled the show to run as long as it has. In fact, some of my favorite episodes of each regeneration is their first, where we get to watch the new Doctor basically meet themselves. Now, while Eccleston is one of my least favorites, his Doctor is crucial to reintroducing us to the world of Doctor Who. He effectively and efficiently gives us all of the information we need without having to go forward with them on this journey, without having to watch Classic Who. He really sets the stage in this season for all of the Doctors that come after him to thrive.

Welcome to a wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey rabbit hole. Look forward to seeing more of your reactions. Doctor Who is overall a top-notch series that ended in 1989, had a couple of specials and was revived officially in 2005, not 2006, and has run since with only a couple of years off-air (one because of Covid). The special effects get better too. I think the show really showcases it's writing with the 2-parter coming after a few more episodes that takes place during the London Blitz in WW2. This Doctor is generally known as the 9th Doctor and has a bit of a chip on his shoulder because...well, I can't tell you (spoilers!) but it has something to do with what's happened just prior to his arrival in this episode - something we learn more about over the course of many YEARS of the show, learning a bit more slowly. Almost every Doctor since the beginning of the show has had different personalities from their other selves.
