This show just gets better and better, I guarantee you'll be scared by some episodes, cry with others and be shocked by even more.... the effects just get better and better (this was 2005 remember and just look at the scorpion king in the 2nd mummy movie, made around this time and with all of Hollywood's budget... terrible!) As the seasons progress you'll get virtually star wars levels of world building.... such a great show.... wait and see.... ps stick with it (u may find 1 or 2 episodes less gripping, especially in the 1st few seasons as they were finding their mojo) it's worth it, and many youtubers from the states end up massive fans...

smkfet... The new series stands by itself, I think trying to contextualise things by bringing up the old show might be a bit like explaining the punchline of a joke to someone.

Also the secne between the doctor and rose her mum is the best for someone on the ace spectrum
@smkfet Жыл бұрын
@@dogblessamerica I disagree. There are a lot of things in the new show, the Nestine Consciousness is a huge example, where the modern show runners just went off in a whole different direction and left the history in the past. Likewise there are several times where The Doctor will reference the long noble history of something, but actually it's all in universe and never played out on TV in the first 26 seasons.

Doctor Who fact: the pilot episode premiered on the same day as the JFK assassination. It had terrible views for obvious reasons, so they decided to show it a second time (which was apparently not a common practice). So one single decision saved a 60 year long franchise
@alanbeaumont4848 Жыл бұрын
And I was lucky enough to catch that episode (aged 5). Fun Fact: After the assassination many adults here in London feared there wouldn't be a next Saturday, although it was not quite as creepy as the atmosphere during the '62 Cuban Crisis. Another thing that saved Doctor Who, ironically was the Daleks, the creator of the show Sydney Newman was against them because he didn’t want robots or bug eyed monsters, because Doctor Who was originally supposed to educate children about history and space, but the producer Verity Lambert went against his wishes and the Daleks proved to be a massive success. If she didn’t do that, Doctor Who may not have been the success it is today and probably wouldn’t have made it out of the 60s

One thing most people forget. This show started as a children's show. it tries to maintain that "style". Some adults mistake that for being "cheesy" and under produced. It is all part of it's charm. The special part of Doctor Who is the storytelling....(there is usually a moral of the story) and the relationship between the Doctors and their companions. Their companions are there to represent the audience. Hope you find the Doctor interesting. Again focus on the story and relationships..... not the special effects.

DW has a silliness I took 2 rewatching of this "'first" episode to accomodate, but when it clicked, my mind went with the flow, and it's my favorite show to this day.
@donny1960 Жыл бұрын
@preceyeseseyeght5888 Disagree. So did the writers and the show runner. So maybe if you have a Tardis you can go back in time and convince them otherwise. The scene was cute. It was not suppose to follow the laws of physics. It was just meant to be cute. And it was. Also if there was no "trash bin" . Then Micky would not have been replaced. And he would not have had to be rescued by Rose and a whole lot of the plot and future references would not have happened. So it played it's part well.

The doctor's speech about the turn of the earth gives me chills every. Single. Time. That was the exact moment I fell inlove with Eccleston back in 2005. This season is not my favorite, but damn I love this doctor. So refreshing and nice to see a reactor who have absolutely no idea what's going on (yes, he's an alien 😅). Hope you'll like it and join us in the whovian family!

I’m sure it’s already been said, but the way to get the most out of your Doctor Who experience is to simply BUY IN. It’s ridiculous, goofy, it’s camp, and it has SO MUCH HEART. When you let go expectations of serious modern scifi and embrace it for what it is, it just opens up in front of you. Enjoy this wonderful series! Can’t wait for you to reach season 4 ❤❤

Sometimes even the stories suck. Its the character of the main protagonist that makes it a great show. He is such a mass of contradictions, going from calling the entire human race idiots to saying we are brilliant. Talking perfect sense one moment, then going off on some technobabble that makes no sense. And you have no idea if he is joking, or so intelligent that he's talking over our heads, or maybe just a bit crazy. Or a combination of all three. Even other Time Lords think he's a bit nuts.
@kathyastrom1315 Жыл бұрын
Cheesy special effects and low budget scenery have always been part of Doctor Who, going back to the black &white days when the set’s walls would literally wobble as the actors ran past, being chased by the latest big bad, as usual.

beans on toast is a very popular breakfast food in the uk, it doesn't use the type of beans in like.. americans typically think of. it's hienz tomato flavoured beans, and it wierd's out people from outside the uk, but it is genuinely pretty decent. also i love the way the way the show really feels like it embodies each era it's in. going back to the old show in the 60's all the way to now, it's so similar across its history keeping a lot of the same lore, and formula's and ideas, and themes. but, with it embodying each era it's in, and for a show the fandom often refers to as "new who" the revival really has gotten so dated in it's early years. the first series (in the uk the words series and season are kinda interchangeable but to differentiate the old and new show we use season for old who and series for new who) really does feel the most like that, since it didn't have a captive audience yet, so had to be as 2005 as physically possible to get attention. which makes it a great time capule (ironically) for mid 2000's British culture. the same way as the Jon Pertwee era in the old show might be considered a great reorientation of early 70's British culture.

Believe it or not, this show has some of my favorite episodes of tv. It's really a terrific series. One of the most diverse, as it literally can go anywhere in time and space. I think a lot of people don't realize this was made by public television, so they didn't have the same budget at US network tv. But the budget and production quality did increase over time as the show became more popular.

I love that you point that out. The biggest budgets don't necessarily mean better storytelling and excitement. I am an older Doctor Who fan, having grown up in the 70s and 80s. Those creepy ass mannequins were a throwback to the classic show monsters called the Autons. When I was watching this in 2005, I almost wept hearing the TARDIS for the first time. It was all truly amazing! That one shot... the long shot from Rose's apartment building to the street corner where the TARDIS is parked... that's a filming style that's not often used i the USA. In US movies and television shows, there are typically fifteen seconds or fewer between cuts, but when those single-shot moves are done right, the result is fantastic. Last note: Although adults enjoy the show, too, it is targeted for the 11-15 market, thus the burping trashcan.

It's important to bear in mind that the BBC weren't sure if the revival would be successful, so they didn't give this much of a budget. The visual quality improves greatly in later seasons. Likewise, they took a while to find the right tone for the show, so it got less cheesy too.

15:18 - remember the quote from MIB, where K tells J "There's always an Arquillian Battle Cruiser, or a Corillian Death Ray, or an intergalactic plague that is about to wipe out all life on this miserable little planet, and the only way these people can get on with their happy lives is that they DO NOT KNOW ABOUT IT!" Similar setup with Doctor Who. There is always some sort of problem on a similar scale that needs to be solved, and the Doctor has to do it. Why? He's The Doctor. He heals, but he will also cut away diseased tissue to make sure what is left is healthy. He will give advice on how to get healthy, but he will also tell you what you need to know.

wierd british thing i noticed here. Ta-ra is a welsh and northern english phrase that's mainly popular in northern wales and liverpool, since both regions have heavy irish influence. but the term comes from a shorterned version of an irish phrase meaning "take care" and whilst it's spread across the country over the years to the point that most people will understand what you mean (similar to words like kecks and scran which where also popularised in liverpool before spreading to the rest of the country) it's intresting to see that a welsh writer wrote a southern character saying it, when the south is one of the few regions where it's still not really that popular a phrase. also second british thing sicne i saw your look of slight confusion when rose said "serving chips"... chips means fries in the uk, but usually specifically the thick type that you'd call "steak fries" in america.
