Pete is one heck of a guy, what he did was very brave. He wasn’t a superhero. He wasn’t some special forces operator. Pete was just a regular man. His arc in this episode reminds me of a quote from the first episode of Farscape “…each man gets the chance to be his own kind of hero. Your time’ll come and when it does, watch out. Chances are, it’ll be the last thing you ever expected.” Bravo to Pete when his time came he stepped up!

I always assumed the vase was shown breaking because Dr Who is a pre-watershed show and because it's pre-watershed, there is a limit on showing gore/blood/broken bones etc. The vase breaking represents Pete being injured and that he's so broken he can't be fixed and is going to die. I love your discussions on Doctor Who. So interesting to hear other viewpoints. I find these early series of nuwho, where RTD was in charge, have episodes like this which hit me hard emotionally. Some of the later series are more 'clever' and the plots twist and turn. But RTD can make me care deeply about his characters and make me cry.

This was a beautiful conversation between two fathers that needed to be had. Thank you guys for recognizing the importance of this episode for a character like Rose Something that's not too well known is that during the filming for this episode, Christopher Ecclestons' own father had fallen quite ill so he couldn't be there as much for filming as he wanted to be with him. Hes mentioned at a few Cons that this episode was his favorite from this season because of what he was going through
@FiresCollide8 ай бұрын
Rose says something to the Doctor that seems spiteful at the time when they're fighting, but it's actually really important to who he is: the Doctor is really lonely and he NEEDS human companions around him. Humans keep him grounded; they remind him of his own compassion. The Doctor is a thousand years old - more. He's seen everything, done everything, watched the genocide of his entire race. When he goes without human friendship for too long, he gets untethered from his humanity.

The episode was already hitting, but the conversation y’all had about parents hit me hard. My mom passed a couple years ago, a few months before I turned 30. My youngest brother was 13. I think a lot about all the things in my life she’s going to miss. There’s really no preparing for it. If I were in Rose’s position where she could save her dad, I would probably make the same choice. I don’t think I could follow logic and rational thinking in that moment.

When I was like, 10 when it was airing, I told my dad I never wanted to watch the show again cause the Reapers scared me so much. Then I came back next week. Ecelston often gets passed over by some fans. His era is rarely talked about as someoens favorite, but for me he will always be my Doctor. They're all the Doctor, even the ones that aren't canon anymore between 8 and 9, but Chris will always be my Doctor. Working class, kind, funny, cowardly but compasionate. Its the era I'm fond of, and I don't dislike a single episode, I find something to love in each.

Peter Davison was the first Doctor I was particularly aware of but I think his and Colin Baker's eras were more of the hide-behind-the-sofa period for me, although I have fairly strong memories of the Five Doctors special, so Sylvester McCoy was really my first doctor. agree w/ your 2nd paragraph. he made me love the doctor and he has such a special place in my heart for that. i'm not one for television shows so getting me to love a TV character is a big deal (for me), and he was able to do it. I think he had the best episodes as he was the one to introduce all of us newbies to who the doctor is, and Eccleston nailed it. I was able to feel his pain, wonder, anger, and joy; it all showed so well on his face (i'm not good at identifying many emotions through facial expressions).

This ep is so hard to watch, but so good. My dad was 48 when I was born, and was only 50 when he died. I'd give anything for the chance for me and daughter to go back in time to meet him. Pete was a fuck up, but became a hero.
@michaelfinlay63418 ай бұрын
Had a thought about the vase. Not only is it a metaphor for the immutable laws of time, but it mostly be one for the Doctor. After what he did in the Time War, he is a broken, broken man. He didn't have to take on Rose, but it's not like the TARDIS, herself, alone, could fix him. He has to have companions. He's a literal god in all but name. They have to keep him grounded. The Doctor unleashed would be too great and terrible to behold. And he knows that.

On my rewatches, I usually I have to skip this episode, as it is a difficult one for me. I lost my dad when I was in my early twenties, and this episode makes my loss feel fresh all over again. But I enjoyed hearing your reaction to it, and your insights were so deep and illuminating. What Rekai (sorry if I misspelled your name!) said about preparing your children for your inevitable passing really resonated with me. I think a big reason I have strugged for over 13 years to come to terms with my own dad's passing is that I wasn't properly prepared for that loss. I was living at home, struggling with depression, and my father especially was a crutch for me. Anything difficult, he took care of it. Once he was gone, I foundered. It took me years to get back on my feet, and only this past year have I actually dealt with all my feelings around that time. For years I actually had a fantasy, imagining I would meet the Doctor and go back to my dad's last night on Earth. No accidents to prevent, but I know I would try my damnedest to talk him out of it. Basically, I would make the same choice as Rose, even knowing the possible consequences, because how could you not try?

16:16 LMAO!! Yes, she is, OMG! But I take your point, how many of us would make the right choice given the circumstance. I don't have children, but from the other side, my mom died when I was 15, and here I am 33 years later and I would like to think I'd make the right choice, to not save her, but OMG I would be broken by that choice. So much of my life would have unfolded differently, some people I never would have met who I now cannot imagine life without... With hindsight I can see all the how her being here would have woven a whole new tapestry of events, and I'm not sure it would have all been to the good. I owe part of who I am, my compassion, my strength, to getting over that loss, knowing how to help others... If anything I'd want to go back and fake her death and bring her to the present and hope the sacred timeline didn't break! I appreciate how much thought you put into your review, you both seem like really good people to know, I'm really glad I found your channel! Doctor WHO can hit you in the feels sometimes hard.
