"She's alive?" "She's Nosferatu." "She's Italian?" Fun Fact: The ship's name "The Demeter" is consistent with Bram Stoker's novel. Casting Notes Fact: Steven Weber and Amy Yasbeck both co-starred in the highly popular Wings (1990). Parody Fact: Much of the dialogue from the original classic Dracula (1931) picture is repeated here and spoofed. This includes the film's star Leslie Nielsen doing a spoof-impersonation of the famed Bela Lugosi. What Script Fact: For the scene in which Harker puts a stake in Lucy's (Lynette Anthony) heart, Mel Brooks didn't tell Steven Weber that he would be covered in 200 gallons of blood, so that his reaction would appear natural. This led him to ad-lib: "She's dead enough." Deep Cut Reference Fact: The character of the gypsy woman Madame Ouspenskaya, who was portrayed by Mel Brooks' wife actress Anne Bancroft, was named after Maria Ouspenskaya, who played the character of Maleva in both The Wolf Man (1941) and Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man (1943). As Renfield (Peter MacNicol) arrives at the hospital at the end of the film, he turns, holds up his hands and laughs exactly as Herman Munster does in the credits for the original TV show The Munsters (1964) starring Fred Gwynne.

While this does have a few elements of 1992's "Bram Stoker's Dracula", it is more set up for and is spoofing Universal's "Dracula" from 1931. The opening scene is reminiscent of 1931 Dracula's opening scene with Carla Laemmle, niece of then studio owner Carl Laemmle (pronounced as Lem-Lay) Also in the 1931 Dracula, the scene in the town is there as well as Renfield entering the castle with the giant spider's web. For some reason no one knows is that in the original there are armadillos rummaging around in the castle ruins though it could have been because using real rats at that time on film would have been seen as being in bad taste. Renfield cutting himself, the ship, Dt. Seward's home and sanitarium with Carfax Abbey next door, the opera scene, etc are all elements from the 1931 version. If you've never seen it, you really should give it a watch so you'll be in on the majority of the gags in this movie. One of my favorite scenes in this spoof is when Renfield, falling down the stairs cries out in vowels with every hit A! E! I! O! U!...though the last one comes out as more of an ooo, then when he hits bottom he shouts Y! (Whyyyyyy), LOL! Leslie Nielsen is very obviously imitating Bela Lugosi's voice and cadence of speech. Peter MacNicol was perfectly cast as Renfield as he portrays Dwight Frye's character so convincingly. The last scene with Dracula being destroyed by the dawn breaking has elements from several "Dracula" movies. 1931's isn't really represented though. Hammer's 1958 "Horror of Dracula" and 1979's Universal remake of "Dracula" starring Frank Langella as the Count being two it reminds me of. Mel Brooks' line "She will become one herselffff!" is reminiscent of Kenneth Mars' "Young Frankenstein" burgomaster having to repeat himself to be understood. Amy Yasbeck, will remind most Mel Brooks fans of her portrayal of Maid Marion in his "Robin Hood: Men In Tights", from 1993, :) "Can you explain zat!?" reminds me of Terri Garr's character "Inga" in Young Frankenstein as well with her put-on Germanic accent--"It seems to be coming from behind zee bookcase". The mirror is supposed to reflect a person's soul and since vampires have no soul they cast no reflection in a mirror. That's just old school vampirism 101 :) I do hope you get to see the 1931 Dracula. It's only about 68 minutes long so it's a quick watch, but it's where most of the things modern people associate with vampires came from. From Lugosi's natural voice to his widow's peak hairline. When someone say's "I vant to drink your blood" they invariably imitate Lugosi's voice...even The Count on Sesame Street and Count Chocula are loosely patterned after him, :) Funny thing is, he only played Dracula on the silver screen twice although he played other vampires in other movies as well and played Dracula many times on the stage. His first portrayal of the Count being of course the 1931 Dracula and the second being in the 1948 comedy of "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein", which to me is also a "must watch" film.

I feel that this movie is WAY underappreciated! My friend Sara and I used to watch Mel Brooks movies all the time, and this was one of our favorites!!! I still think of random quotes from this regularly. I see raspberries at the store, and I think of that scene with Renfield! My friend Sara passed away about 9 years ago, so this is a wonderful call back to our friendship 💜

The 100th like on a classic comedy reaction?!? Hell yeah! It’s awesome to see so many obscure reactions from your channel. I wish more reaction channels did random films instead of JUST following trends! Classic comedy reaction suggestion I don’t see many people react to is “Empire Records” starring a young Liv Tyler. Takes place completely in a record shop in the 90’s during one single day. It’s so funny, just like this film!

Fun review and reaction. As far as how tied Renfield is to Dracula it kinda depends on what version of Dracula you are looking at. In the book Dracula and Renfield have a connection nut it's never explained how, vs say the Bela Lugosi film which this film borrows from a bit to, it's Renfield who goes to Transylvania and is put under Dracula's power. Hell there are some Dracula films like Christopher Lee's Horror of Dracula that just do their own thing with story.

Young Frankenstein started it all. other movies to watch: Spacballs (spoof of star wars), Robin Hood: Men In Tights (spoof of the Robin Hood legend but namely the Kevin Costner version Prince of Thieves) and History of the World Part 1. Most of his movies, he has some roles. Peter MacNicol (renfield) also appeared in another macabre movie Addams Family Value as the head camps counselor Gary Granger. Mel Brooks has also produced some well known non comedy movies. name The Elephnt Man

Oh, one more thing...Lyceum is pronounced as Lie-See-Um. It's significance in the film stems from the fact that Bram Stoker worked at the Lyceum theater in London when he wrote Dracula. It's rumored that he loosely based the Count on his boss, Henry Irving, a big-name actor in Victorian London. Dracula had an official reading at the Lyceum for purposes of copywrite and it was said that Irving passed through as the novel was being read and intoned one word...DREADFUL!, before leaving the room.

Well, in the case of "Lyceum" the pronunciation rather depends on which language you prefer. The original Greek name "Λύκειον" would be pronounced "Lýkeion" whereas in German, where it's spelt "Lyzeum", we pronounce it [transcription for English speakers] "Lüh-tsay-oom". 🙂
@Rebel9668
@Rebel9668 2 ай бұрын
@@tubekulose Not in the context of where they were talking about, it isn't. They meant the Lyceum theater in Victorian London. Stoker worked there, under his boss, Henry Irving, who himself was a kind of vampire, though not the blood drinking kind. There was a reading of Stoker's "Dracula" at the Lyceum for purposes having to do with copyright and during the reading, Irving was noted to have passed through and intoned a single word, "Dreadful", before walking out the door.

So Peter MacNicol (dude playing Renfield) is doing a fantastic impression of Dwight Frye who played Renfield in the 1931 Dracula (with one with Bela Lugosi). Also if you've never seen Young Frankenstein, it was Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder doing a parody of Frankenstein, it's honestly not an unfaithful adaptation of the book lol.
