Jessica to Chani. “So you say now,” Chani said. She glanced across the room at the tall princess. “Do you know so little of my son?” Jessica whispered. “See that princess standing there, so haughty and confident: They say she has pretensions of a literary nature. Let us hope she finds solace in such things; she’ll have little else.” A bitter laugh escaped Jessica. “Think on it, Chani: that princess will have the name, yet she’ll live as less than a concubine-never to know a moment of tenderness from the man to whom she’s bound. While we, Chani, we who carry the name of concubine-history will call us wives.”

The reason Gurney was making such light work of the Harkonnens is that he is regarded to be one of the greatest living warriors in the universe, He is a legend in his own lifetime. One of the major reasons the emperor colluded with the Harkonnens to destroy the Atreides is because he was afraid of the Atreides military strength, under the training of Gurney and Duncan the Atreides military force was becoming more formidable than even the emperors own Sardukar.
@richlisola1Ай бұрын
Shields cannot be used in the Open Desert because they draw the sandworms. Hence why the Fremen do not use shields, and why they are not adept at dueling shielded foes. Fremen also use firearms more so than the Sardaukar, because in the desert a man on the ground cannot turn on his shield.
@DeusVult-q3fАй бұрын
In the Books Sardaukar were using firearms against Fremen in the fights, also even Rabban killed 1 worm with high explosives. Fight should have been far more difficult in the movie. They did Sardaukar dirty in this movie. They should have been difficult challenge for Paul and Fremen.
@richlisola1Ай бұрын
@@DeusVult-q3f I agree. The Fedaykin were superior fighters in their own environment. But The Sardaukar were almost as good-Their battles would’ve been hard fought. That said, we only witnessed one ambush against the Sardaukar in Part 1, and the last battle of Arrakean in Part 2. At that stage it was a total surprise because The Emperor underestimated Maud’dib, plus no one thought the Fremen had access to nukes to breach the Shield Wall. Most of the battles were Fremen ambushes against Harkonen forces and spice harvesters.
@LordVolkovАй бұрын
@@DeusVult-q3f The Sardukar still aren't much of a challenge to the Fedaykin because of the Weirding Way in the book, but they are a decent fight for regular Fremen and slaughter 'non-combatants' who wreck Harkonnen troops with self-sacrificing attacks (Rabban rants about them when explaining why 'all Fremen are mad'). It's part of why I thought not using the death of the first Leto 2 was a bad choice, as they could have shown Sardukar vs Fremen when they sack the seitch and how they wiped out the inhabitants. It also makes Paul's line 'execute the Sardukar' hit harder, as he has them butchered like they butchered his son. So much of the context behind powerful lines was lost in this version.

Very nice reaction. I think a lot of people missed the point of Paul taking Princess Irulan as his wife. When he says "she will remain safe" that she is to be a political hostage to keep the emperor under control and legitimize his claim to the throne. That doesn't mean he has forsaken Chani and in the books she understood this, didn't like it, but understood it nonetheless. I do not see him as evil, but pragmatic. He is now trying to become ruler of the known universe, and he can see everything going forward, all possible paths. He knows when anyone will die, when he and Chani and their future children will die and what they will attain in their lives. He has basically become a Godlike figure with that much power. He will be incredibly difficult to plot against or manipulate and that is what the Bene Gesserit feared most of all. Not only is he all powerful, but he controls the single most important commodity in the universe as well and this makes him feared like no other.

"You'd expect him to have a more superior mind..." Glosu 'Beast' Rabban Harkonenn was put in place specifically to brutalize the Fremen, which is part of the Baron's plan in the book - Rabban rules as an idiot tyrant and when the time is right, Feyd is brought in as a benevolent ruler to ease the suffering of the Fremen and gain their favor... Not sure what Denis intended Baron Harkonnen's plan to be since Feyd shows up and continues brutalizing the Fremen 🙃 There is probably a great scene of Bautista decrying the Fremen on the cutting room floor (notice how quickly it cuts after "Fremen are all mad!" - book Rabban goes on a rant about the suicidal Fremen women hurling themselves onto the Harkonnen to open a wedge for the men because he doesn't understand that they would rather die than be subjugated)
@russellward4624Ай бұрын
If I remember the book correctly(it's been a while), that was the Barron's orriginal plan but Paul's campaign was so effective he was forced to abandon it and just went for full scale genocide to secure the spice production.
@LordVolkovАй бұрын
@@russellward4624 That comes at the end of the Baron's adjusted ploy, when he has to look like he's lost control of Arrakis so the Emperor will come to intervene (to then be murdered while he is vulnerable and usurped by Feyd). Paul and the Baron's plans are running in tandem throughout the book and each adapts to the other's machinations as they unveil, only Paul has prescience and can see further than the Baron. Paul also learns about the source of Spice throughout the novel, and his threat to flood the pre-spice masses with water would have killed the next generation of sand worms and brought spice production to a crawl for generations. It's a much more brutal threat than nuking spice fields 😅

'Where's the 💩 going?" The still suit extracts the water from that too 😅 There's a reason they mention 'Fremen scrub their ass with sand' in part 1 (because the fluid is pressed out, but their pants are still full of 💩...) They really don't go into the interior of Fremen life, but there is a whole cultural thing where they live in their stillsuits while out in the desert but wear normal clothes in their sietches because of the way they are designed to keep moisture from escaping, so there is a disrobing and cleansing ritual when they return home.
@dudermcdudeface3674Ай бұрын
The Fremen language is called Chakobsa. It's in the book to some extent, and Frank Herbert developed a bit of it, but the movie went way farther to make it a fully realized spoken language. Btw, the English we hear is supposed to be an imperial lingua franca called Galach. So the local is Chakobsa, and the colonial/imperial is Galach.

People mention shields drawing worms, but when on or among the safety of rocks, shooters would be afraid of accidently hitting each other in a melee and causing a catastrophic explosion.

That only applies to lasguns. Projectile firearms can be safely used in the presence of a shield. But they wouldn’t be very useful unless the projectile could slow itself before shield contact.
@clairealderwood1928Ай бұрын
So pleased to see this! Some answers to your questions (I read the books long ago) a. They can’t use their shields on the dunes as their vibration calls the worms. b. Spice is used in by the Guild Navigators to help them calculate the path for interstellar space travel. So at the beginning when they say “he who controls the spice controls the universe” they mean it literally. c. Eyes turn blue after prolonged exposure to spice. d. The bene gesserit Paul yelled at (Silence!) is his grandmother. Duke Harkonnen r@ped her and she caused him to become diseased and bloated.
@DarthPepisАй бұрын
A) they dont use shields cuz energy weapons impacting on shields create a nuclear explosión that kill everyone including the attacker. Thats why some Harkonen say "shields" and other respond "no!" cuz at the minimal suspition of energy weaponds on the battlefield everyone deactivate their shield (if i remember correctly fremen dont use a lot of energy weapond but they have some too). And thats also why the mayority of the combat is done with melle weapons

If there is anythng "wrong" with these films so far it might be that the power of the spice melange isn't emphasised as much as it could be. There would be NO interstellar travel without the spice. It makes people live much longer livespans. It gives people physical energy. It gives some people mental powers such as precognition. If you take enough, you will actually MUTATE (not seen in the films yet). It is also HIGHLY ADDICTIVE and stopping taking it is fatal. So people will pay anything for spice. The entire galaxy is hooked on it. The entire ecomony is hooked on it.
@RyanCarringtonАй бұрын
Yeah, I've done a bit of a wiki deep dive on that since the watch. They definitely don't put enough emphasis on the hold Spice has on everything. Maybe they'll get more into it later on. Idk. But definitely some interesting stuff they could make more aware to the audience.

The total lack of mentioning the Spacing Guild was also a big negative for me. Controlling the spice, and therefore controlling the Spacing Guild, was one of the main reasons why Paul had so much power and why his interstellar Jihad was successful.

@@RyanCarrington The problem is that the one novel "Dune" has way too much detail to make a film with everything in it. Just like Lord of the Rings. A film will always be an "adaption" and choices have to be made. I think these films are a great adaption and do the best job of keeping the main story going, without too many side quests. Some changes make sense in film terms. You get Christopher Walken as the Emperor. Fantastic actor, fantastic performance. In the novel, the Emperor takes spice so he is about 80yo but he only looks 30yo. I will take Walken over super accuracy :) Lynch's "Dune" is almost unrecognisable as the novel and adds some wild stuff you don't need lol

The plan was to have Jessica's daughter marry Feyd Rautha and merge the bloodlines, their child was planned to be the Kwisatz Haderach. Paul being a man foiled that and led to the messiah being a generation early when the bene gesserit weren't ready to control him.

Great reaction. This movie was the end of book one of 6 books. So next movie will be beginning of book 2. Called "Dune Messiah". Frank Herbert, the author of the books, did not know if Dune would be a success. He originally had 3 books in his mind. But Dune was well received. Became the bestselling Sci-fi book of all time when published. So, he continued with the other books. Again. Herbert wrote 6 total. Then his son contributed to many more. 23 total, I think. But to diehard fans it is the first 6 that make up the Dune Saga. Thanks for your very enjoyable reactions.

He's definitely got the chops for so much more than his cartoonishly large physique is likely to afford him, sadly. And yeah,. Frank Herbert was one of a great many SciFi writers from the mid-20th who were libertarians with a fetish for Islam. Robert A. Heinlein was another. One of the only qualms I had with this movie was the duel between Paul and Feyd. In the book, it is extremely one-sided. Paul has complete control of the fight at all times and it's very evident to everyone in the room. The movie, for understandable reasons of wanting tension, makes the fight more fair. They did keep the killing blow consistent, it's the same move Gurney taught him at the beginning of the first movie. I liked that bit.

"What happens if Paul dies?" The Fremen wait for a new Lisan Al-Ghaib... Paul wasn't the first messiah of the Fremen and won't be the last. In the book Dr Kynes was a Lisan Al-Ghaib (they are the one who started the Fremen collecting water caches to terraform Arrakis), and there were others before him/her (Kynes is a man in the book, and Chani's father - her book character is much more focused on carrying her father's vision to fruition than denying Paul)

I wanted to see Dune in all its weird glory but what we got was a dumbed down version. The main motivation for Paul’s decision to take the water of life was left out completely and makes him look like he just wanted to be a dictator or something like that, which is the opposite of what Paul is. Dune without Alia, mentats and Guild, doesn’t make sense either. I won’t spoil anything but I highly recommend the books because they actually show you why Dune is such a masterpiece.

Anyway I think Paul saw the bene geserit's dirty plans after he drinks the water of life. So thats why he is angry with his mom and other bene geserit members.
