Evil Dead 2 Movie Description:
Evil Dead II (also known in publicity materials as Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn) is a 1987 American comedy horror film directed by Sam Raimi, who co-wrote it with Scott Spiegel. The second installment in the Evil Dead film series, it is considered both a remake and sequel (or "re-quel") to The Evil Dead (1981). It stars Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, who vacations with his girlfriend to a remote cabin in the woods. He discovers an audio tape of recitations from a book of ancient texts, and when the recording is played, it unleashes a number of demons which possess and torment him.
After the critical and commercial failure of Crimewave (1985), Raimi, producer Robert Tapert, and Campbell began work on a sequel to The Evil Dead at the insistence of their publicist Irvin Shapiro. Having endorsed the original film, author Stephen King brought the project to the attention of producer Dino De Laurentiis, with whom he had been making his directorial debut Maximum Overdrive (1986). De Laurentiis agreed to provide financial backing, and assigned the filmmakers a considerably larger budget than they had worked with on the original film. Although Raimi had devised a premise set in the Middle Ages and involving time travel, De Laurentiis requested that the film be similar to its predecessor.
Evil Dead II was shot in Wadesboro, North Carolina and Detroit, Michigan in 1986, and featured extensive stop-motion animation and prosthetic makeup effects created by a team of artists that included Mark Shostrom, Greg Nicotero, Robert Kurtzman and Tom Sullivan, the latter of whom returned from the original film. The finished film was released in the United States on March 13, 1987; due to its high level of violence, it was released through a pseudonymous distributor to curb an anticipated X rating from the Motion Picture Association of America. Much like The Evil Dead, it was widely acclaimed by critics, who praised its humor, Raimi's direction, and Campbell's performance; many have considered it superior to its predecessor and similarly as one of the greatest horror films ever made. Despite being given a somewhat limited release, it was a minor box office success, grossing just under $6 million.
As with the first film, Evil Dead II has accumulated a large, international cult following. In 1992, it was followed by the direct sequel Army of Darkness, which utilized Raimi's original premise; in 2013, it was followed by the soft reboot and continuation Evil Dead; and in 2015, it was followed by the television series Ash vs Evil Dead. A fifth film in the series, Evil Dead Rise, is scheduled to be released in April 2023.

Just the absolute durability of Ash through this whole movie always kills me. Saw this high AF when I was about 16 (1988) Around the time the demon sends him whipping across the forest at 40 mph, I knew this was no ordinary horror film. Great reaction. I agree that this movie isn't "campy", it's just unique and incredibly entertaining. Some of the directing techniques Sam Raimi used in this movie are so inventive, that I've never seen anything like it before or since. This movie (and Army of Darkness) was done on a relatively low budget by Hollywood standards, so it's a incredible what Raimi managed to achieve. Army of Darkness goes in a different direction and it's just as entertaining, but I would recommend you watch the Theatrical release, as the Director's cut has some choppy editing which I think ruins certain great scenes in my opinion.

There is a cut out there that is Evil Dead and Evil Dead 2, but it takes the ending of Evil Dead where Ash is attacked by the evil and it cuts to credits but instead they transitioned to the part in the opening of Evil Dead 2 where he's spinning through the trees, making it one continuous movie. It also makes Ash's character development 100% better because he's first a frightened wuss like in the majority of Evil Dead 1 into the badass of Evil Dead 2/Army Of Darkness and Bruce has said that he thinks that's the definitive version, because its the one in his head.

The Evil Dead movies are the grandest experiences to see in a theatrical screening and they're like drive-in style classics in the 1980's. They're super fun, they're bloody, they're horror, Bruce Campbell, the second movie's campiness is a uniquely amusing vision, and the effort poured into the practical effects in both movies are worthwhile. I've grown up with these movies since I was a kid and I was so elated to see the 2013 remake in theaters on opening weekend be as awesome as it was. If you haven't seen that one, I hope you react to that one sometime too.

Great commentary as always! Evil Dead 2 is my favorite from the series (though I do love Army of Darkness for how silly it is, intentionally so) and it largely comes down to the campiness of it. It's fun, silly, violent, isn't afraid to stick in a few laughs and slapstick humor bits. And on top of it all, it was made by people with a huge passion for props, practical effects, and creating wild contraptions in order to get their shot. At it's core, despite being a crazy, over the top, and downright insane movie at times, it's made by people who truly love, love, love movies, and it really shows.

I loved the cinematography, innovative shots and tracking and use of sound are genius. I loved the ending and the years waiting for the next film were painful. This is my favorite horror movie of all time and the best of the three movie series. This movie is a gem. I remember a friend or brother saying "Eat it! Eat it!" whenever the Deadite eye in mouth scene came on. I was not a fan of Army of Darkness at all; the genre completely switched (I didn't find the movie funny and it was no longer a horror film), I was turned off by the dated and old stop action Harry Hausen claymation from the 1960's (and 1933 King Kong movie), and the only enjoyable part of the that film was the emergence of the super action star Ashe; Renaissance had started this with Hercules and continued it with Xena. For me the only good thing about Army is that it set up the Ash vs the Evil Dead series. I fought against seeing the comedic elements when I was younger as I only wanted to see it as a horror film but eventually gave in.

Love all that you said, BUT in my opinion and in many, many, many fans opinions, Army of Darkness is beloved and is a fantastic part of the Evil Dead Franchise. So many people who love Evil Dead now got into it with Army of Darkness first. A lot of Bruce Campbell fans love Army of Darkness and consider it their favorite of the ED Series. I do like the direction it took, it was hilarious, fun and enjoyable since the character Ash had already endured all super horror from the first two movies, so it was nice they switched it up. But Glad they did more blending of army of darkness and Evil Dead 2 style in the Ash vs evil dead show instead of just keep it AoD style, so you get the Scares and the humor. Evil Dead 2 is my favorite in the Franchise, but Army of Darkness is right behind or even right next to ED 2 for me. But that is just my opinion.

@@DaveDynamite1 Everyone has buts...and are entitled to them. Thanks for the support! Not going to tear anyone down. At this point Evil Dead needs all the fans it can get (Like Star Trek) in my opinion. Lots of folks like AoD, and good for them. I loved the striking ending costumes, tragic serious theme, color, and set location of Evil Dead II and the contrasts for me was very jarring, different, and looked less expansive, a bit cheap honestly. But that is just my opinion. It's wonderful to have another person validate something you love. I get and appreciate that and glad Melli enjoyed an older film. Hopefully he'll enjoy the franchise. I like Within the Woods more than ED 2013 (which I thought was a bit too serious and leaned too much into straight horror) (I liked the closing cameo). I do not think Evil Dead should chase after or engage in the "making the scariest serious scenes" or "scariest movies", it's a moving goal post that everyone tries to pass. I love that way they play with and introduce the absurd (and have characters even join in and participate by losing their sense) and original ways to introduce haunts and shocks. The comedic and absurd and horrific run through the shack is just brilliant, simple, absurd, potentially funny, original, and memorable. I have my favorite horror, scifi horror, and action horror favs. I'm a huge of of Night of The Creeps (not the cheap racial humor) because of it's 50's vibe, soundtrack, and police chief one-liner. We all have our faves and we are always right about why we love them! Most fav Evil Dead moment (or top 5)...go!

@@bensweiss Yeah the combo of horror/comedy is what makes Evil Dead so good for me, and ED2 one of my favorite movies of all time. Army of Darkness leaned too much into comedy and 2013 too much into horror (I still like both though). Certain parts are similar to horror movies from the 30s-50s, like you mention that line sounding like it's from broadway. At the same time it's so over the top, but done in a smart way. It seems like at the time, all of the slashers were competing to do the craziest/most ridiculous stuff. It's just fun

The writer, Scott Spiegel, cowrote and directed a slasher comedy two years later called Intruder. Sam and Ted Raimi and Bruce Campbell all have small parts in it. The SFX are also by KNB, and Dan Hicks (Jake with the overalls) is really good in it.

I can answer that one..i love the practical effects they used. I love the uniqueness of how they handled demon possession in a way that was really creative. I am so absolutely in love with the way they the used practical stuff that is never seen anymore..I just love the movie cause it's still unsettling to me years later.

The Evil Dead video game is a whole lot of fun, but mostly with friends. Solo queue as a survivor can be a bit frustrating, and the Demon sometimes feel either constantly underpowered or overpowered. There's supposed to be a balance patch this week to help, with a new survivor character and a demon being introduced, though they only balance once every few months it feels. They only balance when releasing skins or other content. They just introduced a new game type. People where hoping for a horde mode, but instead got a Battle Royale. Your progression for that is not tied to your normal leveling of characters for base game, so it does feel like a big grind sometimes. In short, real fun game, better with friends, gameplay loop gets stale for demons, and updates are scarce. 6/10 game. Above average, but has room to grow.

My take on this: This is not a remake of the first, but rather a retelling of the story from the perspective of the hero as he progressively becomes more and more insane. Pretty soon he essentially becomes a cartoon superhero. That's some deep insanity.

The Evil Dead video game is pretty fun. A bit repetitive with the 4 vs demon mode, but the story missions are pretty faithful to the movies and series. That said, it will spoil a few things from the show if you play it before watching the series. A couple of the 2013 characters are in it in small parts as dlc, but the base game is Ash focused

Bruce Campbell really loves the character of Ash and everything it did for his career even till this day. Ash is such a memorable main character in a really crazy and over the top movie about a dude who goes from trying to get laid, to trying to survive the night, to becoming a hero of legend that sometimes accidentally releases horrible evil demons into the world on accident. Like it or love it hes the best man for the job when it comes to blowing your deadite problems away. Bruce Campbell is the man. The camerawork is so unique to his style and sort of became a signature of his with the low rolling camera as the POV of the demons. Having Ash rigged up and spun around while he was getting possessed was another great and fun trick. Sam Raimi has such a cool style and if you ever saw Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness you might notice a few little shots seem like they were his idea. The form that the evil takes in these movies. Their sheer brutality and how they use their otherworldly knowledge to taunt the protagonists into a feeling of utter helplessness. How deceptive they can sometimes be and how terrifying they can look when they reveal themselves. How much fun it is to see them get blasted and blown apart by our heroes while they talk the most shit possible. Constantly chasing and following Ash from the moment he found the book and tape relentlessly. Some really great designs in both the movies and the show. Glad you enjoyed the film!

Some key things to know; they didn't have the rights to the original Evil Dead, which was actually meant as a more straight up horror film. It was more goofy due to the low budget mostly. This and subsequent in the series are meant as horror-comedies, which is actually what Raimi apparently really wanted, because he and Campbell and most of their friends really liked, but the proto-film of Evil Dead, Within The Woods, was a short version of the original Evil Dead meant to attract investors (which Campbell and Raimi say are ideally dentists who go to Vegas or Atlantic City; invest their gambling money).

Army of Darkness is more comedy with less horror, but still Evil Dead. You should watch the TV show. It’s the horror from part 2 with the comedy of AOD. Chefs kiss

That's why we consider this film is a true genre classic. Great sense of humor. Sam Raimi and Bruce have worked together a LOT since this film. Fun Fact: Sam Raimi hired the best gore effects people in Hollywood for this film. What we love about it is ASH. he is the ultimate common Man's hero. Both capable and a doofus. Ash has Swagger but isn't anywhere near perfect. Relatable. yeah Sam keeps it rolling, if the film was directed by Terantino, they'd sit around for 30 minutes talking between action scenes...

When they wanted to make Evil Dead 2, they didn't have the rights to their own original movie, they wanted to recap the events of the first movie, but since they didn't have the rights they said "f' it" and just re-imagined the first movie... the merging point where the second movie really starts is when the camera zooms in on Ash at the end of the first movie and where the evil picks him up and spins him around in the second movie... but since they re-imagined so many details, it isn't a clean continuation.
