You aren't stupid at all, you are exactly correct the ghoul at the end is the cowboy from the beginning of the episode. You were also correct in guessing why he was being looked down upon by the dads at the party. Don't worry if the last 15 minutes with the ghoul seemed confusing, his backstory gets shown a lot more in the coming episodes.

The fallout universe is an alternate where the 50's aesthetic never went out of style, and the world went all in on nuclear powered everything.

Additionally, transistors never really took off, which is why most of the tech runs off vacuum tubes instead. The Fallout tech also burns oil and fossil fuels at about 3 times the rate we do in reality, which sets the stage for the constant resource war that pushed the world to war. After that, throw in aliens, cosmic abominations, and the idea that radiation is more magical and you basically have the building blocks of the ridiculously insane, but really fun and interesting world. The music still brings up memories from all the Fallout games. Even with the slight deviations from the lore, I liked this series a ton.

Just to clarify things, Fallout is set in the future of an alternate timeline where history took a different turn just after World War Two. The first big difference is that the transistor wasn't invented in 1947 (like it was in our world). After that, they didn't have the social upheavals of the 60s, so the ideas and attitudes of the 50s didn't change; if anything, they got stronger. Instead of Detente and Perestroika, they got the Cold War getting colder and colder, until the dam burst in 2077.

In all the games, the vaults aren't connected at all. This is the first time the connected vaults are shown. There are several factions/groups of people on the surface, each of them unique and with their own goals. Raiders are from the surface. Brotherhood of steel are a military group focused on maintaining order their own way. 22:55 you mean prim and proper? The ghoul is the cowboy at the start, he said "cowpoke" and is wearing a cowboy style outfit. Humans who got exposed to radiation too much and didn't die can turn into ghouls, they have a much longer lifespan than regular humans. Most of them however are feral ghouls, they lost their intelligence and become animalistic. Those that retain their mind are called non-feral ghouls like that cowboy. Yes a lot of elements in the show are inspired from the game, like doing quests and choice-based scenarios like what Moldaver gave.

You may have missed it, but there's a very quick panning shot with the Home Robots that this franchise uses. It was the year 2077 when we see the Nukes fall. The visual is meant to showcase how people from the 1950's believed the future would look like. Remember, Back to the Future showed the year 2015 with hover technology; self drying and self adjusting clothes. WE however are still WAY too far off for stuff like that. The Fallout universe has the same history as ours right up until the end of WWII. Then it changes drastically. They never invented the semiconductor like we did until about 2067. That's why you see the electronics have vacuum tubes. When the bombs fall in the beginning it's 2077, so now it's 2296. Now you are young, to those of us growing up during The Cold War that intro is what we feared would happen- every day. But we lived our lives. When I teach my The History of The Cold War classes, I always start by showing them a five minute video of nuclear explosions with eerie music, to make your generation understand what it all was- and what you will have to get used to again with Putoloni's sabre-rattling (though he is too much of a coward to do it). About the "Wild" cars. The game is set in an alternative timeline, where the transistor was never invented, so everything used vacuum-tubes like early computers. And thus the timeline starts diverging from ours in the year after WW2, and progress is generally much slower. But there is also no Cuban Missile Crisis, Long Island, etc, and no reckoning with its past, so the US carries on in a sort of Truman-Eisenhower Superamerica with nuclear powered cars, etc. But in the 21st century fossil fuels and other resources starts running out, and The Resource Wars starts; where Europe, Africa and The Middle East is torn apart, and China invades Alaska to get the last remaining oil resource on the planet. And in 2077... Boom. And oh yea, the US turns authoritarian semi-Fascist, a bit like Starship Troopers. Anyway, think of the game and series as set in a sort of retro-futuriatic post apocalypse, IE a future as imagined in the fifties, but then add a nuclear exchange of superpowers.

The Fallout universe is an interesting concept. It is stylized in the 50s but with crazy future tech that they thought would be developed in the future. The timeline is 2077 when nuclear war broke out with China. It seems fossil fuels and uranium were both becoming scarce in the world. Now the Amazon series is based in California similar to what Fallout 3 was, but something like 20 years later. It is actually the latest in the timeline around 9 years after Fallout 4 took place. They did not stick 100% with lore. The NCR covered I think 3 states, had something like 7 million people, and multiple cities. Shady Sands was just the capital of the NCR. Unlike most of the world the New California Republic had regained a lot of technology including plasma weapons and cloning. They also had large manufacturing facilities that could not only make goods for their people, but also weapons, ammo, armor, and even Vertibirds (their helicopter things). Shady Sands was only about 5% of their population and well the overall government was based there they had strong military leaders and local mayors over other large cities. They could have easily re established a new government. They were also MUCH stronger that the Legion (Fallout New Vegas) and the Brotherhood of Steel. It is sad they neutered the NCR for the show. They also changed a few things, like the ghouls needing a chemical to not go feral. This was NEVER a thing in any of the games and never even hinted at. They repeatedly said they did not know when or why ghouls would go feral. Even in Fallout 4, which was 210 years after the bomb drop there were probably 8or more named ghouls in the game from before the war and never was it mentioned. They also changed the Brotherhood of Steel quite a bit. The knights were never so petty and cruel. The organization would have fallen apart if it was. Now they might have had some bad leadership and this might have caused some of those changes and they were only in the last few years, but it is hard to tell. The assault rifle they use is also not that big. They kind of replaced the minigun (large 6 barrel gun) with this larger assault gun. The other issue Todd Howard (the head of Bethesda that made Fallout 3, 4, and 76) is that if there is enough radiation to kill of plants and trees it is 100x what is needed to kill off humans and animals... and most radiation would be down to manageable levels within a few years. That was the biggest problem I had with Fallout 4 and was the first mod I installed in the game was adding green back in. Really the vegetation would have overgrown everything without enough population to keep it at bay. Western California should not be a dessert and nuclear winter is just not going to effect weather that much or for anywhere near that long and this area of California is pretty lush. All that said they still nailed most of the props and uniforms as well as they could for the budget and the overall story and acting was pretty good. I would not say it was great, but I would give it a solid B+ and actually better than I expected it to be.
