You're missing one element of why Simon was different in this episode. Simon has spent his entire life in the core worlds, and his adult life as a medical student and then doctor. Throughout this series he has always been something as a fish out of water, in situations and places and around people that are nothing like his past experiences. It's no wonder that he's awkward and uncertain. This episode puts him back in his element, in a hospital on one of the core worlds. Suddenly we see the confident doctor who knows what he's doing and how to deal with the people he's coming in contact with.

1000% correct. I give total props to the actor for his performance & am glad the show gave us a situation where we can see "another side" to Simon. Who, while still my least favorite character, before this episode was starting to feel very shallowly "two dimensional".

The last scene between Mal & Jayne is absolutely brilliant in both acting and dialog. There is no doubt Mal was going to kill Jayne for his betrayal. When Jayne showed that he accepted his fate, gave genuine remorse, and had real concern for what the others would think of him - it saved his life. It let Mal feel like "This is someone worth redemption. I can still work with him." I really enjoy the speculation that the character growth Jayne learned in Jaynestown is what saved his life in Ariel. This is one of my favorite episodes for many reasons. It ties in some nice callbacks as well as brought forth many points of interest. When Kaylee & Wash are in the scrapyard Wash picked up the same kind of engine part that broke in "Out of Gas" and threw it. In the beginning call back, Simon was eating one of the mystery meals - curtesy of when River ripped off the can labels. Freeze frame on those labels and we see the Blue Sun Corporation logo. This episode River takes a knife and slashes the logo on Jayne's shirt. That logo is also the Blue Sun Corporation. In the pilot episode, Mal asked Jayne why didn't he betray him. Jayne said the money wasn't good enough. "What happens when it is?" asked Mal. "Well, that will be an interesting day." said Jayne. In Ariel, Jayne got his interesting day. River was on to Jayne's betrayal but spoke about it in metaphors. "Copper for a kiss" when she woke up from the induced death. When they were captured she was telling Jayne how they were "taking away Christmas" inferring she knew Jayne would not be getting his reward. Simon is always at his most defiant when he is protecting River. He is also pretty formidable when he is in his element. Simon really shines in this episode because he got both.

I don't think he decided Jayne was "worth" redemption as much as he decided that redemption was *possible.* I don't think he's in any position to decide whether someone is worthy of turning their life around, being a career criminal who's willing to kill people just to make a point (kicking that guy into Serenity's engine,) but he *is* in a good position to judge whether or not someone's actually going to attempt to change or if it's pointless to try and reach them. And Angel, another Whedon show, was one long mediation on the nuances of redemption that ultimately decided that redemption was worth seeking even if you knew you'd never achieve it - the search gives it meaning, not whether or not the goal is achievable, or whether or not you deserve it. But that could also be my biases talking - I firmly believe that nobody is ever worthy of redemption, under any circumstances. Redemption is *earned* by people who, inherently, do not deserve it, but are willing to strive for it.

Remember that the core (central planets) is where Simon is from - he is in his element. On the frontier, when he interacts with people from the rim, he is completely out of his element - he doesn't know how to talk to Kaylee, or Mal. But on the core planets, particularly in a medical environment, his training, his life, kind of takes over. He is very used (as most very good doctors are) to talking down to people in society, and society just going along with it because of his standing and because he knows what he is doing. That just cannot fly on Serenity, and so he has been a fish out of water since the show started. I love how the show did this, and it can seem jarring that all of a sudden he has courage when he didn't before, but when taken in context it's quite brilliant of them to do this with his character.

I love the "cortical electrodes" sequence in this episode. It's a brilliantly executed joke, but it's also a sneaky character moment for Simon. If he were at the front door of the hospital, he would absolutely be making sure that the paramedics knew what they should have done; it might be too late for this patient, but it could save the next one. It shows a level of dedication to his craft which is clearly not typical based on how the interaction actually plays out.

When Mal says "you did it to me" I feel like it was more along the lines of "but you did do it to me [you also did it to Wash, Kaylee, etc because we are all one family. If Jayne didn't care, it wouldn't have hurt, but we see he cares, just made stupid choices.
@stuffyouotterlistento14612 жыл бұрын
Interestingly, I think it actually did matter to Mal that Jayne did it to Simon and River. At the very least, he had legitimate grievances with them (or with River, at least, who had just slashed him), and reasons why he never saw them as a legitimate part of the crew. If he'd screwed over somebody else, that couldn't have been as neatly compartmentalized, and it would show that he couldn't be trusted by anybody. The fact is though, Jayne looks up to Mal and isn't entirely without loyalty. He only tried to turn Simon and River in while sparing the rest of the crew. It's still an affront to Mal, who is protective of everybody on his ship, but I don't think it's quite as black and white as he makes it out to be. If it were somebody else, I don't think that Jayne's remorse would've been enough. (Note that I've always thought that Jayne was significantly out of character in The Train Job, where he was ready to turn on everybody and write Mal off. That's just not what we see from him elsewhere.)

This doesn't fall in my favorites as a whole, but it has favorite aspects/scenes of the series for me. I like how we see Simon in his familiar environment and how different he is there compared to on Serenity where he's completely out of that. We've always seen him to one extent or another unsure or backing down or following to some degree as he's learning this totally different life... but as a doctor in the hospital he takes charge, gives orders, judges and chastises as though he thoroughly belongs and is in a superior position/knowledge than those he's dealing with; Then the continuation of that with standing up to the Alliance personnel as he's being in his "home territory", so to speak, and knowing how they function. It shows a much different side of him and gives a much more rounded idea of who he was and the position/life he gave up compared to how he lives and acts now to get by for River. The other one, of course, it that ending scene between Mal and Jayne. Fillion delivers a hell of a believable response there as he and Jayne go back and forth through the window. Great tension between them where the only time we've seen similar is in Out of Gas where he grabs Wash. I found it a nice touch in OoG when he did that and it cut to the others with Jayne, the focus, stepping back uneasily. Another case of seeing a different side of a character... Simon's firmness when in his element, Mal's firmness when truly needed with subordinates.

Yeah, you have to put this show in context of its time. In 2002, it was exceptionally rare for high budget tv shows airing on network tv to kill off main characters. This was well before most of shows like GoT, really HBO's main claim-to-fame was still primarily the Sopranos. Whedon, however, had demonstrated his willingness to kill major characters repeatedly on both Buffy and Angel. When this originally aired, I was near certain Jayne was done for and was so happy Mal saw him as worthy of redemption since he was my favorite.

Exactly. Add in the fact that Mal was incredibly dismissive of Jayne's concerns (at least in Jayne's earshot), it kind of makes sense that Jayne would see that as the last straw. That's how I see it anyway. I don't think Mal would have been so level-headed about the attack if River had slashed Kaylee or Inara or even Wash. He would have ripped into Simon immediately, in front of everyone, and possibly even kicked the Tams off Serenity. Only because it was 'just Jayne', did he keep his cool and defend Simon and River's place on the crew.

This is in my 2 favorite episodes list, because I feel like Simon is the character I am mostly aligned with, personality wise. Although, the personality tests put me on equal grounding between Simon and Shepherd. Also note, that stripped amygdala was not the only thing Aliance did to River, there were many other scars on her brain that Simon saw. They were playing with her brain, in the most literal and horrifying sense. The last scene with "time to wake up" is awesome, and I had always took it like Simon being better informed in how to medicate her better, not that he knows how to regrow brains, lol. Additionally, if you listen to River, she had been trolling Jayne about his betrayal even before he called the cops (second time), many people argue whatever she cut him with a knife because she saw the betrayal ahead of time, or because of the shirt that Jayne was wearing, I think it is probably a bit of both + Jayne being an ass to Simon and her since they got onboard.

I agree. That was not just Mal giving some "tough love" to a crew member to get him back into line. He was for real, and Jayne knew it.
@sirmoonslosthismind2 жыл бұрын
i view that whole scene in purely practical terms because on some level i think mal does as well. first, mal's job is to plan everything, and that requires him to have a handle on what personnel he is working with. thus, even if mal were purely self-interested, he wouldn't turn a blind eye to jayne turning on a fellow crew member, because it's not just that other crew member who might be seriously affected. remember how lucky the crew were that they were able to get book treated in simon's absence. the unexpected disappearance of a crew member is an unwelcome surprise. in the end, whether you think jayne "deserved" to live or die, i don't think mal gave that any thought whatsoever. rather, he ultimately decided that jayne was still more useful alive than dead. again, purely practical.

_Simon_ appears to be quite fearless when it comes to taking care of _River._ I do like to think _Mal_ decided to save _Jane_ in that last moment. From the first episode, I'd immediately pegged Jayne's character as "mercenary". He was a person who only cared about himself and money.... a man with zero loyalty. He wasn't necessarily bad, he just only cared about #1. I think if nothing had happened to him, he wouldn't have cared at all about what he did, and Mal would have killed him. But what DID happen, was Jaynestown. At the climax, that kid took a bullet for him and saved his life. At the end, we had that long scene with him and Mal, where Jayne was totally confused about what happened, turning to Mal like a kid to a father, not understanding these strange new feelings he had. I think this was the first time Jayne had ever thought about another, _cared_ about another... perhaps because it was the first time anyone had ever done anything for him. And I think it was entirely because of that, that his nature changed. He started to think and care for others and, over several episodes, led us to the point where he said "don't tell 'em what I did", because he cared what they thought of him. And it was from that that Mal didn't kill him. I fully believe that kid in Jaynestown giving his life for Jayne is why Jayne is alive, and why he started the slow path of moving away from being just a mercenary.
@becca11898 ай бұрын
Jaynestown was step one. Out of Gas was step two. I think it was the 1st time that Jayne realized that there was someone he could trust: Mal. Mal's willingness to sacrifice himself for his crew through his deeds (rather than just saying it) was a turning point. We don't know if Stitch would've turned on Jayne or not. Was he lying? Did he even know for sure? Jayne tossed him out before he had a chance to react. What Stitch said about watching your partner's (or crew's) back is true in principal, but out on the rim or even the boarder planets it certainly seems rare. Jayne is nothing if not a survivor. It's clear from the way Jayne talked about Mal in regard to Simon & River that he believed Mal was no different than most others removed from "civilization". Out of Gas gave him a better idea, albeit not a complete one. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

"A chain of betrayals" is a perfect description of this episode, but almost everyone misses the first link in the chain: Mal betrays Jayne. Jayne is right when he says to Mal that if River had cut anyone else, she'd be off the boat. But, it was just Jayne. And THAT is what starts Jayne to start thinking about getting rid of River and Simon. If you go back through the previous episodes, you'll see that Jayne had opportunities to turn River and Simon in before Ariel, but didn't. What changed in this episode? Mal's betrayal.

Maybe this is a bit of a stretch, because how would the cops know to be waiting for them there, but Jayne obviously starts feeling bad before things go down, after learning what was done to River. @@dongilleo9743 Exactly right. It's also why River was tearing labels off of food cans in an earlier episode, those cans had the same corporate logo on them. She's reacting to symbols of the company that was involved with her torture.
@dunringill17472 жыл бұрын
@@dongilleo9743 A clue in that scene, Simon was eating a mystery meal - courtesy of when River ripped off can labels. Those can labels had the Blue Sun Corporation logo on them, just like Jayne's shirt. But it is also fun to speculate that River predicted Jayne's betrayal versus that she slashed him for the betrayal which became the cause behind his betrayal.
@mlodestar27432 жыл бұрын
If Jayne hadn't asked Mal not to tell about his betrayal, I think Mal actually would have spaced him. (Just as he kicked Niska's thug into the engine turbine.) And a case could be made that Mal should have done-in Jayne for his act of real betrayal. Displaying a guilty conscience, once you've been caught at something, isn't really conscience.

Consider the fact that Jayne would not have turned in the Tams if Shepherd Book had been around. When the crew were split into Shuttles in Out of Gas, Jayne would have been more cooperative around Book. Also, Mal kept the Tams away from Jayne as it made the doubt moot. Worlds like Ariel and Persephone are part of the reason that I consider the 'Verse as a cyberpunk campaign setting. Megacorporations, black markets, inefficient governments, culture mixtures. I think when River slashed at Jayne it was not just a random act. At some level she already knew that Jayne had a plan in motion to betray her and Simon. Nothing River does is just "crazy" or meaningless. At all points during this episode River was making wise choices where everyone else was not. She just cannot communicate her concerns in a way others can understand. She was desperate not to go to places which later proved to be traps and told others not to go there, but of course no one was listening and her fears were just dismissed as ravings.

It's more than that. Mild spoilers below.... Did you see what the shirt had on it? It was the Blue Sun corporate logo. That logo was also on the food cans that she stripped the labels off of in an earlier episode. One might suspect that that corporation also runs a certain school for the gifted, makes Fruity-Oaty Bars, and employs men who travel two-by-two with hands of blue.

Better to say "don't hit people, unless they hit you first and it's the only way to protect yourself."
