Seems like a good show for you guys to pick up when you finish TNG. Ten seasons and two movies. There is definitely a lot of Star Trek in the show, if instead of Star Fleet you had the US Air Force and all the baggage that goes with that.
@bobbyskinner3720

You should definitely watch the first episode. As a pilot the small budget shows but it explains the team. It is much like star trek (episodic) in that each week offers a new independent story, but there is a overarching story that builds through out the series, so you can enjoy any single episode, but there is an ongoing story to follow. While I call it my second place SciFi series, in some ways it is better than Star Trek.

been watching this channel since they were on season 1 TOS and waiting with patient anticipation that SG1 would come into the watching mix. So when I saw this it made me so excited. I'm glad they watched one, but I so hope they'll add it to the rotation very soon. Maybe we need to hear a patreon goal to make it a reality! Minimum 2 seasons (cause 1st is world building and need to 2nd to really hit the stride).

Stargate did something that had never been done before. They start out in a modern day, real world setting, and gradually become a "sci-fi" show. And we see every step of that journey. They don't just find a magic object and advance 1000 years overnight. Hope you guys also react to the pilot (director's cut not the broadcast version).
@dash4800
@dash4800 18 күн бұрын
they also come up with plausible, in universe, explanations for all the sci-fi stuff. Its not like star trek where they just babble off a bunch of nonsense that nobody could ever track to try actually understand the rules of the universe. In stargate you know the rules, and when something happens and they figure out an explanation you actually can follow it. You don't just shrug you shoulders and say "ok I guess", like you would in star trek.

StarGate SG1 is one of the best Sci-Fi-series of all time! Season 1 is a little bit too fomulaic, but after that it's gold. It is also one of the first series that do have a true memory of earlier episodes, where earlier events are constantly mentioned and referred to. It is a problem-of-the-week series, but if they solved a problem a certain way, they don't forget that but (the writers) find ways, why it doesn't work this time - so they have to come up with something new. Can't wait for you to see the Asgard an Thor 😁.

The show so perfectly explores the ideas of the movie, with such great character chemistry, continuity, and progression, that by the time it's over... it's hard watching the movie anymore; It just doesn't compare. There’s actually a running gag through the series that there are two O’Neill’s in the Air Force, RDA often refers to his name having two L’s, and at one point even references KR’s O’Neil as being “no fun at all”. (I forget the actual quote). So he kinda is, but isn’t supposed to be KR’s O’Neil!

Likely the Torment of Tantalus was suggested cause it is deep lore wise. It shows the heights of what SG-1 does as a show. TNG does a lot of great episodes of the week. SG-1 is a giant 10 season long movie. Yes plenty of singular "filler" episodes where that particular planet/people/etc isnt directly connected to the main story but they all connect to the core theme of SG-1, what we as our current society, current for when it was made, would do and how we would handle dealing with a galactic threat and exploration. Also while yes Richard Dean Andesron replaces Kurt Russell his version of Colonel Oneill is amazing and a great take on the character. Kurt was great for the action movie that Stargate was. Richard is great for this series yet campy at times intergalactic romp. Also the supporting cast is superb. Christopher Judges Teal'c is a great character. And Id argue cause this came first that Sony likely wrote Kratos to act and sound like Teal'c. Also knowing the mythos of the entire Stargate series there is a cool kinda reason why they would LOL.

When I conducted 5 years of Uber/Lyft Rideshare driving there were several times I picked up customers and they asked me a serious questions and they said my character would be judged based on my answer to their question "Star Trek or Star Wars?" So, I would mess with them and said "I'm more of a Stargate fan first and foremost, then a Star Trek fan, then a Star Wars fan." And my answer either blew them away and they loved it or they were massively confused. It was so funny to mess with them. I'm a die hard Stargate fan I've watched all 10 seasons of Stargate SG1, 5 seasons of Stargate Atlantis, 2 seasons of Stargate Universe, and the TV series movies based off SG1 which was Stargate Continuum and then to finish the entire SG1 series was Stargate The Ark of Truth and I've seen all of these about 10-12 times. If your unaware both Richard Dean Anderson and Christopher Judge, who plays the roles of Jack O'Neil and Teal'c on SG1, they both played on the 80's hit series MacGyver, its what Richard Dean Anderson was mainly known for. Stargate SG1 started out kinda at a slow paced for 4-5 seasons with a mixed pot of good and bad episodes, and then between 5-6 the storyline writing got way better and deeper and it wasn't the same old story telling of exploring through the Stargate to an uncharted planet meeting aliens, exploring ruins, and searching for either technological or scientific research advances to advance and progress all of mankind. Season 8-10 were incredible, the stories were out of this world. Stargate Atlantis and Universe were more similar to Star Trek with more advanced alien technology and space exploration to it. So, I hope you guys checkout and run through the entire series and movies at least once.

Even though I voted for this episode, it's not the one I would have picked as an intro to the series. I have a warm place for Stargate SG1. It did pretty well keeping itself "fresh" over a lot of seasons (although there are some obvious budget saving measures) and really seemed to appreciate its fans. One interesting thing from the post-episode discussion was the presumption that Catherine was a major character in the series. In isolation I can see it, she's a big part of this episode and I can absolutely see a version of the show where she was more present, but it does go to show how even a pretty standalone episode has little details that maybe don't track fully to what the show is most episodes.

Well I am one minute in and wanted to comment before seeing it. I am glad to hear you guys did see the film, it isn't really necessary viewing, but it helps a lot. What really impressed me was how much Michael Shanks version of Daniel Jackson, looked like James Spader from the movie. Stargate is easily up there among my favorite franchises, maybe not quite as high as Star Trek, but really darn close. I personally think SG-1 had a stronger season 1 than TNG, not the peak of the series, but strong enough I could see you guys getting into it. Anyways, like it or not, I am looking forward to seeing your reactions. I think Alex may find a kindred soul in Jack O'niell. Edit: Ok finished off your guys reaction, glad you seemed to enjoy it. I think if you guys were to do a season 1 reaction you would enjoy it, so hopefully this gets the views or engagement needed to make that happen/ Richard Dean Anderson (RD) who played Kurt Russel's character, was the original Macgyver and a fairly popular actor at this point in time. He was a major driver behind the creation of the show and it's earlier seasons. I was also just saying on your Buffy video how I thought an episode based around a guest character would be the best one for you guys to view as it wouldn't be bogged down by character development you had no context for. As you suggested, you missed a lot of context and story starting half way through season 1. I don't want to spoil to much in case you guys decide to watch this. But the show carries over a lot of plot between episodes, probably more so than TNG ever does, but it is still largely episodic. So you guys more or less hit the nail on the head. But the plot of the movie carries over, just the actors are different.

FYI, this and Star Trek DS9, were the first series to really incorporate serialized storytelling into its overall progression, so while there are certainly one-off episodes, it's far more serialized and not just, a gate of the week series. There is an overarching storyline, but it's sprinkled throughout, definitely a series you have to pay attention to, as the call backs to episodes, can range from a few episodes, to tying back to episodes over a season ago.

Gasp! Stargate SG1 my beloved!!! So glad y'all posted this You got the gist of the episodic theme, once described on-screen as "We go through the Gate, we get into trouble, we get out of trouble, we go home." There is a good through-line of characterization even in the more episodic beginnings, but it definitely gets more connected as the seasons go on. Imo as far as episode quality goes it has fewer mad bangers than Trek but also fewer total stinkers. (many of those stinkers, unfortunately, in S1 lmaoooo). some eps are GOOD and once you get to know the characters you can really appreciate the ensemble nature of the cast. I have rewatched my favorite SG1 eps more than my favorite Trek eps. It IS very 90s and not a huge budget (the occasional clip show eps, oof) but the writing is usually just good solid stuff, sometimes dramatic and impressive and usually a rollicking good time.

Ideal suggestion - continue with 2 eps per week of trek - you got 21 more seasons on golden age trek before even considering the recent streaming era silver age trek stuff And add into rotation 1 episode of SG-1 each week…with 10 seasons of it, plus 5 seasons on Atlantis - with that ratio, you should be finishing both shows around the same time :)

Teal'c of Chulak (Judge) is a lot like Kratos in his economic (terse. laconic) in speech pattern. He's the Spock/Worf of the series. Spock's tagline was "Fascinating!"; Teal'c's tagline was "Indeed!" and said once in God of War (2018) by Kratos - so it was a nod to SG-1 and not overkill.

@@po5283 yeah I get why they would, but for me, the foreshadowing and lore setup always make the first season one of the most important, especially as they're basically flying blind at that point, and mess things up almost as much as they solve problems. I almost wish we could see a series from the perspective of the System Lords, as they become aware of these humans appearing and putting major thorns in their sides. Better still would be a series focusing on the rise of the Goa'uld, which would probably be more akin to Game of Thrones in space, and definitely not family friendly!

I told this to Christopher Judge when getting his signature at a Con and his immediate reaction was "Holy shit" One of the most hilarious things about this series is the rotating pronunciation of Goa'uld as "gould", "Go-a--uld" The 4th episode of the first season of SG-1 was written by the same writer as the 4th episode of TNG, "Code of Honor". They have a ridiculously similar plot.
