movie trivia! - Arnold Schwarzenegger worked with guns every day for a month to prepare for the role. The first two weeks of filming he practiced weapons stripping and reassembly blindfolded until the motions were automatic, like a machine. He spent hours at the shooting range and practicing with different weapons without blinking or looking at them when reloading or cocking. He also had to be ambidextrous. He practiced different moves up to 50 times. He wound up garnering a compliment in "Soldier of Fortune" magazine for his realistic handling of the guns on camera (whereas the magazine usually lampoons movies for their inaccurate depictions of weapons use). more trivia - James Cameron got the idea of giving Arnold Schwarzenegger even fewer lines in the film than Schwarzenegger's earlier film Conan the Barbarian (1982), in which Schwarzenegger only had 24 lines. In this film, Schwarzenegger has only 14 lines. neat trivia - (at around 1h 12 mins) The future terminator who infiltrates the human camp in the dream sequence is played by Franco Columbu, who was a multiple Mr. Olympia title winner like Arnold Schwarzenegger and was a close friend of his. more trivia - Before the Terminator attacks Sarah in the police station, the cop states that there are "thirty police officers" in the station. If you count the cops that The Terminator kills on screen and the bursts of fire that he shoots for off-screen targets, it adds up to thirty. However, the sequel Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) reveals that 17 officers were confirmed dead in the end. fascinating trivia - (at around 54 mins) When the Terminator performs surgery on itself to remove its damaged prosthetic eye, although the face is that of a puppet stand in, the hands that perform the surgery are actually Arnold Schwarzenegger's.

It’s not stated until later movies but the terminator is specifically a T-800. It’s referred to as a model 101, which is its human appearance. So there are T-800s that don’t look like Arnold, like the one that attacked the Resistance hideout in Kyle’s flashback He’s an advanced machine from the future made to fight and kill in a war with advanced weaponry. He’s gonna be hard to damage. Especially in past times without bombs or tanks. Or factory machinery.
@lewisner

Fun fact: You see it only briefly but when Sarah's roommate was killed and before the answering machine kicked on, the Terminator was checking her leg. One of the few records from the future was that Sarah had a metal pin in her leg and that was what the terminator was looking for (in her and the other Sarah Conner's). The piece of metal she pulled from her leg in the end was the injury that made that medical record.
@Daveyboy100880

I think that the metal pin in the leg was in earlier drafts of the script, but I just checked and at no point in the scene does the Terminator check Ginger’s leg. The reason Kyle and later Sarah always went around with a dog is because, as Kyle explained, dogs can detect the approach of a Terminator as something not human.

Good reaction to a very good low-budget movie, Angelina. Btw, regarding your post-reaction comment, this was actually a low budget movie (not a big budget by any means whatsoever) even by the 1980s standard. That's because this was one of James Cameron's first movies, so the studio didn't give him much of a budget to work with...that's why the special effects and music look and sound so 'cheap' even by 1984 standards. However, movie--goers were more-so captivated by the clever storytelling. A great sci-fi and/or action movie does not necessarily need a $300 Million budget for special effects. Anyway, after the surprising commercial success of this movie, James Cameron basically commanded more of a budget for his following movies. 'Terminator 2' (T2) from 1991 was a big-budget movie with top-notch special effects at that time, along with a better musical score. You should definitely check out Terminator 2 (1991). Btw, the actress who plays Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) was married to director James Cameron.

"It didn't come cheap!" Interesting you say that since the funding for the movie was minimal at best! One example of how they saved money is the scene where the Terminator breaks into the station wagon and drives over the toy truck... They couldn't get the permits to film that scene, so they actually had Arnold break into someone's car! They would film and then leave before the police got to the scene! There were many scenes where the people walking around are not actors... just people walking around!

As for phone books. The phone company (they were regional at the time) will deliver them to every home. For a fee, you can ask for an unlisted or unpublished number.

Arnold didn't speak English very well yet, which is one reason he had such short lines. If you thought this one was good, Terminator 2 is one of the best sequels ever made.

Watched Avatar 2 by myself, think that was the first time I went to a movie alone. As a VFX/film student, I do my best to watch film credits to the end, to see all the people and studios that worked on it. Needless to say out of the corner of my eye, I could see the shadows of the theatre crew growing impatient as I was the only one left watching for a good 5 minutes(those credits were LONG). Made me a little self-concious but watched all the way to the end. Sorry to those workers, thanks for waiting😅

Old person from the 1900's here; yes they had phone books in most public phone booths. Also, once a year the phone book would be updated and a new book would be delivered to your front door. The White Pages had peoples address and phone number while the Yellow Pages had all the ads you needed to find services such as a roofer or a mechanic.

No cellular phones in the 80s (at least, except for the wealthy) and yes, people used pay phones and pay phones had phone books. Also, gasoline still contained lead and the air over Los Angeles was heavily polluted. Hairspray was destroying the ozone layer in the atmosphere and cocaine was everywhere. CDs were still a few years away and cassette tapes were all the rage for playing music. I still miss the 80s despite all that.

After this are five more films, a 3D theme park attraction, a TV show, comics, graphic novels and videogames. Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in Conan the Destroyer the same year as this. Other notable films released the same year as this include Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Temple of Doom, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Beverly Hills Cop. This was partially inspired by John Carpenter's Halloween and two episodes of the sci-fi series The Outer Limits

I've been going alone in cinemas since 2003, my first lone movie was Return of the King. The last one in date was Dune Part 2. T800 is not cybernetic (cybernetic would mean that it's a biological lifeform enhanced with machinery, which is not the case here). Terminators are ROBOTS with biological outer layer (not necessary for their survival) as camouflage. This movie is especially brilliantly made if you consider that it was made on a small budget... kinda like Star Wars (Ep4)

Hello Ange!😊 This is the low budget film that would make James Cameron's career take off!🏆 Yes, phone books were standard at all pay phones in the 80s. The books would enclose in a plastic case to protect it from the elements when you were done looking at it. A late night movie during the week is the best, when you practically have the theatre to yourself. Yep, that is stop motion for the full body wide shots. It was written by James Cameron and Gale Ann Hurd. Great reactions to the original Terminator, Ange!!!🎬👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

My favorite bit is when he's in the apartment as the landlord asks about the odor coming from the room. The Terminator cycles through possible responses and comes up with "Fuck you, asshole", which is a nod to the scene where the T-800 (the exact model of The Terminator, also referred to in the movie by Reese as Cyberdyne Systems model 101) first arrived and encountered/slaughtered that gang of thugs led by Bill Paxton.
