All of them! A small unknown high school all the way to the championship. A small unranked college 33-0 and all the way to the championship. Last place Celtics team to first his rookie year. They talk about what great players he played with and that’s what made him good. What they don’t tell you is he led the team in every stat except block shots. Points, rebounds, assists and steals

And they didn't mention his back issue... some commentors say he hurt his back working on his mom's driveway, but it was later discovered he had a congenital back problem. During the last few years of his career, he had to be in traction for hours before each game just so he could stand up and make it through a game. He had to wear a back brace when he wasn't playing. When he retired, the first thing he did was take his back brace out into the field and shoot that back brace into oblivian. Can you imagine today's players doing the for 3 or 4 seasons and still play with the same intensity as he always had.

His point was not bad, he just didn’t express it well. The question is basically how good would Larry have been, how much longevity would he have had, if he had access to the medical and training advancements on more recent players. I think that’s a fair thing to bring up, and the fact that he came back from those injuries and still played at a high level says a lot.

Another thing that it seems like folks either don't know or forget is that in addition to the horrific back pain and repeated injuries to his back, feet and legs, he came into the league with a busted finger on his shooting (right) hand, for which he'd already had a major surgery that left his finger at a 45 degree angle and, according to Bird, he never had the same feel when shooting, even though he tried to get it corrected with subsequent surgery (or maybe "surgeries"-- I can't recall if he had a total of two, or if it was more). I know he taught himself to be able to shoot and pass with his left hand, but I don't know if he would have done that even if he hadn't mangled that finger on his right hand.

I'd put a healthy Larry Bird up against anyone of today's players. His biggest injury was his back injury that he got putting in a driveway back home for his mom during the off season. He had millions of dollars, but was doing it himself, because it was family. Also, he destroyed his right hand right before his NBA career started. He filled in for his brother, or one of his teammates, in a softball game and had a ball bounce wrong and bend all the way back two, or three of his fingers on his shooting hand. Good reaction. Thank for sharing.

I'll help you out and put all the numbers you're marveling at all together in one place. 1st team all nba '80-88, first 9 seasons. 2nd team all nba in his 10th season (and 10th for mvp), which was the one after he sat out a season recovering double achilles surgery. Nba all star all 12 seasons he played. 4th for mvp in his ROY campaign ('80). '81-88, he got 67% of all mvp votes in the nba for an 8 yr stretch, finishing 2, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 3, 2 (top 4 each of his 9 yrs, not top 5)... 82-84 three time nba all defense 2nd team, once finishing 3rd for DPOY Never saw a 3pt line until his nba rookie season and averaged 38% for his career, and 42% in his 5 nba finals Bird was the first (and 2nd) member of the 50/40/90 club. He only completed two 50/40/90 seasons, but averaged 50/40/90 over a 4 yr span from 85-88, while just barely missing it twice. His final 7 seasons ('85-92, technically 8 seasons, but only 6 gms in '89) he shot 50.0/39.8/90.6. His first few seasons were spent with a coach that viewed the 3pt shot as a gimmick and discouraged shooting from distance, so he just didn't get proficient at it until he finally started attempting more than 1 per game in 84-85... Boston averaged 61 wins per season in Bird's first 9 seasons. The year he sat out, they won 42. His final 3 seasons, they won 52, 56, 51 and his back injuries had gotten much worse over those final 3 seasons. He also won the first three 3 pt competitions at all star weekend (86-88), but had to withdraw from the 4th one, as it was during his achilles recovery and he had too much trouble shooting in the first round. He essentially won all three 3pt shootouts that he participated

This video doesn't even bring up Bird's back problems. When you see clips of Bird lying in front of the bench it was because he couldn't sit on it due to his spine's deterioration. He couldn't sit on the bench, but he would suit up and play ball every night. He had his back issues long before the double Achilles surgery, so when he came back from that, he was dealing with a double whammy of bad back and bad ankles for the remaining 4 years of his career. He was a badass baller.

The plumbers and firemen thing is a misnomer. The NBA didn't have the sponsors and broadcasting deals in the 40's-70's that they had from the mid-eights onward. You may need a second job in the summer if you want to maintain a certain lifestyle. You can't really go by league averages in pay, because there's a large gap between the highest paid player, and the lowest.

No one has Larry Bird's stats. No one. No one has his award record. No other player in the NBA has done what he has. He worked hard for all of it. He never gave up. Never accepted less for himself or his team. Never complained. He just stood up and did it again. And that's why he is Larry Legend. And I agree with you. Only Jordan gets close to him. MJ could fly. No one can argue it. And Larry Bird schooled MJ. It's a cute video. MJ talks about how Bird taught him to show some respect for the guys who made the game. And he did. Bird played against Magic, Irving, Wilkins, Ewing, Jabar, Barkley, Mcadoo, Murphy, Malone, Pippen, Drexler... that's just a few. No one has that kind of competition now. And the technology to keep these giants now is a far cry from what he had then. The nutrition. The care. The rules. LeBron has never played with a fractured cheek and a concussion because it's not allowed. When Bird played, they didn't care. Win. That was the name of the game. And he did. They all wore themselves out a lot faster then. No NBA player in Bird's era had a 21 year career. They wouldn't survive the injuries that long. It's that simple.

As a former bb coach. I never liked comparing my players..sure some reminded of others but each & every player put their stamp on the game....what's the point in comparing different teams or eras ? It's all just opinion...justs like arseholes . .everyone has one.... no way to prove who is right

Preach young men! I am unable to express my disgust at JJ’s idiotic statements, so I count on you guys to do our God of basketball, Mr. Larry Joe Bird, justice. Let it out! Put JJ in his place, and that is in the pile of below average NBA players.

Is it possible that Lebron learned from Larry "in order" to be the player he is? The evolution of basketball largely gets dismissed....

LeBron has said words to that effect in at least one interview.

JJ was a role player. He was a mediocre shooter. He got passed around the league like a joint. He is so jealous of LB.

Why you so afraid to put Larry in top 3? You have him at 5,6...who you got above him? Your not picking him number one in a draft? The guy doubled his franchise wins by himself...who else did that? Stop making excuses for MJ didn't have a team early on but then say MJ beat the pros while in college...MJ was not Bird...MJ only won when the greats retired and league expanded and was watered down. He never beat any of the great teams.
