Magic got a standing ovation from the Boston crowd when he came out!! That's respect and love!!! They've been brothers for 40 years!!

I guarantee you Isaiah Thomas didn’t like him. Today he’s pretty complimentary. When I was a kid I liked Magic. I never liked Bird because I thought he looked ridiculous. Magic had style. I was a little biased towards black players which funny because I’m white. Now I look at old footage and I realize Larry was better than Magic. Bird is severely under appreciated. Garry Payton said as much.

Larry shot with his right hand. But, he writes with his left. And, throughout his career he used his left hand when the situation called for it. But, to only use his left hand takes away his biggest weapon which was his outside shot. It was an amazing performance.

That would be me. I’m left handed in that I write, eat and do some other tasks left handed but all sports are right handed. Strange I know. My husband is left handed too but does most things left handed but not all.

You can't call it arrogance when you are that great.. it's confidence in his game. He didn't say anything, apparently, that he couldn't backup. I love the respect other players had for him... I'm sure they hated him when they were playing against him.. but years later.. respect.

Larry's dominant shooting hand was his right hand, not his left. He shattered the knuckles in his right hand playing softball before being drafted. He spent the rest of his basketball career including his left hand. But he was NOT left-handed.

Bird was just different. His confidence in his game was on another level. He demanded the ball at the most important times of the game because he believed nobody could stop him, even if he told them what he was about to do, and he would make the shot. These are Hall of Famers talking about Bird and what he did. Show me another NBA player in the history of the NBA that even comes close to doing what Bird did. Yes, there are other great players who wanted the ball, but did they tell the other team what they were going to do before they did it, especially as many times as Bird did?

As a ambidextrous person myself, I experienced my left hand being suppressed by teachers in PUBLIC school (1979, 1980,all the way through second grade, including having my knuckles rapped with a yard stick when I wrote with my Left hand. This was partly because the teachers religious views the left hand was the devil at work. It would not surprise me a bit that Larry experienced the same thing in his small town. Students were taught to conform or else in the times before.

Yep. Most left handed people are ambidextrous to an extent, or at least the ones I’ve known. His right hand was dominant when he was on the court though. He said he’d have to go back to the right if the game got close. But he was definitely left handed off the court.

@@Sunny-jz3dy my left handed mom could do a lot of things with her right hand, as can my niece. Left handed people learn from watching right handed people, as a rule, so they learn to do a lot of stuff right handed. I would assume most people sign with their dominant hand and he definitely signs with his left hand.

Larry was different because he was a smart player who could play 1-5. He understood the game from every position. What made him good was his work ethic. He never gave up on a play, worked on both sides of the ball...he could rebound. pass and shoot the lights out. Watch him shoot, a good portion of his shots don't touch the rim ...that comes from work, muscle memory and taking thousands of shots

Magic told a story about when he was invited to Larrys house while they were shooting a commercial in birds hometown. Larrys mom made them lunch and when she brought it out to them she said "did you tell him yet?" Larry said "No mom you tell him". Birds mother went "Magic, youre my favorite basketball player." all magic said was "Thank you mama Bird!"

Actually Bird is ambidextrous and can use both hands equally. Ever watch him sign an autograph? He signs left handed. But the guys/brothers he played ball with when he was younger helped make his right hand shooting better. But he always shoots with what ever hand is needed based on the situation at the time.
@ContrarianCorner
@ContrarianCorner Ай бұрын
Bird is not ambidextrous. The proper term is 'cross-dominant.' This means he has a dominant hand for different things. I know because I'm the same way. I write with my left hand but play all sports and musical instruments with my right hand. While it's true that Bird developed his left-handed playing to a very high degree, he said himself that when the game got close he switched back to his right (dominant) hand. True ambidexterity is extremely rare and means that a person can perform a given task equally well with both hands. That doesn't describe Bird or anyone else who is cross-dominant.

Larry Bird's 1st coach in the NBA Coach Fitch.... used to call him Kodak! Because of the way Bird saw the game ....his court vision was phenomenal and just blew Coach Fitch out of the water! I know the other players on the team had a problem with the way Coach Fitch did things. But Larry Bird loved him and he made sure that Fitch was there with him.... when he was being inducted in the hall of fame! I thought that was awesome and I know it really touched Fitch that Bird held him in such high regard.

She is correct in saying some people say that Bird is left handed. It’s mainly Bird haters and deniers. I argued with one some time ago and finally said he was right and I was wrong. Then I told him apparently by his description there was a night that Bird had 60 with his off hand. That shut him up

23:22 Not a lot of hatred back then, well, it depends. Most players didn't hate each other but there were exceptions such as Bird and Laimbeer. Most retired players from back then don't hate each other or hold grudges and have left it all on the court. I think players hated losing more back then and there were more fights. I don't get that same feeling of rivalry any more such as the Celtics and Lakers when watching todays games.
