I love how each of Ip Man’s fights become progressively more brutal. The first master who challenges him, he barely leaves a mark on him. The next one, he is a little rougher, beating him but not injuring him. Later, he brutally beats the 10 black belts into a pulp. Finally, he nearly kills the Japanese general. Each fight reveals more about his character and the effect that the war is having on him.
@eklipseempire88072 жыл бұрын
You do realize he actually killed the majority of those black belts right? He didn't merely beat them into coma's he actually managed to kill them. The general he actually had mercy towards because the purpose was to defeat him not kill him.

Couldn’t agree more. I really hope he gives the other 3 a shot, because they’re all phenomenal and honestly just as emotionally impactful, at least for me. Although Ip Man 2 sort of becomes Rocky 4 near the midway point, and the depictions of foreign characters can be laughably cliche and stereotypical at times. But the central conflict of the 3rd film is just incredible. I genuinely teared up watching the last two entries in the series.

@Oliver Windheart I actually think I like 3 & 4 more than 2. Not to say 2’s bad, but the last ones have more emotional weight in my opinion, and still have interesting enough stories plot-wise, particularly with 3. The 2nd one basically turns into Rocky 4 halfway through. Plus most of the foreign characters in the latter half of the series aren’t played by actors half as bad as the English guys in 2. I cannot take them seriously as a threat because of how much they over-act.

There's a lot of WWII movies that we all grew up watching or enjoy seeing. I enjoyed this film because, although the historical setting is fictional in some parts of this movie, it actually does highlight a side of the war we never really see. Japan occupying China during World War II is pretty brutal and is often not really talked about enough. This was one of the first films that really resonated to me, being a Chinese man myself because of the action, the setting, and also diving into the man that trained Bruce Lee. The one that pretty much brought Kung Fu to our current modern culture.

This is a very beautiful movie. On a personal note, it means a lot to my family; I watch this with my dad, his father lived through the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, and my dad was actually a student at Grandmaster Ip Man's school the same time that Bruce Lee was there. I learned wing chun myself from Ip Man's student's student's student. In the movie, the Northern thug mentions the history of wing chun as a martial arts style; it was invented by a woman, Ng Mui, who named it after her first student, Yim Wing-Chun, who learned it in order to defend herself from thugs who tried to force her into an unwanted marriage (there is a movie about the origins of the style that stars Michelle Yeoh as Wing-Chun and Donnie Yen as her love interest). The best thing about this movie is that all the wing chun martial arts is real*. Things like tan sao blocks, rapid-fire chain punching, straight kicks - I was taught how to do all that. The factory workers are shown learning the 1st and 2nd forms (their progress is sped up a bit, it took me 4 years of weekly lessons before I started to learn 2nd form) but the great thing about wing chun is that from your first lesson learning the basic moves, you can start to defend yourself with it. Donnie Yen makes me very proud to see a man fight like a girl ;) *Okay Donnie Yen/the stunt double's backwards split handspring is not wing chun, and a lot of liberties were taken with Ip Man's life for the sake of drama, but the depiction of the martial arts style itself is very authentic.
