Fun Fact:Robert Pattinson's audition/screentest took place while he was in rehearsals for shooting Tenet (2020) in Los Angeles in May 2019. Pattinson had to lie to Christopher Nolan about it, but Nolan, who was no stranger to Batman and Warner Bros., immediately figured it out. Pattinson: "I said I had a family emergency. And as soon as I said it, he goes: 'You're doing the Batman audition, aren't you?'" I feel like not enough people are acknowledging how well written and acted this scene is. Most seem focused on the surface level details like the character design or Barry's voice. I'll admit the former a bit distracting at the end, but still, the scene is such a perfect representation of the Batman/Joker relationship. It's the first time we've really seen them in live action where they aren't just meeting for the first time. They already have an established dynamic, which allows Joker to really get into Bruce's head in said scene. You mentioned a lot of the little details in Barry Keoghan's performance that show he has a true understanding of the character. Really great stuff. Curious to see how he fits in to future films. Contrary to popular belief I think Joker being already cast and a known entity in Gotham was a smart move by WB. Removing the element of buildup to the character I think will ultimately allow other villains to shine even more.

So the foundation is perfectly laid in this movie for the Court of Owls, given that Bruce will likely work with the new mayor and his company to propose a Gotham restoration project that will draw the attention of the Court. With the city flooded, I could see them introducing Waylon Jones a.k.a. Killer Croc as a B villain or antagonist in the first act. With the city flooded I could also see Victor Fries coming in to play, which has always been one of my favorites and I would love a redemption in cinema for that character. They also teased Hush, the reporter that was murdered was named something Elliot, and could have been the father of Thomas Elliot. With the DA killed Gotham will need a new one, and who better than Harvey Dent. He could stick around for the second film and get his rebirth as Two-Face in the third.

Two characters inspired by Riddler, picking up where he left off. One of them, a respected Shakespearean actor and aerial combat vet who leans on the puzzle aspect of crimes, dubbed "The Puzzler". The other, an oologist who rubs elbows with Penguin, masterminding the "recovery" of Gotham while he takes advantage of the flux of power, called "Egghead" due to his genius and oology obsession. Just because Joker is going to be in the movie, doesn’t mean he’s going to be the main villain; the other villains will get their shine. It’s just that Batman is nothing without the Joker, that’s all. I heard people saying that Mr. Freeze is going to be in the sequel. You know, this Joker is similar to the twisted versions of him from the comics and he was born with a birth defect that caused him to have a permanent smile and probably fell into a vat of chemicals, which maybe the reason why he is messed up. And also, this is Batman’s Year Two suit; it’s not official, yet; he doesn’t even have his official tools, yet, either. And to be honest, I think this Batman movie is more comic accurate than the Dark Knight, so I would say they are equal, in my opinion. And this is Bruce Wayne, when he is younger and not a pretend playboy, yet; he’s still trying to get over his traumatic past. And the Bat-mobile is homemade. Also, I don’t see any issue with the ending, I thought it was good.

It’s refreshing as hell to find a person, much less a reactor, who understands that he isn’t supposed to be full on Batman yet. That doesn’t just apply to his detective work and his fighting. It applies to who he is as Bruce Wayne. It applies to his technology. It applies to his approach to criminals and people in general. They are planning a trilogy. There’s literally two more full movies that will be used to develop Bruce and Batman. That’s been Matt Reeves’ whole plan for this series of movies. He understands the characters (for the most part. I wish Riddler was a little more narcissistic, like his comic counterpart, I still liked him). The ending monologue is literally Bruce’s first big step into becoming more (as it’s literally stated by him). Plus, when he gets more involved with Wayne Enterprises, he could meet Lucius Fox, hence he will develop better tech. This movie is the seed and it’s looking like a promising harvest
@McKamikazeHighlander2 жыл бұрын
I think you're missing the point. This IS full-on Bruce Wayne. He might get more experienced but his personality won't really deviate from this. Remember in Batman Begins when they say that Batman is his true face before doing the complete opposite in the next 2 films? Well, THIS is what that trilogy should have been. There is no duality in Bruce's character. The whole 'showy Billionaire playboy' trope isn't Bruce Wayne. That is Tony Stark. Bruce is damaged and emotionally stunted and has no interest in putting on any 'facade' and more importantly, doesn't really need to. Plus, it wouldn't make sense. First, real-life billionaires are rarely seen in public (they're reclusive, like in this film). Second, if he showed his face that often someone would record him and in this age of social media, his voice would be recognizable. As soon as Batman turned up, someone would figure out who he is. And lastly, he literally has no time to adopt some public persona 24/7. As he said, he is a nocturnal animal. This isn't some early take before he "adopts" an alter-ego. This is a 'back to basics' take in which they took that part away entirely. It's a tired trope not present in most of the comics and they don't need it. This is why some people have issues with it - they're standing around thinking "I'll just wait for MY Bruce Wayne to turn up". Tough luck guys, YOUR Bruce was a boring 90s invention (Keaton was a recluse too and his persona remained constant too). This is THE Bruce Wayne
@a_fine_edition2746 Жыл бұрын
The whole point of Bruce’s arc in this film was that he needed to become more than Batman. Entering the public eye and becoming more like the philanthropist from the comics would be a very natural progression for his character. Acting like the playboy facade is trite and not worth exploring, or even that it’s not accurate to the comics is just blatantly untrue. Bruce spends a lot of time dedicated to his charitable exploits. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the next film starts to show him becoming the philanthropist from the comics dedicated to reforming Gotham on BOTH fronts, because that is fundamentally what is at Bruce’s core. Saying there is no duality to the character is very much untrue.

I think the Joker was Batman’s first “big bad” encounter, I hope they use the joker how they did in Arkham Knight (not dying) as a source of info and a guy the Batman can bounce ideas off of throughout the trilogy.

There's a lot of Long Halloween in this movie, with the Serial Killer Young Batman having to Investigate. Even the Salina Kyle being Falcones Daughter thing.

Matt Reeves has said that Joker probably isn't going to be use in the next movie. It's more just a possible preview of something to come somewhere down the line. It's much more likely for them to do someone like Hush, Prof. Pig or Zsasz. I'd also really like to see Two-Face because I'm not a big fan of how they portrayed him in TDK.
@CaptainEnglehorn2 жыл бұрын
The problem with using hush though is that one of the things that made the comic version work was the extensive use of Batman’s rogues gallery by hush (riddler, poison Ivy, joker, Harley, killer croc, scarecrow, clayface) and others such as Catwoman, Oracle, the Al Ghuls, Twoface. hush is like a third or fourth movie you make, not the second.

The Riddler was completely inspired by the Zodiac killer, who was pretty much a real life Riddler. Riddlers mask and some of his dialogue and of course the cyphers etc were all based off the Zodiac. I highly recommend you watch the movie Zodiac with Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr

This is actually the closest I’ve seen to the comics. This is Batman in the early days. He doesn’t have all the crazy tech yet. That comes after his meta human villains start showing up.

28:35 I had the exact same reaction as you while in the Theater both times I saw it, it never gets old. Also the car Bruce modded was a 1969 Dodge Charger. He also drove a very rare 1963 Chevy Corvette split window coupe during the funeral scene. The car’s rare because 1963 was the only year that car had the split rear window.
@adrianrincon87662 жыл бұрын
I totally support your theory about him being in recovery from Bruce's encounter, like he was his first big villain, just laughed maniacally about his crimes, and Bruce (much more vengeful than he is now) snapped and severely disfigured him, probably scared and disgusted of a criminal he couldn't intimidate.

The Joker in this series has a facial deformity. That being the case he has irritable skin that he can’t help but pick at. Hints the blood underneath his nails, his patchy hair etc.

Whats crazy is that the wing suit scene was actually filmed practically. We are just used to seeing such good CGI that our eyes actually don’t like it when things are blurred or out of focus in a lens

This movie has the best shots I’ve seen from a Batman film, the music & character motives I liked. Felt very noir style to me & glad Catwoman got a an actual story this time too instead of being a supporting side character.

Matt Reeves is one of my favorite working filmmakers today. A lot of the best shots in the movie are shots he uses in a lot of his other films. The car mounted shots, the shot in the interior of Penguin’s flipping car, the gunfire lighting the dark room, not being afraid to use dark lighting… you can see it all in his two Planet of The Apes films, Let Me In, etc. and his directing of his actors, and their dialogue is so captivating.

the scene with the bat. Remember how Bruce is scared of them, using that fear as a symbol of his power - he was creeped out having to put his hand in that cage
@Beavis-ej3ny2 жыл бұрын
If they do a second one, I'd like to see a fantastical villian. I get it's supposed to be realistic, but I feel like It would make sense for this series to have someone like Man-Bat or Clayface. For a psychological villian, Mad Hatter, Clock King, or Poison Ivy would be really cool. I think they'll probably bring Riddler and Joker back for the 3rd movie.
@cyberpunkspacejams2 жыл бұрын
I believe I read in an article with Matt Reeves that the Joker appears in the movie only to show how big the threat to Gotham was becoming, not that he was teasing the character for the sequel. Reeves has said that he would like to do Mr. Freeze in the sequel and I am 100% for that. His tragic backstory (best told in the 90's Batman animated series episode "Heart of Ice" and the movie, Sub-Zero) is one of my favorites in the Batman universe.
@AJAspect2 жыл бұрын
Personally, i don't want Scarecrow or Penguin to be the main Villain in the next. I would however love to see someone like Deathstroke or maybe even Mr. freeze. I feel they could make both these characters work well. I like the idea of Riddler and Joker teaming up, but with that underway. I wouldn't want them to be the center of attention(kind of like how Penguin was in this).
@haabat13422 жыл бұрын
This was his year 2 as Batman. He's still learning and yeah,gadget wise was still new and unreliable. The movie is realistic and more grounded. The wingsuit is a thing in real life. He's also still learning to be a great detective which he's known in the future. This is also the beginning of The Penguin and other super villains
@konmosh17232 жыл бұрын
They probably do the Court of Owls in the second movie, hint the court many times in the movie, or maybe they'll set it up for the end of the trilogy. I don't believe the Joker will be in the second movie at all as a villain, it was just to saw us that Joker already exists in this universe. If i had to chose, i'd love to see what Reeves can do with Mr. Freeze or Two-Face.
@Manuelz2 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure the director said that he just wanted everyone to know that joker is out there but he doesn’t even know if he’s ever going to come back to that character. I think he said he wants to have Mr. Freeze as a villain for a sequel

I’ve been binge-watching these reactions for a while now but this is the first time where I noticed something & decided to mention it because I haven’t seen anyone else mention it. Peter Sarsgaard (the DA in this movie) is not related to the Skarsgårds, although many people think he is. Peter is a great Actors who’s been in a lot of films (he was also in “The Green Lantern” as Dr. Hector Hammond). He’s the husband of Maggie Gyllenhaal (who played Rachel in “The Dark Knight) who is the older sister of Jake Gyllenhaal (who played Mysterio in “Spider-Man: Far From Home”). The Skarsgårds are Bill, Alexander, Gustaf & Stellan. Stellan is their father who played Dr. Erik Selvig in the MCU films. Alexander played Eric Northman, the Sheriff of Area 5 in the hit HBO series, “True Blood” (where I fell madly in love with him). Bill played Roman in “Hemlock Grove”, The Boy in Hulu’s “Castle Rock”, & Pennywise in the Horror Films, “It” & “It Chapter Two”. Gustaf played Floki in the popular History Channel series, “Vikings”. I hope this helped people & if it didn’t, at least I got to show off my Cinephile skills 🤣❤️

I wouldn’t be too worried about Joker stealing the spotlight in the sequel. The director said he just threw him in as a little wink to fans, as well as close to off Riddler’s arc (for now) and show how trouble is on the horizon for Batman. Matt Reeves said he wasn’t going to make him the main villain just yet, and actually expressed an interest in doing Mr. Freeze and introducing Robin for the next one, so that has me majorly hyped. We NEED a good Robin on the big screen.

I think the cowl is quite sleek and looks good. But it definitely needs to be more protective like a helmet, rather than leather. One of the best things about this one is the suit. I like that it isnt so rubbery looking like the other suits before. It works so well with all the edgy lines and plating silhouettes.
@dakusupremacy2 жыл бұрын
I really really like the suit. Absolutely hated Batfleck's cause he just straight up looked like a robot 😭
@leonrussell96072 жыл бұрын
@@dakusupremacy he only used that one cause he was fighting superman, his normal suit was pretty cool
@thechad448511 ай бұрын
It’s definitely a modern version of Adam West’s cowl with the square stitched nose, mixed with the comic book cowl for the pointier ears. Knowing how amazing Matt Reeves is as writing growing characters, I have no doubt his cowl and suit will be upgraded throughout the sequels.

You said that is time to give some shine to other villains on Gotham and i cant agree more. This movie took inspiration from Batman: Year One and Two, wich is mostly about Bruce's rampage on common thugs where the villains we all know are still in the background, where the most prominent ones are the mobs like Carmine Falcone and the setup for Court of Owls but that comes later on. If Matt Reeves is following that timeline, then it's safe to say that the next one could be Mr. Freeze, Scarecrow, Two Face and Bane where we deep dive into the Arkham Asylum. Im so hype

Loved the Joker and Ridder. Riddler is one of the based villain in a Jim Carrey's comedic vibe and David Finicher's Seven inspiration. I love Health Ledger RIP, and Jack Nicholson both legendary roles where they bring his own sidekicks in Battle vs Batman. This Batman movie is epic. I didn't like this Ridder.

This movies REALLY impressed me. It’s definitely my favourite Batman so far, he really captured young Batman. Everything was rough like the bat bike, the mobile, the suit, him jumping off the roof for the first time and the black eyes. It just felt really dark and I loved how it ended with him learning the city needed more than vengeance. I don’t think they’ll do Joker next, I’m hoping for Freeze or Scarecrow, imagine a poison Ivy or a robin…would be great!
