Ok so I was confused to at first but basically it’s a German show based on a German book BUT the book takes place in England so that’s why she’s writing in English (sorry if this doesn’t make sense). Also, I LOVE the fact that there’s no dubs bcuz like imo the emotions and words are better expressed in the og language even if I don’t understand it

since you asked: the original language isn't dutch. it should say "deutsch", which is just the german word for german. i get how that'd be confusing though, it happens a lot :D edit: and yeah, those were in fact pounds. in germany we use euros (€). only the spoken language and text messages in maxton hall are german. the rest is english and also taking place in england. i know it's a bit weird, but you'll get used to it lmao also i am _so_ glad you're watching the show in german with subtitles! i mean i have the advantage of being a native german speaker, but i can assure you that the english dub doesn't even come close to the original, especially when it comes to conveying emotions through the characters' voices. i simply (and sadly) cringe way too hard at the english version to watch reactions to it xD plus, i generally always prefer to watch movies and shows in their original languages, even though german dubs tend to be pretty good

I get why people, especially those not from Europe, are confused about the setting. German authors often set their stories in other countries. I guess Mona Kasten chose to set her story in England because, unlike Germany, it's a monarchy with an elite and renowned universities like Oxford, which fits the story better. In England, wealthy families with celebrity status are just normal, while the super-rich in Germany tend to live more private lives and stay under the radar. However, the series' authors didn't stick consistently to the English setting. Ruby write in her notebook in English, and James writes a card to Ruby in English, but their text messages are in German. Plus, the series was filmed both in Germany and England. The whole story is supposed to take place around London, somewhere between London and Oxford.

So glad you are watching this! A good way to think about the show is the story is set in England, but the show is produced by Germans. It is similar to when Hollywood will make a film set in France or a British production company will make a movie set in France, but all the actors speak in English and have an American or British accent. It's just like that. Like the show Reign is set in 16th century France, but they're all British, English speaking actors. Hope that helps!

I think James was so ‘obsessed’ with her because his dad has taught him (as you pointed out) his all life that everyone will try to use his family’s wealth and not to trust anyone? I’m actually German and we speak german (deutsch) . Dutch is the language from the Netherlands. The actors are german too so the series was filmed in german. But because the books are English the producers expected it to be more popular in GB I guess. Also the whole movie plays in England. That would be my idea why the notes are in English.

Amazon shows you the languages in their original languages. And German in German means Deutsch. This looks very similar to Dutch, so I guess that's why you were confused. Dutch is just an English word that people use for people or things from the Netherlands, but the origin of the word Dutch is from Germany, because Germans call themselves Deutsche, Germany means Deutschland in German. It's a bit confusing. But if you click on Deutsch, you will get the original language German. And it is British pounds. The story is set in England. It is based on a German book series, which takes place in England, because the book market in Germany prefers stories that are not set in Germany for some reason🤷🏽‍♀️ I hope that cleared some things up🤗

There was a little confusion because of the language you are listening to. Don't know if somebody answered so far but here's my answer to you. The original language and the one that you hear in those episodes is German. Our country is called Deutschland 🇩🇪 and we call our language Deutsch. Our neighbour are the Netherlands 🇳🇱 and they call their language Nederlands but in English it's Dutch. As far as I know, a Dutch version of the series doesn't even exist. Unfortunately, Dutch (Nederlands) and German (Deutsch) are two different languages. I was a bit confused about this when I started learning English, just like you're right now 😂 Hope I was able to help 😊

so to clarify the confusion: the show is set in england (that’s why they have english names,british pounds,etc.) however the show is based on a trilogy written by a german author and therefore the actors are german and the whole production is german and the school for example is a castle in germany😌oh and the currency in germany is euros

It's so funny how annoyed with James every reactor is at the start. I completely get it I agree he is insufferable but he just can't comprehend why a poor scholarship student whose backpack is literally ripping apart won't accept thousands of dollars worth of money. I see it as he and his family are used to people doing whatever they can to gain/take advantage of their wealth and fame so it's hard for James to believe Ruby truly wants nothing to do with him. Seeing her suddenly talking to his best friend when he's never noticed her unsettled him.

I totally agree and I also think that a lot of people miss that at no point does Ruby actually tell him that she’s not going to say anything! Which I dislike more and more each time I rewatch. If she just said: “ I don’t want your money: I’m not gonna say anything; it’s none of my business and I want nothing to do with any of it. Stay the hell away from me.” The show could still continue on the same course because, let’s face it, James would probably not be able believe her anyway, because of the way he’s been raised and his past experiences, and it would make her far more sympathetic. Yes, James is an arrogant, entitled ass in the beginning but I can totally see why this and some of Harriet’s acting choices, (to play their interactions very smirky and coy) would lead him to believe that this was a game they were both playing.

I was also confused cause the show played in English and I knew the actor “James”is German so I was confused I and I couldn’t find the German audio so I ended up choosing deutsch cause it sounded German but looked Dutch😭😭and google wasn’t explaining either but I texted my German friend who eventually explained the whole thing to me It was such a long journey 🤣🤣

Don’t watch it in English- the dubbing is really bad. The subtitle translations are better. It’s and adaptation of a German book set in England. The Beauforts are billionaires and each of the kids have over 1000 hits in the tabloids at any one time. So they are super paranoid because everyone wants something from them. You know how you watch movies set for example in France let's say. Take the movie Ever after with Drew Barrymore as an example, its set in France and the characters are French but they are not speaking in French they are speaking in English....its an american produced movie, so its in English so the American audience can understand and as its an american movie they use mostly american actors...... why are there ads on amazon? cuz jeff is a greedy bastard that wants more money. we literally already have to pay for amazon prime to watch amazon orginals but we also have to pay extra/individually to watch the other non-amazon original movies and shows that are on there instead of like Netflix where there's both originals and other movies and they both come with the subscription. AND netflix doesn't even have the added money coming in from a store like Amazon does that people are constantly buying from. it doesn't make sense to me.
