There are girls out there far worse than Regina, growing up in private schools I had the displeasure of meeting some and holy shit these b!tches were vicious, and I mean like actual sociopaths. Regina was really just a privileged, spoiled, angry, entitled teenager lashing out and being a bully to make herself feel better about her own insecurities, which every teen has, no matter how beautiful they may seem to others. There's even a scene when she looks in the mirror and says she "hates how her knees look" and that her pores look disgusting, even though she has the most perfect skin anyone could possibly have. Regina is the stereotypical mall brat who was never told "No" by her parents as a child, so if anything the parents are the ones to blame for her behavior. In the end of the film you can tell that she matured and grew out of that princess/plastics bs. Petty much everyone I know has at some point cringed thinking back at their younger selves, myself included. This movie is really just about dumb teenagers finally growing up and maturing into intelligent adults.

I don't mean to sound sexist but this movie was massive in helping me and some other guys I know relate to what high school was like for girls. Obviously it's exaggerated but every high school movie is. This movie is hilarious (massive props to Tina Fey) and genuinely connects with everyone. Happy to see a story from a female perspective where women can be the hero and the villain and it not suck.

This movie exaggerates nothing. The main reason this movie hits so hard is because because the dialogue is so accurate to how girls and women talk about each other. It’s a little too accurate. I was a teen in the early 2000s and it’s accurate.

Mean Girls was actually based off of a parents self-help book 'Queen Bees and Wannabes' by Rosalind Wiseman, which contained real quotes from teen girls about the toxic behaviors and cliques they dealt with in school. Even the assembly they have at the end is a more dramatized version of real interventions Wiseman did at schools. So yes, some girls really are like this!

@GeneralGrievousCIS
@GeneralGrievousCIS Ай бұрын
I think the confusion stems from the (factual) notion that abstinence, or at least being very selective/sparring in your partnerships, is as safe as it gets. Handing out condoms in class (rather than just explaining what they are and where to get them, even if that were a free offering somewhere else in school) just implies that all that earlier talk about holding off on sex was hot air because you (the teacher) expect to be ignored anyway. Could send the wrong message. Tbh, I feel like handing out condoms in class these days is also perhaps politically problematic/incorrect, at least for a public school. There will likely be religious minority students who's faiths promote chastity and handing one of those kids a condom might be wildly offensive (to them and/or their parents) if it comes across as an assumption by the school that the kid is going to grievously sin. Islam, LDS-Christian, Hinduism, Sikhism, etc. Again, I'd imagine it better just to direct students to collect from a bin in a student welfare/counselors reception office "if they feel they'll need one/can't avoid it"
@sarahhughes4437

There’s a picture in my high school year book (in a spread re:fashion) from 1990 where I seriously look like a stand-in from that movie-dressy skort w/jacket, tights, etc-I just needed a croquet mallet. Lol My own daughter (now almost 18) also loves this movie, and I’m not even the one who introduced her to it; she just generally loves the fashion, entertainment, etc of the eighties and nineties. One day several years ago I got a random text from her during class: a picture of a red scrunchie around her wrist and just the words “I am Heather Chandler.” Lol It’s just odd, having inside jokes about cultural references to 80s movies with a kid born in 2007.

I will add that this is a difficult movie to watch while doing commentary because a lot of key dialogue can be missed. Like when you questioned Aaron and Cady saying “grool”, it was a callback to when Aaron invited her to the Halloween party in the beginning. She responded by saying “grool” as she was going to say “great”, but changed her mind at the last moment to say “cool” and ended up blending the two words. The weather thing at the end with Karen is a callback to her conversation with Cady when she asked if she wanted to see her put her whole fist in her mouth. She also stated that her breasts can tell when it’s raining 😆 silly things like this is why the movie has so much rewatch value. You can miss a lot if you’re not paying attention.

Reginas exist. I used to teach English at a public junior high in Japan and I clocked at least 2 Regina-likes across different grades. One was more of the "perfect princess" type (spoiled, hyper-obsessed with her own appearance, used to always getting her way and gets nasty when you don't cave in) and the other was the "manipulator w/ girl squad" type. The latter was particularly bad with the way she bullied her classmates in the open with a mask of fake friendliness and belittled the main teacher with backhanded compliments and a smile (he was too dense to catch onto her). The "princess" girl was thankfully too dumb and self-obsessed to be much of a danger to her classmates, but the "manipulator" girl was pretty notorious among the teachers who had any social savvy at all.

What Adison means is and he’s right, fear mongering teens with abstinence is counterproductive. Which is something a lot of southern schools do which is why teen pregnancy is at a higher rate in those states. Specifically Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama, and Texas with the highest teen pregnancy rates of all. Just provide proper and comprehensive sex education, while speaking about sex in clinical manner, and make sure unexpired protection is available.

it might seem counter productive, bt it works as long as you look at all the data. I'm a political research analyst and we've had to do work for clients before during elections when creating campaigns that do have a focus on parental involvement and curriculum regarding sex ed classes and education. They were some of the most stark definitive results I've ever seen, (very little margin of error ), but ultimately states that have an "Abstinence Only" curriculum, in other words no eplanations of how sex works, how birth control works and where to get it, no information on terminating pregnancies, and more importantly nothing on STD's beyond "YOU WILL DIE", those areas had signifigantly higher instances of teen pregnancy, STD outbreaks and full epidemics, sexual assault crimes (especially crimes being reported at least 1 year after the assault), domesic assault and reliance on social welfare along with single parent households who rely on welfare. Sex is a biological urge, in fact its one of the strongest, second only to basic personal survival, sex is survival o the species. The STD thing is the worst, they have no idea how they spread, what symptoms are, and more importantly most of them are way to afraid of a positive STD diagnosis or test result getting back to their parents (many arent aware that theres doctor patient confidentiality involving sex even if they're a minor). As a result they'll remain sick with it for months if not years causing symptoms to become exasperated and since they have little to no info they dont realize they're spreading it to anyone else their with. STD epidemics happen in startlingly high numbers in the bible belt. So it may SEEM counter productive, but realistically speaking they're gonna do it no matter what, its in our dna, we might as well make sure they can do it safely.

I already added a comment but ngl yeah we had like 2 coaches that had relations with students… crazy work. Smoked weed with one teacher before school even started- he was a friend of my older cousins and it was summer. Walked into that class and both our faces turned white 🤣

The Sears joke is because Sears is a big box chain store & not an expensive boutique. It sold clothes but she would not have found an expensive big name either brand prom dress there, also especially since expensive shops for women also often only had small sizes & she couldn't fit into the 5. So the diss to go find something at Sears to fit her when she was "fat."

I'm gay and back in high school I was friends with the popular girls and I have to say that they are like this, once one of their friends flirted with a guy that another girl liked and they started to turn on that girl, they started telling her secrets to others and on her birthday they put laxatives in her drink, after this I started to distance myself from them. They were extremely manipulative and evil to each other and also with other people, even to the poor guys they were into, it didn't help that their parents were rich and they let them do what they want, they were throwing crazy parties, going on expensive vacations and their parents funded everything. I have girls and straight guys friends, I have to say that the guys are saints in comparison, lol.

Right I remember the girls doing the 3 way calling thing when i was like 7th grade .. where you'd have just like they did you talk about one and the other girl would be silently on 3 way.. and then you would say see I told you this is what she said about you or thought about you. This bs why I started only hangjng around boys

I watched this for the hell of it because I caught it on cable when it was just starting. I had no idea about the anthropological angle of it, and that hit me intellectually. It's like My Fair Lady being about grammar as much as an unconventional family or musical numbers.

Thank you for the reaction, Adison! "Grool" was callback to maths class when Cady said "cool" and "great" at the same time, so it came out as "grool". I'd like to recommend the movie "Accepted", I haven't seen anyone react to it yet.

I hate when people bring up “Regina think Janice is a lesbian because she’s Lebanese” it literally has nothing to do with her being Lebanese??? She explains EXACTLY why she thinks Janice is a lesbian to Cady right before Cady buys the candy canes, did all the people bringing this up actually watch the movie? 🤣 Also, I know this is a small thing, but it pisses me off 😂

The remake isn’t actually a remake. It’s the movie version of the Broadway musical of Mean Girls. As a fan of the musical myself… the movie is… not good. It wasn’t terrible, it’s just not as good as the original movie or the stage musical. It was also marketed terribly, sort of hiding the fact that it was a musical. Also, the double or even triple shirt was very popular in the mid-2000s. I wore like 2 tank tops under a shirt to have layers at the bottom. 😂 And guys did the double or triple collar… popped. 😂

We hand out condoms bc we know teens are gonna do it anyway. Generally speaking, a lot of teens don’t listen when you give them advice about abstaining from sexual relationships, so it’s better to encourage safe sex than let them do it unprotected and risk STIs/pregnancy. It’s harm reduction. (No judgement on your opinion, just thought I’d clarify since I have experience in the sex ed world)

On the sex ed topic, they were teaching safe sex.. not abstinence? So handing a condom makes sense. They’re informing you of all of the risks and then equipping you with a tool you will need to lower the risk of contracting diseases.

My daughter was home schooled after 8th grade. She’s in her senior year of college now, she had some issues socially at first until she found her people. Karate and Anime clubs on campus. Because of COVID. She’s still home, but she’s out quite a bit. Grew up well rounded and just fine.

Wild you reacted to this. Good on you hah. I’m from Liverpool UK Strange to some but it is very common phrase to refer to people as ‘hun, lad , babe, girl, chic, darling, sweetie, mate, fella, for friends and strangers. I am working class so there will be differences between classes and generations. 90s generation have 90% lost saying ‘sir’ and madam’ ‘mis’ to older folks. I prefer to say sir with older men. it’s Werid to refer to an older man as mate if it’s not a joke but trust me it happens every day.
