This concert "Mosters of Rock" which included The Black Crows, Pantera, Metallica, and AC/DC had roughly 1.6 million people and 54 or 56 deaths was a reward by the Russian Government because ordinary unarmed civilians came to the defense of Moscow when high ranking military personnel tried to stage a coup to change Russia back into the Soviet Union

This was an incredible year in world history. A couple years prior the Berlin Wall came down and then came the fall of the USSR and all it's Soviet ideology. In June of 1991, at 19 years old, I met then president of Russia, Mikhail Gorbachev when he came to the states after all of that. Long story but this all marked the end of the cold war which had hung over daily life for my entire life and long before. Now we have Putin trying to bring that all back. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. This concert also marked a significant moment in history. The first rock concert in Russia ever. You can see it in every one of those faces in the crowd. To see every day people like me in Russia waving an American flag brought tears to my eyes. We were taught to hate each other all the way up to this point. Incredible and amazing time to be alive. It makes me choke up now just thinking about it. I'm seeing some comments about not going back to studio Metallica. Personally, I do not agree with that, at all. I always recommend studio first, hearing it the way most people on the planet first heard it. Then going back and hearing how amazing they are live.

You should read The White Pill by Michael Malice. Fantastic book. His book Dear Reader is also a must read if you're interested in this space. Putin is anticommunist. He's more fascist and religious oligarch. Don't mistake all Russian strongmen for Stalin. Other countries have political diversity just like we do. For me (and just me) "Harvester Of Sorrow" is the one that blew my mind from this show. The studio cut was sorta "meh..." for me......but the moment I saw that performance, it went to my top 5 favorites. The energy level, even 30-some years later, was something I had never experienced before. It's well worth a watch. Just stretch your neck muscles beforehand 😁.

This performance was an add-on the the already in progress of the "Monsters of Rock" tour taking place in '91. To try and stop the ongoing coup taking place in Russia, the government tried to reach an accord to end it. When asked what they wanted, they responded with, "we want Western Music". The calls were made, and the show added. Jason Newsted (Metallica bassist) had commented afterwards "I'm not sure if we even got paid for that show" Regardless, it's one of the most important concerts in history. It was shortly after this that the Iron Curtain had come down. 1.6+ million people 53 deaths Germany tried so hard in the 40's to do what 8 guys from the US did in one day.

The Helicopters were flying over to help cool off the crowd. I was lucky enough to see the Germany leg of this our, like a show or two before this one. This is the same show as the Pantera "Domination" video the other day, AC/DC were the headliners. The song yes is about nightmares, but because of the Bedtime Stories, I mean come on some of those were VERY GRIMMMMM! This was the first full booked western rock show, kinda paved the way from the Moscow Music Peace Festival just before this show. The Scorpions have a great video from that festival, called "Wind Of Change" if you watch that you will kinda see what was going on at that time, also that song is a once in an era type piece, The Scorpions are a Rock band but this is a ballad.

This is the song that eventually made Metallica my favorite band! What I love about them is when they perform live, they don't mess around with the song. There are tiny changes here and there but they play it like sounds on the album. James said in an interview that's how fans like it so they stick with that formula. Great reaction Stax!

Stax, the og video would probably give you a better idea visually about the song but you were on the right path. I had seen the video for One back in the day but never got AJFA. When thus single led the the launch of The Black Album, I HAD to get a copy. I got someone to dub that tape for me and man, I was hooked on that album, it's also, kind of like you alluded to, a great gateway song/album fir getting into metal.

To fully appreciate this, you MUST know the full story. Simplified version: American music was ILLEGAL in the USSR. The only way to listen was to smuggle in bootleg tapes and quietly listen in your frigging basement or some shit. When the military attempted a takeover of the country, THE YOUTH and ordinary citizens went full on Red Dawn and helped save their damn country. When asked what they wanted as a GIANT THANK YOU… did they ask for money? No. They said “We want American metal. WE WANT METALLICA!” So the government flew some bands into Moscow and had a free show at an airbase. Tens of thousands of military soldiers were brought in as security… and, as you can see in the video, some of them stripped off their uniforms and joined the crowd. THEY STOPPED COUNTING at 1.6 million people. It’s estimated that there was upwards of 2.5 million people in attendance. This was not just a concert. This was an entire People celebrating a freedom they had never known. This was liberation. Pure fucking joy. There were MAJOR changes happening in the world. And this moment is HISTORIC. You should absolutely check out the documentary or read a few articles or something. EVERYONE should know this story… especially now with what is (again) happening in Russia and around the world. ☮️
