Fun fact about newborn turtles: a big thing that's always made clear is that if you're going to help them find the water, you absolutely cannot carry them there. They have to find it on their own. The scene at the beginning is essentially how Moanas journey ends up going out on the ocean. She may have been pointed in the right direction, but ultimately she had to do it on her own.

The grandma is one of my all-time favorite characters. She is so well portrayed. It is my, personal, head canon that the reason that the Grandma knew so much about the heart and the ocean was that the ocean offered her the heart, as a child, as well, and she turned it down to stay with her people and she always regretted it. That was why she understood the significance of the ocean offering it to Moana and why she kept the heart and tried to prepare Moana for what she needed to do. And that would be why she was, immediately, came back as a manta and was Moana's guide. It could even be that her Father was given the chance as well, and is why his friend died. If you notice, when Moana showed him the heart there was no surprise in his eyes at all. It made him madder.

This movie centers around Polynesian beliefs. I grew up in Hawaii and from a young age, we were taught all about the different Gods and Goddesses. It is actually very interesting and I would honestly recommend checking out some traditional Polynesian stories. We also were taught how to make canoes and how to read the stars. I really love that my school was really dedicated to teaching us our culture.

Ever notice grandma was always there. When Moana found the Heart grandma was in the bushes keeping an eye on her keeping the Heart for years until she was ready. When she first tried to sail beyond the reef and got caught in the coral grandma was there. When Moana was at her lowest and had failed, grandma was there to give her inspiration. She let Moana explore the world, kept an eye on her from afar but stepped in when she was needed. Grandma is the GOAT.

Thank you Maui, for fishing up the North Island on New Zealand! And for giving us fire. And for slowing down the sun, giving us longer days *edit* His hook wasn't 'made' by the gods, Maui took the jawbone of his grandmother and made the hook out of that. He's generally seen as a benevolent 'trickster' god. Always taking shortcuts and putting himself first, but still managing to get a good result for those around him...mostly

Absolutely fantastic movie and we have the magic Lin-Manuel Miranda (Encanto, Hamilton, In the Heights) to thank for the soundtrack. If you have not watched Hamilton, then I would absolutely recommend that for a reaction. In terms of Disney, then Frozen and Frozen II are essential - I prefer the latter but I’m aware that’s controversial. And with regard to Dwayne Johnson, I love his movie San Andreas; one of my very favourites. Keep up the great reactions and thank you!

The soundtrack for Moana wasn’t all Lin Manuel I love him though. However, the overall research Disney did involved Pacific Islanders, which is our culture that the movie Moana is based on. Opetaia Foa’i a music legend in the Pacific Islands had a massive input with the songs and soundtrack of the movie. He leads a music group called Te Vaka who have been active for years. The song in the very beginning of the movie called Tulou Tagaloa was written and composed by Opetaia sung by Te Vaka and other songs that aren’t in English were by Tevaka, like the song “Logo Te Pate” that’s played during the time Maui and Moana were training, and the song “Loimata e matagi” that was played when baby Moana was playing with ocean when the heart first appeared. Opetaia also voiced the chief that starts the song “We know the way” that started and sung in Pacific island languages. Also, another musical legend named Igelese Ete in the Pacific Islands lead a Fijian group that sung background voices that’s played during the time when Te Fiti’s heart was restored. Also the background at 8:35 of this video 🥰🫶🏽 but indeed Lin Manuel is a genius

If I recall, the line "The chicken lives!" was a reference to a point in development when they planned to scrap the chicken from the movie. After a board meeting they decided to keep it, and someone exclaimed "The chicken lives!", and people thought it was funny so they decided to add it to the actual movie.

It is New Zealand. Known as Aotearoa to the original islanders the Maori who sailed from Polynesia,. Aotearoa, The Land of the Long White Cloud (which it often is). It's one of those Westerly breezes being pushed upwards by the mountains which run North to South. But that's because it is a subduction zone where one tectonic plate is forced below the other. Warning. Earthquakes.

Gotta do Onward as well. Onward and Big Hero 6 are my top two animated ones. Moana is up there too, but I like Onward more. Also fun fact.. The chicken is "voiced" by Alan Tudyk, the same guy that played the robot from Rogue One. He's in a bunch of random disney movies and you can never tell that it's him. Rogue One is the closest to his actual voice. I watched an interview with Dwayne Johnson a while back where he talked about doing the singing. Sounded like they didn't even know he could sing before casting him but he absolutely loves karaoke so he was pretty stoked. A lot of the time the voice actor and the singer are different people, but he did both.

2:37 Since the dawn of life itself, that is from the genetic and cellular level all the way through to neurology and self-awareness, our instincts have evolved to develop an affinity for water-rich environments. The reason any animal is attracted to shiny, glimmering things is because fresh water is the original shiny, glimmering object. Waves at the seashore are the original ASMR. Everything within our being is less stressed when we're near big water, as we're more than half built of that stuff and it keeps evaporating.

I loved this movie when I first saw it and thought it was beautiful. Then my nephew was born with a heart defect and needed a transplant. He loved Moana, so it became more than just a movie to me - it was an extension of him. I used to sing Know Who You Are, especially the words "They have stolen the heart from inside you, but this does not define you" to him. Unfortunately he passed away at 1 year old and watching Moana is hard sometimes - it's part of him though so I still get through it.

It isn’t explained well because they choose to make a joke out of it, but I think the idea that if the water is warm, you’re going in the right direction comes from the fact that they’re heading towards an active volcanic region or in this case lava monster. Now you could say no at that point they’re still heading to the realm of monsters, but it seems as though it might be on the way, or maybe in the same direction. So in my mind that’s the best explanation.

Seb, you'd probably enjoy The Rock in one of his early films "Rumble in the Jungle" with Sean William Scott (Stiffler from American Pie) - It's really fun!

Kid, honestly I could go on and on I could explain every natural phenomenon The tide, the grass, the ground Oh, that was Maui just messing around I killed an eel I buried its guts Sprouted a tree, now you got coconuts What's the lesson? What is the takeaway? Don't mess with Maui when he's on a breakaway And the tapestry here on my skin Is a map of the victories I win Look where I've been I make everything happen Look at that mean mini-Maui just tickety-tappin

The way they made the big, bad monster the devolved version of the mother island (islands start out as lava erupted out of underwater volcanoes that cools and eventually makes its way to the surface, I believe I have my science right there) hit me like a ton of bricks when I first realized it. Like of course they had a source of magic to restore her life force, but still, there was thought put behind that creation myth.
