Storyline
Bill Gambini and Stanley Rothenstein are two friends from New York University who just received scholarships to UCLA. They decide to drive through the South. Once they arrive in Alabama, they stop at a local convenience store to pick up a few snacks. But, no sooner than they leave the store, they are arrested. They had thought that they were arrested for shoplifting, but they were arrested for m****r and robbery. Worse, they are facing exe****on for this crime. Bill and Stan do not have enough money for a lawyer, so the good news is that Bill has a lawyer in his family, his cousin, Vincent Laguardia Gambini. The bad news is that Vinny is an inexperienced lawyer who has not been at a trial. So, Vinny has to defend his clients and battle an uncompromising judge, some tough locals, and even his fiancée, Mona Lisa Vito, who just does not know when to shut up, to prove his clients' innocence. But he will soon realize that he is going to need help

@@RyanCarringtonthere's this Hollywood gossip myth that the presenter couldn't pronounce the name of the person whose name was in the card so they chose Marissa, but it is most surely based on the fact that comedic roles are usually not recognized by prestige awards and just plain old misoginy, but actually it is very common for pretty it girls to win Oscars over plain looking working actress.

@@carlalussini - Dear child, let's examine the playing field in 1992. Who should have won Best Supporting Actress? Maybe Joan Plowright should have won for her soap-opera grade acting in the box office flop "Enchanted April"? Or maybe Judy Davis, for her entirely forgettable role in the entirely forgettable film "Husbands and Wives"? Or maybe Miranda Richardson should have carried home a trophy for her hammy acting in the cheesy film "Damage"? I suppose they could have given the thing to Vanessa Redgrave, for playing an old matriarch of a British family in the yawn-fest "Howard's End"? She's a decent actress, but was basically just playing herself... the same role she always plays. But yes dear... it MUST have been a patriarchal scheme perpetrated by the 10,000 plus members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. All the actors, actresses, set designers, composers, directors, etc... they ALL teamed up to vote and give the award to an unheard of newcomer who had previously only done bit parts in TV shows. Or maybe... just maybe... Marisa Tomei CARRIED this film, which (unlike all the other films I named) people are still watching, still reacting to, some 30 years later. And maybe a side character CARRYING a film... is the best definition of a 'supporting' actor/actress.

One of those movies that I can watch any time without getting tired of it. One thing I always appreciate is that there are no actual villains in this (aside from the actual murderers, who we never see). The sheriff, witnesses, the opposing lawyer, the judge -- they all are genuinely interested in doing what's right, and think Vinny is defending obviously guilty clients. Even better for the story's sake, they don't have to be portrayed as comically stupid, either -- while incredibly unlucky for the boys, everything points at them and any reasonable person could believe they did it. That, plus Vinny and Lisa's chemistry is fantastic, with the right edge of bite and affection.

I’m a short man. Growing up I thought settling for the role of funny “little guy” was going to be my lot in life. My first year of middle school gave me my first bully. For half that year I was absolutely miserable. Then, one day - home sick with a temp of 102.9, I caught “Goodfellas” on day time cable TV. The toughest wise guy there wasn’t a six foot tall mass of muscle and scars. It was Joe mudda’fuggin Pesci. “Am I a clown? Do I _amuse_ you?” I know it sounds stupid, and if you stopped reading a paragraph ago I wouldn’t blame you. It’s just, from that moment on, I stopped letting my height define me. All because I saw a little dude stand up for himself. From Casino, to My Cousin Vinny, Joe Pesci showed me I could be whatever the hell I wanted to be. Yeah, I know, stupid. True though. Back in the old days of R-rated non-gross out comedies. My parents brought 9 year old me to this movie in cinemas lol. Grits are basically polenta, though the corn is treated in a chemical process to preserve it (from back when preservation was difficult). That process turns the corn white, so the cooked grits are pale compared to polenta. Like polenta, grits are as good as the flavourings added to them.

There actually was no minimum age for the death penalty in Alabama in 1992 (though in practice they didn't put anyone under 16 on death row) and in 2005 the Supreme Court made it illegal in all states to give the death penalty to someone for a crime committed before they turned 18. I mentioned this on your community post as well, but it is absolutely wild that there was a long-standing rumor that Marisa Tomei's name was called by accident when she won an Oscar for this movie. It's true that the Academy, unfortunately, almost never acknowledges comedies, but all you have to do is see the movie and know she gives a deserving performance. She's so funny in the movie. Also, many will probably tell you -- they might have told you already! -- that this movie is routinely cited as one of the most accurate in depicting the courtroom process.

The judge is played by Fred Gwynne. He began as an illustrator and (later) a Broadway actor, but rose to fame in the 1960s - first as Francis Muldoon in "Car 54, Where Are You?", then as Herman Munster in "The Munsters". Despite his towering 6'5" height, his acting range was broad enough to go from endearing to quirky to terrorizing to hilarious with scarcely a breath between. Sadly, he passed away from pancreatic cancer barely a year after his role as Judge Chamberlain Haller in "My Cousin Vinny". This performance, perhaps most of all, is a testament to his acting skills as he was often in agonizing pain between takes but not a bit of his suffering was apparent while he was on the set.

"It is possible that the two yutes..." "...Ah, the two what? Uh... uh, what was that word?" "Uh... what word?" "Two what?" "What?" "Uh... did you say yutes?" "Yeah, two yutes." "What is a yute?" "Oh, excuse me, your honor... Two YOUTHS." I love this movie. There's no real bad guy in this movie (except if you consider the real murderers) and once the innocence of Bill and Stan becomes clear, all charges are dropped. Fun Fact: The misunderstanding between Vincent Gambini and Judge Haller (Fred Gwynne) regarding the two "youts" was in fact a real conversation between Joe Pesci and director Jonathan Lynn. Lynn, who is British, at first had a hard time understanding Pesci's pronounced New York accent. He decided that the routine was quite funny and put it in the film. Wise Owl Fact: According to director Jonathan Lynn, the eastern screech owl in the scene in the woods was a real owl that had a little prior training so it wouldn't be scared away by the gunfire. The crew got it to open its mouth by giving it little pieces of beef, and artificially induced screeches were added to the film in post production. The owl's reaction to Vinny (Joe Pesci) shooting the gun was authentic and needed only one take. Law Enthusiast Fact: Director Jonathan Lynn actually has a law degree and insists the film's legal proceedings be realistic. In fact, many attorneys and law professors have praised the film for its accurate depiction of trial strategy and courtroom procedure, especially with regards to presenting expert witnesses at trial. In fact, the film has been screened at some law schools to illustrate courtroom procedures. The American Bar Association's publication, the ABA Journal, ranked the film #3 on its list of the 25 Greatest Legal Movies.

That accent from Tomei is pure Brooklyn Italian, as thick as mama's marinara. You find variations of it in the west-end boroughs of greater New York and in New Jersey. It's a bit like London Cockney. Pesci sounds more Long Island to me. Pesci has so often been cast the scary mobster type that the line "I'm really e-scared" is real acting on his part. We already knew he could be funny from "Home Alone". Yes, Tomei is lava hot throughout this movie. Wardrobe had a great time with her.

In rural America there are often signs for people wanting fill dirt. America is huge, most of it was sparsely populated until a little over 100 years ago and has a lot of elevation changes. So moving dirt from one place to another in order to level an area, fill in holes or add top soil for agriculture is pretty common. It definitely is a rural thing, though. It never occurred to me that it wasn't a thing in other countries until your comments tbh.

I was kinda half joking because the concept of selling earth is kind of amusing to me. But the thing that really made me laugh was that it was just marketed simply as 'dirt' and was being sold on dirt at the side of the road 😅 And with the next sign reading free manure, that just made it for me 😂

My neighbor in NJ would buy truckloads of dirt AKA "topsoil" to level his lawn every summer. Landscape companies sell "mushroom dirt," topsoil and "clean fill." Lows and Home Depot sell bags of dirt and potting soil as well.🤦‍
@RyanCarrington
@RyanCarrington Жыл бұрын
It was a tongue in cheek comment about me finding the selling of dirt to be quite amusing, especially in this context when they forwent the bells and whistles and just called it what it was. When you buy 'dirt' over here, it's got about 5 names to remove the idea that you're actually just purchasing, well, dirt and it's not sold at the side of the road, on dirt 😂 My dryness can be confusing.

The judge, played by Fred Gwynne, is kind of a legend for baby-boomers and gen-x kids in the U.S. He played Herman Munster on a favorite 1950s/1960s sitcom which continued to run in reruns through the 1980s. I'm sure it's on streaming somewhere. Very unique and funny show. Mr. Gwynne also graduated with a law degree from Harvard. So, this was just such a great role to see him play. He played it perfectly, too.

@@kimmyfreak200 Crows famously despise hawks. I've seen a dozen crows harass a red-tail mercilessly for as long as it took to get it to leave. They risked their lives repeatedly to peck and scratch at it. A couple of the crows got bit, it looked like. I suspect hawks eat the unwary among them and their young. Famous beef there, whatever the cause.

In deleted scenes you find out that Vinny is dyslexic and that’s why it was hard for him to pass the bar and read that law book. All the law enforcement, witnesses, and judge and lawyer are actually doing their job well based on the evidence they had before them. When they find out they’re wrong , they immediately switch gears rather than buckle down and try to pin it on the innocent. The judge was actually not out of turn to be so hard on Vinny, it’s considered and insult to be so unprofessional and ill prepared and it takes up valuable time in a bogged down court system. When he was stopping Vinny with the witness, it was because it could be deemed harassment of he witness to keep on like that. I love this movie and Marisa Tomei is everyone’s favorite.

The fact he's an out-of-state lawyer is possibly why he needed to lie about his accomplishments. A lawyer can receive permission from a judge to practice on a limited time basis out of state, but for charges with capital punishment, they'd almost never grant it to a newbie lawyer, and, according to Quora, in many states, a lawyer must receive additional certification to argue such cases.
