I was going to put this in the comments because is SO TRUE!!! As a spanish speaker I grow up reading subtitles and watching amazing movies (like Cinema Paradiso, Les Choristes, Old Boy, The Lives of Others, Let the Right One In, City of God, Bicycle Thieves, etc) and it's kinda sad that "english speakers" just... don't do it :(

Regarding your question about him being able to buy the house, this is a little sad easter egg in the end credits song that the director wrote. "The song was originally supposed to be titled '564 years', because according to the director, realistically that's how much time it would take for Ki-woo to earn enough money to buy that house, making it a dream which neither he nor his children can fulfill."

The movie made a point about plans. The father told his son, during the night they slept at the shelter, that plans never work in the end. Although the ending is open to interpretation, cutting back to the son in the present time monologing about his "plan", only heavily implies it will not work out.

The wild thing is, the poor family wasn't even stealing. Yeah they scammed their way into their jobs, but they were legitimately performing what they were paid to do.
@ItDoesntMatterReally
@ItDoesntMatterReally 3 жыл бұрын
The way they came about those jobs wasn't exactly honest either. They forged certification, they cost other people their jobs, and even almost killed a woman just to get mom in the mix. That's part of the whole narrative though. It's about the desperation of the lower class who'd go as far as to harm one another to gain an inch while those who have whole miles flaunt it over them and treat them less than human. What really hurts about this film is that there really isn't a bad guy other than the societal constructs that place each person into their role. There's nothing malicious about the rich family, and the poor family's just trying to get away from living in squalor by cheating a system that's wronged them. It's truly a complex narrative.

Actually there are so many metaphors in this film. If you observed the poor family lives in a basement and the way going there is by going down further while the rich lives in a high places. A metaphor of how poor are the lowest class while the rich are at the top. Another one is the rain. While the rain seems a blessing for the rich, it's actually a nightmare for the poor. It shows how something like rain is just a minor convenience or a "blessing in disguise" for the rich, it creates havoc for the poor. This movies has so many underlying pictures and meaning about the rich and the poor.

I'm always amazed at how many people misinterpret the parasites as the main characters and not the rich family. It's a superficial reading of the events. To be clear, the thesis of the movie is that capitalism makes parasites of us all.
@hjc4289
@hjc4289 3 жыл бұрын
The definition of a parasite is something that takes from a host without giving anything back. The rich family are paying their employees a good wage and in the case of the house keeper, a permanent home. How are they parasites? They are not even exploiting them, they are employing them and giving them quite a good life
@germanher7528
@germanher7528 3 жыл бұрын
@@hjc4289 quite a few critics found the two (actually three) families being parasites, btw a parasite usually gives something back (in nature) as its relation to the host is usually sinergistic, for example Remora feed on Sharks' food leftovers while swiming around it, in exchange they clean the Shark's skin and keep it clear from other health threats
@DaCarnival
@DaCarnival 2 жыл бұрын
@@hjc4289 You don't have to have a very radical notion of capitalism and economics to interpret such wealth, amidst such inequality, as a parasitic, exploitative relationship with an unjust society. Why should the poor family be happy with "quite a good life" at the mercy of the casually callous and hyper privileged rich family? And it's not quite a good life, they are one bad month from homelessness.

Well, there was a foreign language category for many years since after ww2 and it brings movies from around the world to the notice of English speaking audiences. Best Picture was for English language movies only. So when Paradise won both awards at same time, it takes away notice from another deserving English movie... that's why some were upset. Although, there were some that had more xenophobic reactions...

@@Scary__fun Well, yes, "some". Like i said, there's always "some". The bigger issue was the farce that was the whole slander campaign against "JOKER", which many people believed to be a better movie plain and simple. So there was a lot of noise, like there has been for a long time, about how it's not about the better movie and so on which i think is largely justified criticism, but also inconsequential in the end, since if you think that way about the Oscars, why do you care ? What got picked up and amplified by the usual media, was ofc all about the political culture war and essentially nothing about the movie, which only fueled the anger of "some" people. Honestly nothing new in todays climate. Just gotta stay away from stuff like that, nobody comes out of it better than before imo.

Definitely the plan didn't work out, making pizza boxes is not going to make you a multi millionaire and as you said the fathers comments foreshadow that. It's really a class system/family movie like the Snow Piercer and The Host. Bong Joon-ho really doesn't like stratified society. You should also check out another Korean movie called "The Wailing", it s a clever multi genre movie about religion and possession but like Parasite is about a lot of other things.

You think this movie that spends 2 straight hours brutally criticizing the failure of capitalism doesn't have an agenda? Interesting
@My-Name-Isnt-Important
@My-Name-Isnt-Important Жыл бұрын
@@dmckenna You clearly didn't understand the film if you think that is what the film does. You also assume the film has the typical western view of the world, when the film is South Korean. Another thing, how has Capitalism failed? Billions have been pulled out of poverty and starvation, while non-Capitalist nations have seen routine famines, North Korea being a prime example.
@dmckenna

@@My-Name-Isnt-Important Apparently Bong Joon-Ho didn't understand it either (in this or any of his other movies - see also: Snowpiercer, Okja, The Host) As for the second point: Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report 2022 - the world’s richest 1% of people own 46% of all the world’s wealth. Literally 10 seconds on Google, my man. But then maybe all that economic power concentrated in the hands of a small cabal of people whose policies actively harm worker's rights, democracy, press freedoms, and the environment seems gravy to you.

Nah, first of all, that is bs. If you think nobody (which i'd already contest) was gonna make a phone call after someone got stabbed by some random maniac covered in blood (even if just for the police, who certainly would have requested an ambulance) then run to the next phone yourself instead of committing a crime, so someone else will. That ONLY works if you think rich people present suck to begin with and even then i'd tell you to run to the phone. Also, that is not even what the movie shows as the reason. It was the smell, which i also think is laughably forced, but in any case it was pure hatred, not some big brain move to save his daughter.

Sure, i'll take your word for it. I'm sure the times where the Parks are shown to hold their noses have absolutely nothing to do with the outcome (you know, in a very obvious fashion so everybody gets it). I mean, it's only brought up like a good few times at different occasions, which two of them are after the rain leading up to the party and one of them is directly (as in seconds before it) before the stabbing. But even if you were right, that line of thinking makes absolutely no sense and if you think otherwise, i don't know what to tell you other than "please stay away from me, especially if a knife is in the vicinity"
