I believe Taika watched 0 speeches. He said himself “That vision of Hitler that I wrote shares nothing with the real guy other than that mustache, really. He is conjured from the mind of a 10-year-old, so he can only know what a 10-year-old knows. I had no real interest in writing an authentic portrayal, or even when I played him, I had no interest in actually putting in the effort or putting in the research, because I just didn’t think he deserved it.”

One of my favorite scenes in this movie is the “Heil Hitler!” medley. It is played for laughs with everybody greeting each other that way… just “Heil Hitler! Heil Hitler!” over again… right up until the Jewish girl has to greet them the same way. Then each time she utters it is a dagger to the heart.

As a NZer, id recommend watching all his films to be honest, 'Boy' is probably his best work in my opinion... although its very NZish, and ive always liked 'Eagle vs Shark' which was pretty much his first movie, although like Boy its very NZish so might come across a little bland comedy wise if it doesnt translate well. 'Hunt for the Wilderpeople' is great too, although a little more like his more recent stuff... although most of those films might not fit their channels typical genre of film given what they tend to watch. But over all there are no bad, Taika movies (subjective opinion as a country man)... all very much worth a viewing, especially if people have watched Thor:Ragnarok, Jojo and want to see more of his style.

I love how Jojo's imaginary version of Hitler starts out as this fun. goofy, cool guy, but over the course of the movie, the more he is exposed to the realities and ugliness of Nazism, the more imaginary Hitler starts to behave like the real deal. As Jojo's Nazi ideology is challenged he begins to see Hitler for the person he really is; a small, irrational, angry man.

Waititi's depth of planning in this movie shows in how he frames many of the shots. The way Jojo's mother's shoes repeatedly appeared throughout the movie at Jojo's eye level prepared the audience for that moment when he finds her hanging in the square. The first time one reactor saw this movie they thought Taika Waititi had a shoe fetish until that moment, then everything became clear. That also highlights the way Waititi navegated the emotional journey, and how everything could turn on a dime at any minute reflecting the unpredictable nature of life-especially in wartime.

Great reaction to one of my favorite recent movies. One thing that another commenter mentioned, it's hinted at by the looks between them in the German Shepherd scene that Captain K and Finkel are together - which would definitely be a no-no in Nazi Germany, Reinforced by the pink triangles on their costumes at the end. Would have a lot to do with Captain K's disillusionment and sympathy to Jojo's mother's and then saving JoJo.

The Toothbrush mustache Born by Hitler and many others of his generation was a holdover of World War I. A few years earlier, the safety razor had been invented, but facial hair was still quite popular. The introduction of gas and gas masks changed to this as most facial hair would interfere with the seal between the mask and the face leading to people breathing in toxic chemicals. If a man wanted to keep his mustache, it had to be restricted. Hitler had a full mustache before World War I. There's actually a very famous picture of him in the crowd cheering when Germany's declaration of war on France was announced. Charlie Chaplin also have the same mustache and infuriated the Nazis with a movie parodying them. I think this movie in many ways is an homage to that. Taika Waititi's real name is Taika David Cohen. He's half Jewish and half Maori. I'm not sure anyone else could have made this movie.

I've watched this movie a couple of times and watched quite a few reactions, the mom scene towards the end destroys me every time. I haven't paid full attention to it yet, but I think Capt. K actually has the mom's bicycle and was running back to take care of Jojo and just happened to have great timing. His last scene kills me every time too. I came out of the theater cursing Waititi's name for making go on that roller coaster of emotion. He is now one of the few directors that I don't question it, I just go see his movies. This is such a beautiful film. The entire cast is fantastic, amazing cinematography, and it really works so much better than it has any right to. Feel like a lot of people swore it off before giving it a chance based on the premise. It's hilarious but also not afraid to delve into some serious concepts and heartfelt moments. To wrap a coming of age story around a young idealistic kid who is indoctrinated with propaganda and doesn't know any better, and begins to question whether what he's being taught is right or wrong is surprisingly profound for a satire with an imaginary Hitler. The color choices alone are enough to gush about but add in a Michael Giacchino score on top of Taika’s direction and it all comes together to create something extremely special. Hope you folks enjoy it, Cheers! Edit: Thank you Marina for requesting this movie!

One of the incredible things is how good it skirts on the balance of being hilarious and horrific. A true show of what brainwashing the nazi youth did to so many young kids. A small Easter egg, both Sam rockwell and Alfie Allen characters both had pink triangles on there uniforms. Which was a nazi symbol for homosexuality a subtle but great nod to the many others out there who served that way but often where demonised. Whilst in this film they where somewhat celebrated.

Fantastic little film. Went places I didn't think it would and nailed them! The young actors were great and I think Scarlett deserved the best supporting award jmo.

Captain K showed up at Jojo's house with Rosie's bicycle.
@Bunny_Aoife
@Bunny_Aoife 2 жыл бұрын
this is a very persistent rumour but a wrong one, which you can easily verify by googling pictures of the two scenes... Rosie's bike is a woman's bike, with a low frame, and captain K's bike is a man's bike with a high frame... there are other differences as well, but the difference in frames is very obvious and the frame can't be altered, like the basket and such stuff... but they are clearly different bicycles... I do not wanna speculate if he knew or didn't know at that point, but the bike was not Rosie's and assumedly just his bike, no hidden meaning behind it. I'd provide links to pictures, but comments with links tend to get removed... just google them you'll see, it is obviously a different bike

I double checked and you are correct. Rosie's bike had a rainbow banner on the rear wheel, missing on Captain K's.

"Fifty years ago today, The Beatles recorded "Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand," a version of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" translated into German. The German division of EMI had convinced their manager that the record wouldn't be successful in Germany if the English version was released there."

Scarlett and Sam were wonderful and got Oscar nominations, but why not the boys- JoJo and Yorgi were so good- w/out JoJo, there was no film- he deserved some recognition/nominations for his performance- they nearly always overlook kids.

The Beatles recorded a bunch of their early songs in German for release there ... This movie was so out of left field, and just goes to show you - they don't all have to be reboots or sequels.

@@YouMeTheMovies It was pretty accurate movie , they use a town thats has been used in other movies too , Žatec in Czech Republic and interior shots in studio in Prague , other filming location round Prague area . Exterior of the library was a bank building , Petschek Palace , that was used as Gestapo HQ in Prague during WW 2 . The Bourne Identity 2002 , the 'Swiss' bank in Zurich scene , used that same building in Prague .

I recommend the new Downton Abbey movie for anyone looking to get a good, long nap. I fell asleep before the previews were over. Woke up about half way through the movie only to spill an entire large cup of Diet Coke onto my lap. Fell back asleep anyway after about two minutes of sitting there with a wet crotch and watching the people on screen chat in proper 19th century English accents. "Oh, a spot o' tea?" "Why yes, tea would be lovely, mum." Woke back up just as the movie was ending. Felt well rested and refreshed if not also a bit wet

The girl that played Elsa is Thomasin McKenzie. She's from New Zeland like Waititi. She is indeed very beautiful! Fun fact, Waititi is part jewish. He loved the idea of pretending to be Hitler so he could mock him.
